John Litweiler came to Madison to write a piece about Cecil in Madison and it was published in Down Beat. IIRC he attended some ensemble rehearsals and a concert. It would be worth digging out. When Cecil left for Oberlin, he recommended Bill Dixon as his replacement. When Dixon left, he recommended Jimmy Cheatham. I have stories to tell about all of 'em...............sometime when I have the time. Enough to say I ultimately have negative things to say about Bill and Jimmy, so maybe I won't share.

The Impulse box has proven to be incomplete by more recent "discoveries" but the Vanguard box IS complete, so that is the direction I would go unless.....................you don't think you will spring for the individual discs with the "extras". Pardon the clumsy sentence. -_-

I lived in Madison at the time and had some contact with him during his tenure. IIRC he flunked all the students not attending a Miles Davis concert that year - not quite the entire class.

Yes, #17 has CSC on 12 tracks. I see Worlds still has the Classics 1933-34 listed. He's on all 23 tracks of this disc. I should add a couple of points. There are vocals on the majority of tracks on the 33/34 disc. This is also relatively late in the game for tuba in rhythm sections. Most recordings by this time have string bass but Cyrus is still swingin' the band. Check him out on "Jimmy Had A Nickel".

Just checked out the contents of #37 and not much Cyrus on that one. I'll check out some others and be back shortly.

Just to provide a little "context" for Mr. Goldstein's comments I wish to mention he was "Executive Director" at Antilles (about 25 years ago) when they recorded Ornette, Braxton and Air.

I'm not Brownie but I don't think it was reissued on cd. IIRC the 2 lp set had 3 sides of Johnson and one side by the Lloyd and Cecil Scott bands with Dickie Wells,etc. The Charlie Johnson material was issued on cd. I have it on Hot 'N Sweet FDC-5110.

Sorry I can't be more help - I just really discovered him working my way thru the Clarence Williams Classics discs. He made tons of sides with Williams from 1926 through April of 1937. I'm still digesting this stuff and can't narrow the area yet.

Chuck, do you know if anything is missing on the five CDs, as compared to the Mosaic? Same question for Mingus (where I think nothing is missing, but don't know for sure)! IIRC the Taylors miss one take of Air. Not sure about the Mingus.

If all goes as planned, the 2nd Dameronia on Uptown "Look Stop and Listen" will be out later this year.
