  1. Past hour
  2. Disc 2 - originally released as Love Dance A desert-island disc for this listener.
  3. The Candoli/Rosolino connection comes from his tenure with Woody Herman, another part of his early career that is often forgotten. Derrick Bang's book is highly recommended.
  4. A busy morning. . . I spent some time shoveling last night’s snowfall as we had a plumbing inspection to be done (as part of a yearly program we have with the plumbing firm we use, who are nice people and knowledgable). All our plumbing is in excellent shape (should be as we have had a number of things corrected in the past few years) but he did find a gas leak right before our meter. So we contacted the gas company and that is taken care of, just a slight leak that required a tightening. Finally we could have lunch and relax. . . Lucinda is napping and I’m spinning Allan Lowe and the Constant Sorrow Orchestra “Louis Armstrong’s America Vol. 2”, disc 2 of the 2 cd set. Lowe is a character but a really interesting musician and this music is very entertaining and. thought-provoking.
  5. Today
  6. I”ll give that one chance as well. I’m not the biggest Arthur Doyle fan but we’ll see. I love the artwork already anyway….
  7. Must have been a great experience Clifford. I’m jealous. After four sides of this trio I needed a small cool down before old years dinner: my favorite MJQ
  8. More reading, less computing. Keep up with cycling and running (although this polar vortex is not helping). Continue drinking less (that kinda happened a couple years ago and has helped, I think?)
  9. Dan, I did't think you'd want to be further associated with a track you called offensive and rated zero stars! Looking forward to a relaxed January BFT full of Gene Harris, Percy France, and the like. Happy New Years, my friend!
  10. Hat Hut would not have recorded that, but the Festival itself has an archive and it could be there. I *believe* that McPhee got his tapes back from Werner. I don't know whether the Lacy material was returned/sold back to Irène. Extras from Clinkers were issued by Roaratorio (duo with Lacy/McPhee) as an EP titled The Rest.
  11. Okay now lets hope they leave all the catologues alone that they don't own and focus on their own magnificent legacy. There must be great unreleased stuff on the vaults by Joe McPhee, Steve Lacy etc.
  12. the 2LP set with PB is very strong. Also, Children of the Forest is incredible. saw Gayle with Graves, Parker, and Rudd, which was pretty interesting. Baraka read poems as well... one of many Vision Festival highlights over the decades. Judson Church sound wasn't the greatest, but the music itself was deep.
  13. That sounds great Clifford. I saw Gayle once at the Bimhuis with Parker and Rashied Ali. I remember that after 20 minutes or so I came in a trance like state. I am now on the fence for buying the 2 LP set with Brotzmann as well. For now I am enjoying this one
  14. wow, I'm shocked to see that Mr. Joy has never been on CD. Strange! Ballads/Virtuosi were supposed to be packaged as a double LP on ESP; obviously the sound and pressings on those individual albums from ECM and IAI are much better than anything we would have gotten from ESP, but it would still be cool to see what Bernard might have chosen for cover art.
  15. Yeah, that is a fabulous set indeed. Glad you picked one up. I wonder what goodies the Black Editions/Graves archive will uncover in the near future; I have heard that another trio set with Brötzmann is in the offing, and am hopeful that the Graves-Brötzmann duo also gets representation. I saw that duo once, at the Berlin Jazztage (or Berlin Jazz Fest, if you prefer), and would enjoy revisiting that music.
  16. He certainly was. Saw him quite a number of times over the years (as well as William & to a lesser extent, Gayle).
  17. maybe I’ve missed it but I can’t remember anyone mentioning this excellent 3LP set coming from the Milford Graves estate. It’s called WEBO. Highly energetic hypnotizing performance with Milford shining as the absolute star but Gayle and Parker are also excellent and I’m not necessarily a big fan of their playing. I really enjoy this set a lot plus it’s done very nicely with the photographs and beautiful artwork. Sound is top notch: cut by Kevin Gray and pressed by RTI
  18. Charles Gayle / William Parker / Milford Graves - WEBO 3 LP set. Stunning. Milford was a beast.
  19. Just ordered ... https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/books/detail/-/art/100-essential-free-jazz-improvisation-recordings-60-0/hnum/12525045?lang=en

  21. Because my BFT is all predicated on tunes people should know, I'd like to point out that I named track 2 correctly and first, but without any acknowledgement.
