  1. You are in for a wonderfull experience when you read that. Baldwin is still an overlooked novelist of true genius. The Library of America editions of his writing are worth purchasing.

O.K., I've put aside my current fixation on Echo and the Bunnymen and listened to Clusone 3: Rara Avis. Very good music on this cd, with Ernst Reijseger being especially creative on the cello. In fact, it is Reijseger that Hans Bennink and Michael Moore are playing off of. He can make the cello do anything and has a beautiful touch and sound. There is a very interesting treatment of Jobim's O Pato, a free-jazz samba. It keeps the samba feel, but the beat floats freely (just confirms what a genius Jobim was). Many quotes from other songs in the music, sort of a "Mocking Bird" ethos to the solos at times. I must admit though, Bennik can get on my nerves with his "humor" at times -- he's just his typical self, throwing in everything, including the kitchen sink. Cd also has a very gracefull feel to it, with one song easily flowing into the next, almost like a suite to describe bird life as felt by the trio. Worth getting if you find a copy somewhere. I still have An Hour With... to go, so, sorry Ian, you'll have to wait awhile until I can get back to you.

These cd reviews, plus the ones I was COMMANDED by Д.Д. to post on: Clusone Trio: Rara Avis & An Hour With.... The pressure is now on for us to deliver the goods.!
  4. Sorry about the passing of your mother. Keeping her and the family in my prayers.
  5. Hemophiliac --- John Zorn/Mike Patton/Ikue Mori Just a bunch of noise. Just because something is a limited edition doesn't mean it's good. Got rid of it after three listens.
  6. I know I'm late ..... but so what! It's a Mug's Game -- Soft Cell Bring on the Dancing Horses -- Echo and the Bunnymen Wake Me up Before You Go-Go -- Wham!

Picked up a used copy of Roscoe Mitchel / Brus Trio: After Fallen Leaves. Which is better than AMG gives it credit for. I don't thing the Brus Trio is as bad a AMG makes out. Granted it doesn't supply too much fireworks, but it's not left for dead either. A very nice remake of Sing is included on the cd, and Mitchel is wonderful as usual. Each time I hear Mitchel it gets deeper in my brain that this guy is a fantastic musician. I'm just trying to convince myself to buy his Solo 3 release.
  8. Thnaks of the input! Think I'll have to start saving up for this one.
  9. What? Spam??!!
  10. I was thinking of getting this myself. How is it?
  11. Decided to replace my Echo & The Bunnymen cds. Think the Bunnymen are the best group from the 1980s. Rhino did a great job on these, sound great, and a lot of great added songs, demo's, live stuff, etc. --- Crocodiles --- Heaven Up Here --- Porcupine --- Ocean Rain --- Echo & the Bunnymen
  12. I'm speechless By all accounts a wonderful man who will be deeply missed.
  13. I'm of two minds about this possibility. Anything by Braxton that I have, I love. However, I just think Braxton is a much better player when he does his own compositions, he just has an added fire to his playing with his own music that is missing with standards. Who am I kidding though? I'd pre-order this set in a minute!
  14. I have the 2cd Albert Ayler Quintet: Slug's Saloon that was put out by Get Back Records. I really enjoy this set, I've always thought that Donald Ayler adds such a unique sound to Aylers music, you can really hear a great combination of a very old style with a new free-style sensibility. But be warned, the sound is not that good. Hopefully, this new release will be an improvement soundwise. For a better live sound, and maybe more of a focused feel to the music, Nuits de La Fondation Maeght might be a good first buy.
  15. You're all insane!!! After reading so much about this set, I finally succumbed to mass hysteria and ordered this set. This, after not buying a Mosaic set in over two years -- thought I was over the Mosaic thing. Man, this is an expensive board to read. Just hope I'll like myself in the morning.
  16. !!!Congratulations!!!
  17. Gosh! I can't imagine a year without seasons! You should have lived in the Imperial Valley in California. It's one of the many reasons I'm glad that I don't live there anymore. I remember my one and only visit to Wisconson in late October. The leaves had turned color about two weeks ago, but they were still colorful. I mean, this life-long Californian's jaw just hit the ground in stupidified wonder . I could not, and still cannot believe, that anything could look the way those trees did. That was my one encounter with being in a place where fall really meant something.
  18. That is just pure BS. This issue about Kenton was very strong way before Burns ever even heard of Kenton. So to blame this on Ken Burns, of all people, is just evading the issue.
  19. One of the reasons I never was a big fan of Stan Kenton were the charges I keep hearing that he was racist. If you look into the history of Kenton's band, there is a decided lack of African-American players in that band. Don't know if this issue ever got into print, but in LA, that's what I keep hearing, and it has stopped me from listening to a lot of Kenton.
  20. That was Jackie McLean using a pseudonym. I know. I didn't! Learn something new everyday!
  21. If you want to spend a little more money, Benny More Y Su Banda Gigante, Grabaciones Completas: 1953 - 1960 put put by Tumbao Cuban Classics, is one of the best box sets I've bought in a long time.
  22. That is nuts ! Amazing -- someone took the bait.
  23. I really like this one. Seems this was a true labor of love and sounds like it was a ball to record. To my mind, an overlooked classic.
