  1. If you are buying, the odds get real good.
  2. Marshlands is a Storyville "best of" disc. Better off buying one of the real Storyvilles.
  3. IIRC, Hastings is about 25 miles SE of Grand Rapids.
  4. Kinda interesting how the Pistons "bookend" Phil's career.
  5. Don't have a clue about the spelling, but it looks like time for fondue, fawn due, phaundo, Phan Du. I think on of these is a neighbor.
  6. All this stuff about Ray has me digging up memories (both good and not so good) about working with Ray at the Chicago Jazz Festival. I "forced" Mr Charles (with money) to perform with a recreation of his old band with Fathead, Hank, Marcus, etc. It was both wonderful and a bummer at the same time. If I have time to sort this stuff out (in my scrambled head), I will post some details. I am trying to sort out the complete personnel. I think we used Pretty Purdie on drums and unfortunately, Phil Upchurch on bass! I wanted to include Don Wilkerson in the band, but Fathead and Hank said "there will be nothing for him to play". My favorite memory is Hank kissing me after the gig and him saying "People been trying to do this for years, and you finally did it". I'm not certain Ray felt the same way. I don't think that sort of thing happened again.
  7. John has done it! Circle on the front, full shit on the back. Way to go. Bill, get to work.
  8. Dan, if you have a chance. if your local store has a sale, if someone offers you one, if you trip on it, get a friggin' clue. We will all profit.
  9. We'll probably check out the Chicago fest. If not, I'll either recreate something in my head and failing that play some of my tapes from the days I was involved.

    Steve Lacy

Not as an interpreter of Thelonious Monk.

No Oliver Nelson charts performed at Town Hall, Philharmonic Hall or the Chicago reunion. Thank God for that. I do have a tape of the reunion.
  12. Fred was in the Roscoe Mitchell Quartet circa 1962-64. Other members were Malachi Favors and Alvin Fielder.
  13. Floyd LeFlore, Fred Berry and the (relatively) famous Baikida Carroll.

I really hated it when the Cubs traded you.
  15. Having been there "a thousand times" and loving the place, I really appreciated the shot of the Blackstone Hotel under construction. Thanks Chris - many more hours on the internet ahead.
  16. Joe, we've all had enough of your crap and will be delighted if you restrict you posting. If you hadn't noticed, Impossible is a complete idiot without any sense at all.

Joe, I used to hawk your lps. Forget restraint, jump in and become an asshole like me. B)
  18. 300 mg of Wellbutrin XL a day. It makes you attack Gene Harris fanatics, otherwise known as the One Sound.
  19. Nah, that's from the year that I quit smoking.... SHIT! I've lost 57 pounds in the last year and am now taking DRUGS my doctor gave me to stop smoking.
  20. I can tell you about my reactions at the time (and my friends). We thought Wayne was a MOTHER and were disappointed by the first couple of BN records under his name. We felt he'd "lost focus". I'm sure Vee Jay sold a (relative) bunch of this lp 'cause I saw it much more often (in private collections) than other Vee Jay jazz sides.
  21. Jim, it looks like you put on a couple of pounds this past year.
  22. I think you misread the liners. I don't think there are any commercial recordings of Lennie from the '70s. C Minor Complex was issued on the original lp and subsequent reissues except the Rhino cd.
  23. Not a goof - 2 different pieces. Rhino did include C Minor Complex in a piano anthology issued at the time.
  24. I just received a new transfer yesterday. I have to live with it a few days to decide if I approve. No date yet.
