  2. And this performance has yet to be reissued in any form on any label? Unbelievable...
  3. Gotta admit I first heard him on a Lamberts, Hendricks and Ross Lp. Then noticed him on earlier Basie records. Saw him in a club when I moved to LA in '80. A pick up group with Bob Cooper tenor. Good stuff!

  5. Depending on what they do on stage, it may bring about a new definition of "flash mob".

  9. What happened that they named their band that?
  10. 311 is police code in Omaha, Nebraska for "indecent exposure".
  11. 👍 One of my favorite GG's.
  12. R.I.P. I have three CDs on Blue Jack Jazz, one of which he is a part of the American-Dutch All Stars, but he is listed at the top. The CDs you referred to being on Origin are on Organic Music. I never got to see him perform, but he was a delightful interview for Hot House a few years back prior to coming back to the U.S. for a visit and brief tour.
  13. Amazing Tony and Geezer allowed Bill Ward back in the fold to drum too! That alone is worth the price of admission. Original Sabbath line up, including Bill Ward! Bill Ward hasn't been "allowed" to play with them for the subsequent reunion tours for decades. He sounds just as crisp as ever in the War Pigs clip I watched on Youtube; one of my favorite rock drummers.
  14. Finally, I have 12 Connoisseur OBI's; can I send them in and get my BN watch now?
  15. As discussed, there are still shockingly few Carter cycles on record (the first 4 or all 5). I don't find them particularly "difficult" to listen to...except for when I listen as a player... No matter, wonderful music. Hopefully there will be new, young quartets in the 21st Century who will pick them up and fill the gap.
  16. John Garvey, the legendary jazz band conductor at the University of Illinois from the late '50s until the early '90s, played viola in the Walden String Quartet, which was in residence at U of I. When Carter wrote his first quartet in 1950, he sent the score to a gaggle of of string quartets -- I think it might have literally been dozens but I can't recall -- and the Walden was the only one that agreed to play it. The gave the premiere in 1953 and then made the landmark first recording for Columbia Masterworks in 1955. John once told me that it was the first string quartet you couldn't sight read and tell if it was any good. You actually had to learn itbefore deciding whether it was a good (successful) piece or not. Glad you like the JSQ's performances of those Haydn quartets ...
  17. I missed this announcement, but I found out about it from a trumpet player I played with last night. Sad news, but at least he got to play great jazz with the WDR Band, and enjoyed a nice retirement. I played a bunch of gigs with him back in the late 80s. RIP.
  18. Harry "Sweets" Edison / Jerome Richardson / Ray Brown / Larry Bunker. Curcio/I Giganti Del Jazz 53 [Italy 1983] Reissue of Harry "Sweets" Edison: Seven Eleven. 51 West Records & Tapes Q 16076 [US 1979]
  19. “Ellington Jazz Party in Stereo” Columbia CSP stereo LP Well, I picked up a well-priced stereo copy of this album, which I just have in an original pressing in Mono; the stereo LP I have is one of those digitally remastered “CBS Jazz Masterpieces” versions. This one is a 'seventies “Collector’s Series Pressing” releases so not a 'fifties original BUT it sounds really good and is very clean. Sounds better than the Jazz Masterpieces pressing. I LOVE THIS MUSIC!
  20. 480×477 73.2 KB “Blows Against the Empire” RCA/Legacy cd I wish Mobile Fidelity would do an SACD of this. . . none of the cd versions I have heard really match the sound and feel of the OG LP I have, which is pretty noisey I’m afraid. Still remember my fascination with this music in the 'Seventies.
  21. Yes! This one is a prime example:
  22. HOLD THAT FUCKER UP!!!
  23. Here he is, popping up out of someplace else wearing a Harmon mask: This was my first exposure to Sweets and I had a hard time reconciling this guy with somebody who supposedly played in the 30s Basie band. Time took care of that, of course, but it goes to show you to pay attention to everybody who's on a record, because by god, there WILL be a test later!
