  2. 1988 CD reissue with bonus tracks
  3. By the look of it, I think it could be backstage at a festival and I don't think it was recorded. If that's the case, and I'm right about Calhoun, it'd be a matter of triangulating: Jones, Heath, and Calhoun almost definitely imply having Basie, the MJQ and Erroll Garner in the same place -- Joe Benjamin was more of a free agent (he was with Brubeck for some months in 1958, for instance). A candidate would be Newport '59, where Basie, the MJQ, and Garner played, but I haven't had the time to check whether Benjamin was there at all.

  5. I've seen Joshua Redman perform many times by this point. Sometimes the show was great and sometimes not so great. Not every performer can put on their best performance every time. That's why I still buy tickets to their next show. FWIW, I saw Redman during his last tour, when he had vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa in the band. While the shows were enjoyable, I am not a huge fan of vocals, so I didn't like it nearly as much as other shows Redman put on. I think it should have been listed as the "Gabrielle Cavasa Band". But that doesn't mean I won't see him again.
  6. My inner curmudgeon (I searched images for "grumpy old man")
  7. Wow ... what knowledge! I am impressed! Do you have any idea if this was taken at an occasion that was recorded?
  8. Left to right: Joe Benjamin, I think Eddie Calhoun (Erroll Garner's bassist), Heath, and Count Basie's Eddie Jones.
  9. Thanks a lot, Fernando!! So I was right when I figured that that guy wearing the cap looked treacherously like Tony Scott! (Sahib Shihab and Gigi Gryce also were easy to identify) Offhand I just could not think of a big band session that he led. Though I ought to have known and ought to have searched further ... because I do own the "Complete Tony Scott" album. As for others to identify, I might well contact you via MP (our should I put the photos here for everyone to see and identify?). One that comes to mind right away is the pic (about 20 pages into the book) of four bassists jamming together (studio? backstage?). Percy Heath (second from right) is obvious, but the others? Many thanks again!
  10. I have done a bit of that, with photos that seem to come from one session by Tony Scott at Webster Hall, here: https://jazzontherecord.blogspot.com/2018/07/image-and-sound-webster-hall-1956.html If you're interested in any other face in particular, I'd be glad to help. F
  11. A warm morning again. Woke up early and tended to the dog; we’re settling in for a little listening. First off “Unreleased Art Pepper Volume 6 Blues for the Fisherman” disc 2 of 4 On to something different. . . David Bowie “Heathen” from the latest box set.
  12. September 26 Gary Bartz - 1940
  13. Saw Joshua Redman tonight at Yoshi's Oakland. C+. Not impressed at all. There were moments but they were few and far between. I will give him credit for playing Stardust, one those moments....
  14. Inspired me to pull of the shelves and play this
  15. Why did they make that look like a comedy record?
  16. He was great on this:

  20. Week 17 picks https://doorfliesopen.com/2025/09/25/cfl-beat-250/ My picks... Alouettes over Stampeders - The Stamps have not been golden the past few weeks. I was going to pick them, but now that I see that Alexander will start for the Als, I'll pick them at home. So far, Alexander has yet to lose as a starter in his pro career. Lions over Argonauts - BC has been amazing the past two weeks (worthy of #1 in the power rankings), and I don't see an Eastern team playing at night in the Pacific time zone to be able to stop the momentum. Tiger-Cats over Blue Bombers - Collaros will return as the Bombers' starter, but I think the Ticats are the better team this year. Maybe after all these years of success, the Bombers have become just too old. Elks over Roughriders - I feel foolish picking this upset; but the Elks continue to get better, and the Riders are far from perfect. ***** Game Notes https://www.cfl.ca/2025/09/25/game-notes-what-you-need-to-know-ahead-of-week-17/ ***** Week 17 previews https://www.cfl.ca/2025/09/25/4-storylines-to-watch-in-week-17/ https://www.cfl.ca/2025/09/25/3-keys-to-victory-for-calgary-montreal-in-week-17/ https://www.cfl.ca/2025/09/25/vernon-adams-jr-to-start-in-week-17-vs-als/ https://3downnation.com/2025/09/25/official-davis-alexander-to-start-for-montreal-alouettes-against-calgary/ https://3downnation.com/2025/09/25/official-vernon-adams-jr-to-start-for-calgary-stampeders-despite-back-injury/ https://www.cfl.ca/2025/09/25/3-keys-to-victory-for-toronto-bc-in-week-17/ https://www.cfl.ca/2025/09/25/nick-arbuckle-to-start-vs-lions-on-friday/ https://www.tsn.ca/cfl/article/veteran-quarterback-arbuckle-named-starter-for-argonauts-vs-lions/ https://3downnation.com/2025/09/25/qb-nick-arbuckle-returns-for-toronto-argonauts-against-b-c-lions/ ***** Fans can now vote for this year's All-CFL team. https://www.cfl.ca/2025/09/25/vote-now-for-your-all-cfl-team/ ***** Win a trip to the Grey Cup!
