When the Decca Jazz Heritage series was revived toward the end of the LP era, it came with European mono mastering that was far superior to the dreadful "simulated stereo" of the original.

Went to see "Sentimental Value." Quiet film, nicely written, beautifully acted. -
I preordered, but I have to say the discography of this set sent me to my shelves to pull down my somewhat dusty old copy of George T. Simon's _The Big Bands_. There are some really obscure groups on this one! For me, that makes it more interesting, but I fear others might be put off a bit?
-
That would be fine too!

Agree completely! Might be an interesting challenge to decide which Andy Kirk recordings to include, but I'd sure like to hear that selection!
-
Neither one. I'll have to explore those, and I can certainly understand having a bit of difficulty with Lanthimos films. I liked "Poor Things" and "Bugonia," "The Lobster" and "Kinds of Kindness" less, but like him or not, he certainly makes interesting and original movies.

Well, a major reason I'm interested is that I have not heard most of them. It may indeed be that they're not all that impressive, though, given the people who recorded for the label, it sure seems to me like there must be some good stuff there. As for "Lionel Hampton presents," that's just marketing. Hampton was--or maybe imagined he was-- a very big name, and while Mulligan certainly was a giant of the music, if one was trying to appeal to a more general public, it's possible that putting Hampton's name on the record might--I repeat, *might*--sell a few more records. I'd just like to hear them all in Mosaic order!

Del Toro, Scorsese. I've enjoyed the recent run of movies by Yorgos Lanthimos. I also think Chloe Zhao does some good work (well, except for "The Eternals." Didn't think much of that one.)

I saw it last night. It's a fun movie like the first two. -

I'd like to see a "complete label" set of Lionel Hampton's "Who's Who in Jazz" label from the 70s. Mingus did his last bass work for that label, but I seem to remember that the Hampton estate can be "Goodman-like" to deal with.

Yes, their bizarre attitude has always mystified me. If Mosaic were to do a separate set, it sure would be nice to have all the Columbia small group studio material in nice sound and all together with it, but I guess that would make for kind of an odd melange?

"The Greatest Jazz Piano Albums of All Time" & My Favorites
gmonahan replied to HutchFan's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Oh my, so many. The Evans/Lafaro trio things first, always. And Tatum, yes, but I go to the 20th century live things before the others. I have a particular weakness for Pete Johnson's boogie woogie recordings (especially "Dive Bomber"), and I go back to the first Basie/Peterson collaboration ("Satch and Josh") fairly often. I could listen to Bud Powell's Blue Notes forever. And few people can beat Kenny Barron. But I'm leaving out a zillion great piano players/performances I adore. -

I'll also preorder. Interesting not to see any mention of Benny Goodman in the blurb. I know the Goodman estate is notorious about limiting reissues, but V-Discs are all in the public domain, so I'm curious about that lacuna.

I can understand that. As amazing as he is, Farrell's Penguin isn't exactly the most pleasant and peaceful character on the tube!

And disc 3. Some fine work by Irving Fazola on this one. -
I really liked "Penguin." Thought Colin Farrell was amazing in it.
