  1. How does the sound on this version compare to the Collectibles edition? gregmo
  2. I have the old GRP, but not the Heps. I find two Heps by Basie only ("Listen You Shall Hear" and "Do You Wanna Jump") plus a third with a lot of tracks by the Basie band sans Basie with Harry James ("Basie Rhythm") which nevertheless appears to have some of the Basie Deccas too. Are those the three? And is the sound really that much better than the GRP? Likewise, is the Hep "The Jubilee Alternatives" also on the Mosaic Basie/Young? I don't think so, but I'm not near my Mosaics at this moment to check. gregmo
  3. Cool story! But...it doesn't exactly answer my question. Any ideas from anybody out there about this stash of 1980s, 1990s Down Beats I have?! gregmo
  4. I don't know about that. Suitable tracks for your exit? Any suggestions? One of the greatest movie endings ever. gregmo
  5. BUMP--I'm getting ready to move in a few months, and I have a bunch of 3-ring binders holding old Down Beats starting in March 1980 and continuing with rare lacunae all the way to the present. My new space will be a bit smaller than my old one, and these need to go. Any ideas?? I'd be happy to donate them to a library if it wanted to pay the freight. Is Down Beat on-line? Is there any market for these things? Yours in hopeless ignorance, gregmo
  6. I've smiled as I've read all this back and forth about New York jazz clubs. I don't know if others out here in the hinterland share my view, but I'll just say that those of you who are able to frequent *any* of these clubs are damned lucky. gregmo
  7. I have that one. Bert was a classic example of an underrated trombonist. Fine style, great tone. gregmo
  8. Tony Bennett: The Complete Collection, disc four (second singles disc). Only 70 or so to go. This is going to take a while. gregmo
  9. Yeah, dead wrong on Iraq, but right about a lot of other things, and just damned FUN to read. gregmo
  10. Sad news. I was never that fond of the more recent "third-streamy" stuff, but the Terry-Brookmeyer group remains one of my absolute favorites. Such joy and passion in that group. RIP. gregmo
  11. Only 56? You're a baby! (well, to those of us a couple of years older, anyway!) Have a great one! gregmo
  12. My father always gives me some money, so that goes for the Hawkins when it comes out. Looking forward to that one! gregmo
  13. I was thinking the same thing. Nice to have you back! gregmo
  14. It's now January... I thought that might be the case when I got the new Mosaic brochure yesterday without any release date at all. That's too bad for Mosaic. I imagine they were planning a Christmas release. gregmo
  15. I'm with Ubu on this one--really interesting Chet, and Paul Bley is wonderful. gregmo
  16. 74 Jazz boxes that I found. Nothing I couldn't resist, but here's a link. I don't know. There's that Kenny G box. Can I resist that? Can I? Hmmmmm.......yeah, I guess I can. gregmo
  17. Note this, however: PLEASE READ: MISSING CD #3. Other 12 CDs in very good condition. Case of disc 13 with crack. artworks great too. NO slipcase present. Oops--sorry I didn't see that! I'll look more closely before I recommend one of these in future. gregmo
  18. Don't know if anybody is interested in this one, but the old 13-cd box set of Glenn Miller's RCA material is available from an Amazon seller for $69.99. Not too bad a deal: Here gregmo
  19. I think Chuck is right (he usually is). As David's post shows, it appears the future lies in streaming, and I suppose the quality of streams will improve, but what about the "stuff" that comes WITH the music--booklets with cool essays, discographies, and photos? I like having it in my hands, and I fear that era is indeed ending. Books too, I think. gregmo
  20. The Dials, for all the reasons so many have stated. But it's a little like choosing just one flavor of Ben and Jerry's ice cream. Better to have it all! gregmo
  21. I have the Heps and the Webb/Fitzgerald GRP Decca Jazz sets, so this one is going to be a bit of a pull for me. Still, I imagine the sound will be much better (especially than the GRPs), so I may go for it. gregmo
  22. I'm late too (so what else is new), but happy birthday! gregmo
  23. Getting back to Hawk, I'm looking forward to this one. Think I'll try and get my (wonderfully reliable) old father to give it to me for Christmas!! gregmo
  24. Oh yeah. Nice music. Sexy lady. Lovely voice. What's not to like?! gregmo
  25. Does this mean you got the Duets with Lady Gaga and Amy Winehouse for your birthday? Not yet! It's included in the big set. I did go online and watch the video of the duet with Lady Gaga. Thought it was kind of fun, actually!
