  1. BKO Quintet - Bamako Today listening to this makes me think how I should could up with contemporary music out of Mali a lot more than I do. Just discovered they have a new album too
  2. In contrast, I really enjoy EP's playing on this because it isn't his "energy" style (which I adore). Seeing him a few times in last couple of years I would hazard a suggestion that there's a mature/late style apparent in his playing where there's a slower, considered approach to his soloing. I hear his playing on Uncharted Territories as coming from an almost Giuffre-esque lineage. Obviously with an improvisor of such unique facility his choice of solo approach reflects often who he's playing with/responding to.
  3. Much better than "quite good" for me. I agree about the amount of music but the changes of line ups from within the quartet provides a variety. Ches Smith is the voice that really stands out for me, the others are on top of their game (EP just seems to get better and better) but it was a great idea to add him and Taborn to the originally slated duo. The music is really first class throughout. Well worth spending time with but maybe not approaching all in one sitting. One of my new releases of the year
  4. That's a list of wants that I've had for a while. Unfortunately it appears many Lacy/Togashi discs are on the pricey side. The post has prompted me to finally buy 'Spiritual Moments' so thanks for posting
  5. Yeah, that's a good one. Similarly not played here for a while
  6. Bridgewater Brothers - Lightning and Thunder [Denon] the power of the BFT
  7. John Gordon - Erotica Suite [Strata East/Everland Jazz reissue]
  8. There's been a decided upsurge in interest in Eastman's music over here in the last couple of years. Programmed at the Barbican and Cafe Oto that I'm aware of. I've liked what little I've listened to from 'Unjust Malaise'. I need to listen to more. Looking at the Discogs entry again I see that he provided the vocals for Maxwell-Davies and Fires Of London's 'Eight Songs For A Mad King', now that I didn't realise. Great recording from 1973
  9. John Coltrane - Ascension [HMV UK, mono] Replacement for my slightly tired Jasmine pressing I can still remember hearing this for the first time in the first years of my Jazz listening and being scared witless Needless to say a different reaction today although how the neighbours are reacting could be similar Yes. on EMI India. It's on spotify if you want to sample. I think it's a great album, less Indo-Jazz fusion, a la Mayer etc, than Indian musicians (some of whom are Jazz players) playing Jazz, to my ears at least
  10. Often wondered about that one, such an interesting line up. I like the sound of those hints
  11. Not too sure if this thread will have legs or not but inspired by my purchase of this and the plethora of vinyl reissues hitting the shops. My inclination is to avoid non-authorised reissues but it seems difficult to ascertain the bona fides of so many. I thought we might share knowledge of so many reissue labels about at the moment. on Outernational, claiming a master tapes reissue. Anyone know anything about Outernational? Other labels I've recently wondered about are Pure Pleasure and Everland Jazz
  12. Shankar Jaikishan - Raga Jazz Style [Outernational reissue] Ideal listening to accompany the cricket. Nicely produced reissue. I don't how official it is, Outernational's website claims it's from master tapes but that's easy enough to state. They've just reissued a Nimbus West which looks very interesting
  13. Today's Brackeen serving Paul Motian Trio - Le Voyage {ECM} Paul Motian Trio - Dance [ECM]
  14. Didn't know about that band with Rava. Two favourite trumpeters together would've been something else
  15. Ahmed Abdullah - Abdullah Live At Ali's Alley [Cadence]
  16. Those are the ones I have and really rate very highly. Thanks for the insights on the others
  17. And The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. We could go on... a fine label Ahmed Abdullah Quartet - Liquid Magic [Silkheart] more Brackeen, more Malachi Favors
  18. Gonzalez own Silkhearts aren't too shabby either
