  2. I see the moderator replaced a better and more thorough message. Bummer. I came here to praise the original message.
  3. He endured and triumphed beyond any expectations. The greatest human in my experience.
  4. Forum was the $2 budget series for Roulette.
  5. Who do you think should be paid? OTOH, I hate to see "someone" make all the bucks.
  6. A lovely date and fantastic cover shot.
  7. Virgil Pumphrey.
  8. Dandy. Thanks. "EI: I believe it. I bet Dizzy didn’t pay as well as Nancy Wilson. MR: No. Nobody paid like that. Most of those guys are selfish guys. Lee Morgan paid me more money than Dizzy Gillespie, and that’s a shame. Them guys are cheap. Bags, all of them were cheap. Sonny Rollins was generous. Stanley Turrentine: cheap! Most of those guys paid us as little as they could. (Laughs) I worked with guys with lesser names and make better money than I do with the guys with the names. It’s selfish."
  9. that don't mean spit.
  10. Bought that one at Campus Record Shop in Iowa City. Best guess is Fall, 1962.

  12. I just had chills.
  13. 'twould seem self recommending.
  14. JR Monterose told me Perry Como was his favorite singer on a number of occasions. He liked his "swing".
  15. No one has mentioned my favorite, the Toscanini recording with the NYPSO in a recording from 1936. In my opinion, and a few others, the first 4 minutes of the first movement as originally approved by Toscanini are preferable to the faster substitution made for later RCA pressings and RCA has continued with the substitution for ever. Pearl issued a nice set of Victor's Toscanini / NYPSO recordings a few years ago with the original side and regrettably I can't locate my copy at the moment. Bev must be going nuts searching for the Pearl issue.
  16. Something like ship fa.
  17. I can only mention those I have engaged: Terry Martin, John Litweiler, Larry Kart, Jim Sangrey, Chris Sheridan, Bob Porter, Michael Cuscuna, Robert Palmer, Max Harrison, Neil Tesser John Corbett, some of the artists and some short supplimentary notes by myself. Many of these folks are friends and have done fine work for my recordings. Dan Morgenstern, another old friend, has agreed to do an essay for our Ira Sullivan issue but personal obligations might prevent this. Otherwise I do enjoy Gitler's silly stuff and first person bop memories.
  18. Glad you could experience it. Wadada is a fascinating musician, not to be taken lightly. Thankfully I can count him as a friend.
  19. Why pay any attention to these folks? I can't refuse Stanley's calls but otherwise.
  20. Link Wray Fay Wray Ray Downes
  21. One year at the Chicago festival he held his band in the wings and stared at the sky, ignoring the announcer, stage director, etc. One of his band members said "the Master is waiting for the stars to align". The stage manage said "tell the Master if he doesn't hit the stage in 30 seconds he doesn't get paid". Movement abounded.
