  1. I have some respect for all participants, have the cd and heard them at the Chicago fest last year. From my point of view, it doesn't all add up to something "special".
  2. Many thanks to Cactus Bob for sparing the shots of his valves.
  3. If you are interested in vinyl, in the US it was issued on Epic:
  4. Never heard the Goldberg Variations?
  5. Nice story. Thanks Georgia.
  6. Jim, the google link worked. After all that, what a bummer. No insights of any kind in a half dozen short paragraphs. There is an interesting story buried in history.
  7. Well, I am outside their firewall so I can't read it. I hope they talked to some AACM folk who came up thru the Chicago school system with the EWF folks.
  8. Taking my copy on a Mediterranean cruise in November - no computer to distract me.
  9. It is his only recording.
  10. Since the Mosaic sets are pressed by the company licensing the material to them, Mosaic is undoubtedly at the mercy of the stock carried at the pressing plants. It is easier for independent labels to control stuff like that.
  11. Maybe, but I think the face is too full.
  12. "Look at me, ....."
  13. I agree with this post and should mention he made a different version of his "Avant Garde" story during the panel I attended. He framed it as "with my professional military experience, I recall the "avant garde" were the folks we sent to be sacrificed in the battle for the winning troops to follow". At this point I "exploded" and went on about real folks dead for their art. At the end of my "rant" he looked down the table at me and said "You talkin' to me? I'm sorry, I believe my hearing aid is malfunctioning". I can only think of him as a dickhead.
  14. I guess we should all be thankful you are across the sea.
  15. They also have a sale on Black Saint/Soul Note boxes. Sadly I don't need any of these.
  16. Saw Brotzmann a month or two ago (solo/duo with Joe McPhee in Buffalo) and he sounded wonderful - a rhapsodic tenor to the end.
  17. I can't deny that Jochum was unique in Bruckner, but what bothers me about his Bruckner is his "stop and go" treatment, his excessive rubato. Some (many?) people seem to like it, but I find it annoying. As to the 4th, my favourite version is Karl Böhm's interpretation with the Vienna Philharmonic (Decca). And the Bohm seems square and lifeless to me. I bought the 2 lp version when it was first issued and felt the same then.
  18. I think your mention of "modern orchestras" could be the problem.
  19. I just had chills and might have trouble sleeping tonight.
  20. I would be interested in a list of her husbands.
  21. An old friend said the problem Bruckner had with most folks was the complete lack of sex in his music. I always thought the strength of his music was his Christian zeal (not that I am advocating that) and the way inside for some might be thinking of the symphonies as orchestrations of giant organ solos. I love lots of Bruckner, but it takes time to meld into his world. Unfortunately for Bev, historical conductors provide the best entry points. If you are looking for a "way in" get the DG cd of Bruckner 4 conducted by Jochum. If that doesn't convince you, smoke some weed and play it again. :-)
  22. One fine lady is gone.
  23. Innagoddamnvw.
  24. I had a nasty exchange with him on a panel in Dayton, Ohio. It was a festival of some sort and later that day I met David Murray on a staircase and he said "I hear you had a tussle with my man Albert!" then he smiled and slapped me on the back. He did lots of work admired by others and I thought his passing was important.
