  1. He also recorded with Hod O'Brien and Leon Thomas. Figure that connection out.
  2. Allen, which edition of the Roost material are you listening to? IIRC, editions before the Blue Note "complete" box run at the wrong speed. This can warp one's perspective.
  3. Went in this morning for a checkup and all is fine. I was not able to use the multifocals because one eye has a badly scarred cornea thanks to an attack of shingles. I will need reading glasses. Am taking all the drops, drops, drops, etc.
  4. The Mosaic only used mono tapes for the pieces on Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus. The original stereo masters were missing. The balance of the set is stereo.
  5. Not really worth the effort or dollars. You have the meat.
  6. Hope you don't think I am your mom.
  7. No friggin' idea. Could have been chainsaw.
  8. Had cataract surgery on my left eye this morning. So far, so good. The idea of someone cutting my eye open with me conscious was daunting but wound up being really interesting. We will see what the doctor says in the morning.
  9. So did Fats Navarro and a bunch of folks from his generation.
  10. Not sure about the Mosaic/Candid comparison - the Candids have 26 selections.
  11. AND the Contemporary date was produced by Nat Hentoff but not included!
  12. Yup.
  13. Spoke with Joseph briefly this afternoon. He sounds a little weak, but better than I expected.
  14. U shud sip yo hand in yo pants and dreem.
  15. He's a rhythm guitar player.
  16. Jeff - wish I'd known you'd be in Chicago. I'd have made the trip to meet you in person. I might have bought lunch.
  17. Back then the standard mastering tape was the U-Matic video tape. Average length of them was somewhere in the upper 70s range. Different manufacturers had slightly different lengths. In addition, the process required 2 minutes of tape before the signal could start. For this reason general practice in the industry was a limit of 75 minutes of content.
  18. Also included in the 2nd Chronological Classics disc (1939-41).
  19. Blue Note never released the Lewis disc.
  20. I am sure you will remind us in a couple of months.
