  3. a friend was in your shoes and eventually was given the box and book, so it does happen!
  4. I have never heard this record, though I've seen it around. Might give it a try one day.
  5. There's a thread here dedicated to Nelson's work on Prestige, but I couldn't find one that discussed this album. I've had this on compact disc since it was first reissued in the early 90's. I always go hot and cold on it, but yesterday it really clicked for me. Nelson plays soprano throughout, and his intonation is near-perfect, which in a way isn't surprising given Nelson's meticulousness. His solo on "The Shadow of Your Smile" is really something else. Longer than most Nelson solos, and not openly reliant on his "patterns for jazz" as much as other solos of his from the period. It's really inventive. And his sound is so flute-like in the upper register—I wonder what Steve Lacy or Coltrane thought. (Is Nelson playing an Otto Link? I think so.) What do you think of this record? Both the orchestra side and the quartet side. Does the rhythm section (Steve Kuhn, Ron Carter, Grady Tate) gel?
  6. I'm jealous that you got to see them perform live.
  7. Today
  8. 👍- Recorded during the 'Heidelberger Jazztage' on June 6, 1975. I saw them live during the 'Kunstmarkt Göttingen' at the 'Stadthalle' on June 21, 1975.
  9. The Bottle Tapes - 6 CD set - arriving Saturday.
  10. Joe Farnsworth, The Big Room (Smoke Sessions)
  11. 👍🏼👍🏼 Also born today: Sonny Red, John Ore, Walter Booker, and Ronnie Boykins.
  12. That's my experience, too.
  13. I couldn't find any info on the interwebs. His website lists no upcoming or past performances and I could not locate a Facebook page. Apparently he and Joshua Edelman led a Jazz Workshop session last July in Bilbao, and also gave a 2-piano concert. That's the only post-2019 thing I saw.
  14. Not all CDrs deteriorate. Some do, some don't. It depends on the manufacturer. I have a few CDrs that are 30 years old and still play.
  15. I've never managed to see Schneiderman play live. I don't think I've ever seen him listed in a band playing in the Boston area. I wonder if he still performs in the New York area?
  16. I am torn between a standalone article that goes into greater depth - and which I would need interest from a periodical to be determined - versus incorporating the story in a more simplified way into a Percy France profile, which I already have interest from two different publications, Hot House and the Syncopated Times.
  17. Well, I for one would be interested in reading this - no doubt!
  18. The Ellington V-Discs are on the set below, which may be hard to find and it includes the excellent Deep South Suite. Ellington's band did not participate in any V-Disc recording sessions and that's why there are no Ellington V-Discs on this new Mosaic set. I believe the "In the Sjhade of the Old Apple Tree" is from a World Broadcast session and it's one of my favorite Ellington arrangements. The Jazzology label has a 5 cd series that includes everythning (lots of alternates) that Ellington recorded for World Broadcasting. https://www.amazon.com/V-Disc-Recordings-Duke-Ellington/dp/B00000IIT6/ref=sr_1_4?crid=1EB4B6YVZ1PFX&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.s9LF8A-_jJJ_9CQVxB08-E0rtaquR9wJeN7PTaDShv_9967VSGJx734k-CYfVskMUeYT0TwqDCXS977BvcdDOe7fcXJc430Ovwb2T_9EV-hjpOgZpBylntijTntKvACg.Vc6qKV7PjmUYig-ftlH4d81LT5Dw6iv3c-A8ZNbl8Ss&dib_tag=se&keywords=Duke+ellington+v-disc&qid=1765978205&sprefix=duke+ellington+v-disc%2Caps%2C87&sr=8-4
  19. December 17 Vyacheslav Ganelin - 1944 Saw him with Petras Vysniauskas (ss) and Klaus Kugel (dr) at Jazzwerkstatt Peitz 52 on June 13, 2015
  20. So would anyone be up for an in depth article about how Honky Tonk came to be? Next year is the 70th anniversary and it was the first #1 single by an identifiably "Jazz" group (according to Schaap, the only one to match was Louis with "Hello Dolly"). There's also the fact that Percy France insisted that the song started while he was still in the band. So the history is somewhat muddled - and I have acquired a good bit of info in the last week or so (Schaap interview of Doggett and NAMM interview of Shepherd).
  21. Now Doggett's recollections sound like some conclusive evidence, I'd say. But of course it's not as picturesque as a "chance recording" (the last one tossed off) becoming a million seller. As for Mike's statement about "no guarantee that the order of the matrix numbers represents recordings order" (no doubt that's true, though I'd guess there ARE cases where the matrix number order does represent the recording order, but how do we know?): Doesn't this upset and invalidate the much-loved practice of many collectors (often mentioned here too) to burn their own CDs with the contents of the orignal LPs reorganized in "session recording order"? Because that "session recording order" would then follow the order of numerically ascending matrix numbers (unless proof to the contrary indicating a different recording order exists). But as we have seen there is no guarantee that this order is "correct"?
  22. David Bowie “The Next Day” from the “I Can’t Give Everything Away” box set. Somehow listening to Bowie makes me feel like a teenager again, even though this one was originally bought right before I moved from Texas to Ohio, and also brings back the stress and emotional shift of that transition. Bowie was an amazing artist. 869×1024 98.7 KB
  23. George Garzone and Dave Ballou played last night in Providence with RI Music Hall of Famers Marty Ballou and Marty Richards. Great show attended by maybe 35 people.
  24. Pulled out another Dick Cary to listen to. Great for this early morning stillness. 500×500 71.3 KB Dick Cary’s Tuesday Night Friends “Got Swing?” Arbors Jazz cd
