  1. I was just too young for 66. It's the heartbreak of Mexico 70 that's my first WC memory. I can still see Muller's winner...scarred for life.
  2. A very, very, very, very long time from where I'm sitting
  3. Well played Belgium, scintillating on the break and great defence and goalkeeping. Hazard won the battle of No.10s, Neymar's just a cheat. De Bruyne and Lukaku too good. I'm beginning to come round to Brad's way of thinking WC to Europe
  4. You probably know this but just in case, here's a very good Kaucic https://www.discogs.com/Barry-Guy-Maya-Homburger-Zlatko-Kau%C4%8Di%C4%8D-Without-Borders/release/10237884 Thanks for highlighting the boxset
  5. Well, Ok, if you're including them it would be pretty useful. Still struggling to come up with a striker though Although the midfield would be so good the team wouldn't need one, maybe Nice spot, Brad. And then, lose to their northern neighbours in the final ...
  6. I wasn't but unless you're including those naturalised to other countries who would be in the team?
  7. Bale, absolutely. Ramsay maybe but I'm not sure who else would get into the current England team from any of the other sides? Very unlikely, it's not in the PL's interest as no team from outside England would get in and the Scottish League isn't going to subsume itself and see Celtic struggle in the Championship and no longer have any chance of European football. But we do manage to come together for the Olympics so there is precedent It would be good but not that good. Who would be the main striker? Still stuck with Mandzukic or Dzeko, both 32 years old. Croatia's attack and midfield with a few Serbs to strengthen midfield and defence. Can't think of too many players from other nations although I'm sure I'm missing someone
  8. Listening to it now, prompted by these posts. First track "Back To The Tropics" seeming particularly apt as London swelters in our heatwave
  9. Hope he's bilingual or else his every decision will be dissected on this board
  10. You mean we had an opportunity to get rid of the Isle of Man and didn't take it? Something else I can blame The Thatch for now
  11. that's been sitting in my Discogs cart for a while now. Big fan of Fuchs
  12. You do know Airto, right? Also, Calo Scott's presence is a always a good indicator. Metzke's played with Paul Motian and on some of Barbieri's Impulse dates which isn't too shabby. david Lee's on Zawinul's self-titled solo album, I think I need to get a copy of "Two Is One" as I only know it from YouTube. Looks like a cheap vinyl reissue is about at the moment which might be the way forward given the cost of other editions. I'm going to listen to those YouTubes right now with Steve Coleman in mind. I like that idea
  13. and engaged in, all too enthusiastically for many of us, by an elected government trying to prop itself up. Thanks for the interesting insight about 19c immigration, Brad. Immigration into South America from Europe is little mentioned here generally, I think. One byproduct I particularly like is the Welsh influence in Argentina, especially Patagonia, being the reason why the Argentinians play rugby
  14. God help us, given the number of other countries we've either fought or mistreated over the centuries. Don't even mention the lead up to the Boston Tea Party please
  15. David Murray - Last Of The Hipman [Red Records] thanks for the reminder JohnS
  16. what i love about that article is the way Maradona, of all people, is presented as an advocate for the fair application of the rules in a WC. A marvellous use of irony by the article's author. Elephants and English football fans... 7 for me with one absolute Doh! when the answer was revealed but what else is national loyalty meant to do in a football competition?
  17. So it's now OK to headbutt your opponent in the chest and only accidentally move your head up from that chest to happen upon their chin? Funny as most people's chins overhang their chest I find and any upward movement from the chest will find their face I've stated elsewhere on this thread a number of times that England are a limited side and haven't produced chances or goals from open play. It will be their downfall as soon as they face a more creative team. I think the sad aspect of yesterday's game is that Colombia could have been that opponent if they'd concentrated on playing England rather than kicking them.
  18. too true, he should have sent off the Colombian for the headbutt on Henderson. He then allowed Colombian players to spend 4 minutes (!) protesting against his penalty decision before allowing the penalty to be taken. Other than that I thought he ref'd in a manner that responded well to the Colombian tactic of physical intimidation, once again, I'd cite the completely unnecessary barge on Sterling by a member of the coaching staff as he lift the pitch at half-time as indicative that this was a predetermined tactic sanctioned by the coach and his staff. Yes, the ref missed a couple of retaliations but these were a direct result of intimidation so the fact they were missed was poetic justice of some sort I also think the issue of the ref not speaking Spanish is a red herring. How many of the games up to now have been ref'd by someone bilingual in the languages of the competitors do you think? Indeed if he had spoken Spanish he may have een able to explain to the Colombians that their intimidatory tactics were not acceptable. Conversely if he understood Spanish we may have seen a couple more Colombian cardsfor what was being said to him in their petulant displays of protest - maybe it was better for them he didn't fully understand
  19. Hope so. My recent purchase of it is in the post
  20. How do you know the ref wasn't a Spanish speaker, just sayin' Also, the ref didn't ask the Colombians to take the overly-physical approach that they chose. that card ratio fairly reflects the level of foul play chosen by each side, I'd say This may be true about England's reliance on Kane but using his current goal tally as an indicator isn't really an accurate analysis as four of his six have been penalties which may well have been scored by another taker in his absence. Also, until England play their preferred XI sans Kane we'll not know whether Rashford or Vardy are sufficient replacements. They may well be but I'm happy not to find out just yet England are limited. Any team that shuts down the wide supply and avoids giving away free kicks close to the box will seriously reduce the threat. England's big failing so far isn't over reliance on Kane it's having only created a handful of chances, and one goal, from open play. Having said that Sweden's approach may well suit us. We're in the QF, other better teams aren't, and no-one can take that way
