  1. Regret never getting that box (may go for the dl one day). Only seen Parker/Drake twice but one was with Brotzmann, the other Gjerstad so I'm not complaining Enjoy the Order To Survive shows
  2. I've been really enjoying the LA soul-jazz of this album since picking it up a few weeks ago on a whim there's some online info and discography that shows five albums. I'm intrigued by the fact that the one above is definitely a vibes/flute front line but by the time you get to their last one, below, no vibes, no flute and no readily available personnel credits. First album, the top one, has William Henderson on bass, Jim Keltner (!) drums and Jack Fulks, who evidently played with Chico Hamilton, on as/fl can anyone shed any light on the personnel changes through their recordings? Most information suggests that they were the vibes player Joe DeAguero's band at the offset so what happened to DeAguero? Only O-board reference is on a Magnificent Goldberg BFT from 2014 so maybe that piqued interest
  3. That gives me some hope. I had avoided it until now as Old and New Dreams are a favourite and couldn't see how Redman Jr. was going to pull this off. He's most definitely not his father
  4. Afro Blues Quintet Plus 1 - Introducing [Mira/CBS]
  5. I've been thinking about getting that. Any good or is there a reason that a one-off recording by a bunch of students was so obscure? edit to add: just found it on YT, still interested in your views CT if you're so inclined
  6. two heartfelt pieces from the ever-readable Richard Williams https://thebluemoment.com/2018/08/17/forever-aretha/comment-page-1/#comment-16634 https://www.theguardian.com/music/2018/aug/16/aretha-franklin-obituary
  7. in the sleeve note John Lewis writes that "never before or since has the MJQ played better, whether on stage or in the recording studio". Some claim but guess he's as good as judge as most... It's a great listen
  8. I couldn't agree more A real live album. A favourite
  9. Thanks to Soulpope for posting from this album elsewhere and alerting me to its existence. And, thanks Aretha
  10. Such a great artist. This makes me very sad. Here's hoping her suffering wasn't too great. RIP
  11. John Coltrane - Kulu Se Mama [Impulse, France]
  12. And, keeping it in the family Steve McCraven Quartet - Intertwining Spirits [Free Lance]

  15. All about the drummers today Chico Hamilton Quintet - s/t [Vogue UK] Chico Hamilton - Man From Two Worlds [Impulse] Greg Fox - The Gradual Progression [Rvng Intl.] Chad Taylor - Myths and Morals [eyes&ears Records]
  16. It is hard to believe that someone whose career has been largely based on collaboration, much of it with European colleagues, can take that stance but then the choice of my compatriots, if only by a slim margin, baffles and annoys me on a daily basis.
  17. Paul Horn - In Kashmir, Cosmic Consciousness [Liberty]
  18. I've heard that tone a lot in live settings
  19. And if you don't want to start at the beginning, which as everyone's earlier suggestions attest is possibly the best place, don't overlook the ECM catalogue for the fabulous trio recordings with Paul Bley and Barre Phillips, 'Sankt Gerold Variations' and 'Time Will Tell'. Both are a very good place to hear EP's playing in what I like to think of somewhat fancifully as a Giuffre-esque lineage. Also, overlooked are the Electro-Acoustic Ensemble albums and more recently some truly astounding releases on his own Psi label - 'Trance Map' and 'As The Wind' are highlights for me It's such a huge and varied discography there's entry points everywhere. seeing either the Schlippenbach Trio or the Parker/Guy/Lytto trio live is a musical game changer
