  2. @Niko This gets to me, "... my late dad had a lifelong struggle with the obscure language that's still commonly used in the humanities in Germany... I have many childhood memories of him complaining about the way people said things in faculty meetings etc... and, somehow, that preference for a simple and clear style in scientific writing has stayed with me... to the point where my tolerance for convoluted sentences and fancy words is pretty low... certainly far too low to appreciate Heidegger... " Niko, this story really upsets me too. I don't know where to start. I have had my fair share of pompous asshole professors acting like they know everything, and we students are a bunch of dolts and ninnys. No matter how hard I tried, I was never excepted into exclusive clubs that spoke fluent German (mine was still broken (I had to think) and could never roll my r's). I don't want to think Heidegger was one of them, but I am not German and even after taking four years of German plus two graduate years of German research, would want to believe Heidegger would not make fun of anybody because they're not fluent enough to speak nor write in his way, but now I think he does. If so, then Heidegger is a pompous asshole too and that pompous-ass tradition carried on and look how it affected your father is a complete shame. The idea he wrecked lives like that, your dad saying basically Heidegger set the bar, wow. Pretentious much! Wow. This account just paints a new picture of Heidegger for me. I have some reevaluating to do...

  6. Wow Niko, thank you for sharing these amazing stories. How rare you get a glimpse into Heideggers's "real" classroom, which sounds like you dig him or you don't. This is rare and insightful. Wow!
  7. Plus The Way Ahead of course 😍
  8. Read it (the Oxford edition, if I recall, it was reprinted as a Harper Torch paperback, I don't have it handy, and he assisted in some of the translations) and it was a huge assist. Very much admire his contribution to the Hegelian canon.
  9. Yes that sounds like what I am hearing too thanks Kevin. Now playing a collaboration between these two masters:
  10. Sneaking a few listens in this cool morning before I have to go back to the dealership with my car. Starting off with the expanded Charles Mingus “The Carnegie Hall Concert–Deluxe Edition,” Rhino 2 cd set, disc 1–the newly released first part of the concert. The sound is so good! A reissue truly done right!
  11. Very sad to hear this. I have all of her albums and wondered why zhere was nothing New. R.I.P

  13. I don't watch the Price is Right so I'm not sure I can make comparisons. On Project Runway there are definitely some pretty models, and some that are not that pretty imo, but that's not what we are focused on in the series. It's hosted by Heidi Klum if that makes a difference. She is pretty.
  14. Yes! That's the one!
  15. I found it all pretty confusing, but I selected a Motorola Moto G Power 5G. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CT6BQV81
  16. Indeed. Even in a very, VERY strong run, this one stands out for me The older I get, the more I realize just how much of a TOTAL badass Coleman Hawkins was, and not just about music. Like, how much of a badass about life he had to be to get to be that much of a badass in music. Not always true for everybody, and more true for Hawk than for many!
  17. On this Night, yeah! Historically and great music, love Fire Music and Four for Trane, but I like the Shepp Impulse!'s that fly under the radar, like For Losers, Live in San Francisco, Attica Blues, and Mama Too Tight. The Savoy material with Bill Dixon should be made more readily available (have the Atlantic/Savoy issue of Shepp/Dixon 7tette/Cont 5, but not the quartet issue , which is some gray-area issue).
  18. Glad I got to see her in person at the Jazz Standard before the back injury that laid her low.
  19. Mine as well, at least from his first period. Also On This Night. That one maybe gets underappreciated. Most of them have actually held up really well though. However...Fire Music and Four For Trane might be of more historical importance than Shepp importance once his pre-Impulse work gets familiar?
  20. RIP. The loft material from the '70's is gold.
  21. Models ain't always purty, and gambling is no longer for me. But you know what that Price Is Right TV show has models and they ALWAYS be purty. Even Devin and James which imo takes some doin. Not so the contestants though. That quality has deteriorated greatly. Them people ain't kookin healthy too often. But Drew Carey looks great still! Not purty, but healthy, which I suppose is the purtiest of all purtys!
  22. Nancy King, the great jazz scat singer passed away today here in Portland. She was 85 years old. She recorded with Ray Brown in the late '90s, and also with Glenn Moore of Oregon. She will be missed...
