I believe he also had a place, at least a phone number, in Seattle.

He was living, and teaching, in Cathlamet, Washington. In the late '70s or early '80s he toured with Earl Hines. I remember them appearing in Chicago.

Again, I bought it cheaply as a Barnes and Noble close out. A fine collection.

I believe these are the work of Rudy.

Somehow you missed my favorite - their 2nd record called simply The Band. I fell in love with it as a new vinyl release, and play the cd at least once a year.

Thanks for the info. We bought the Nokia at Wal-Mart for fifty (20 free minutes) and a card of 150 minutes for another forty. This will cover our road trip, and (if we want) can return the phone for a refund before 30 days is up. Sorry to sound so stupid in these matters, and a hundred thanks.

I haven't heard it yet, so I don't know. My understand is it's an "audience tape". Ben was looking for a semi-pro tape from the board. Don DeMichael, then editor of DB, always regretted they didn't roll tape. My most vivid memory of that set was George Wein trying to get the band to stop - they played beyond the alloted time. The photo of Shepp on the cover of the Delmark New York Contemporary Five lp was taken by Bill Abernathy at that performance.

We only want the service for the 3 weeks of our vacation.

Thanks to all for the orders (a few days left) and some info for Okka fans. I ran out of the Brotzmann 3 disc set, re-ordered from them and Bruno called to tell me the set is out of print. I suggest anyone interested search for it and get it now. Bruno said he still had 300 covers and might someday repress it "if he could".

Couple of things. Memory fades, but I'm not sure the "2 takes" of "Crab" are really different. Next - the new Uptown Eager cd starts with a set at the Hi-Hat with about 20 minutes of fine performances with Allen and the Twardzik trio.

About 3 years ago, Ben Young (then employed by Universal) called to ask about the possibility of Coltrane tapes from the Down Beat fest of 1965 (quartet + Archie). I had attended the performance, and assured him no tapes exist. The Russell "5 Spot" disc had just been reissued and I asked him about the "KC" date. He said they decided to issue the "5 Spot" disc because of name recognition. He also said there was a bunch of unissued material (no mention of extra tunes or alternates) from the "KC" dates. Lest anyone is fooled, all the aforementioned material is from studio sessions in NYC.

After all that, I'm getting dizzy.

Now I see they are together a bit on the Shank set. I'm bummed to see "Ivory Hunters" is missing from the BB box.

Yup, it's Mars material. Mars material was later reissued by Discovery on 2 lps and eventually on a single cd.

Just to clear some confusion here - The master takes from 1936-51 would take at least 7 cds with 25/26 tracks per disc.

Believe me, the wrong guys lost. This was an effort by the big labels to protect "music stores" from mass merchandisers who could sell music for "nothing" to attract shoppers. We lose. Stores like Tower and "mom and pops" are defeated. Big, really big business wins again.
