  1. IMO, Elf always sounds to me like he's trying too hard to play hip and often comes off a little too stiff.. Even the talents of Washington and Nash couldn't get the tune into the groove zone. The mix didn't help either. Washington's tone was very muddy and Nash's cymbals and overall drum mix are mediocre at best.. I liked everything else I heard on the show.. Nice selections Scott!
  2. My favorite drummers with Tolliver are Jimmy Hopps and George Brown. Both played with emotional fire and swung hard!
  3. Next time I call SS1, I'm expecting him to pass the phone to Sonny Rollins! Damn.. Wish I could have been there.. Had a weekend gig in Kalamazoo...
  4. Nearly legit organ? What does that mean? "Excuse me sir, do you have a permit for that organ?" "Why yes, it's right here." "Do you realize this permit is expired?" "Yeah, but it expired yesterday. This organ is nearly legit."
  5. Nice playlist Scotty... I especially enjoyed the Hatza track.. It reminded me of the times I got to play with him and Bollenbeck when they were brought here several years ago..
  6. Alas, not yet. I'm hopeful that we will be streaming, and/or Podcasting our local music programs sometime soon. (It was actually the fact that we're not streaming that gave me the thought that I should post my playlist on the internet). Good stuff! Beam me up Scotty..
  7. Scott, I'm glad you're posting this. I heard some of these trax while driving home from lessons.. Nice selections!
  8. This might have gotten posted a little too late
  9. In addition to Jovino, Seattle is blessed with a large number of great pianists ..including: John Hansen, Marc Seales, Randy Halberstadt, Darin Clendenin, Butch Nordahl , and Ryan Burns. It also boasts an unusualy cadre of quailty UPRIGHT bassists : Chuck Deardorf, Clipper Anderson, Jeff Johnson, Phil Sparks, Larry Holloway among them. and let's not forget: Jay Thomas ( a quadruple threat on both trumpet and reeds ) Thom Marriot, Vern Seilert and Paul Mazzio ( from Portland ) on trumpets, Mark Taylor, Travis Ranney, Jim Coile, Hans Teuber, Hadley Caliman, and Bill Ramsay are all great sax players ( All these are from the Origin "Artists" list -and can be checked out there ) Is Jessica Williams still around the area? By the way Phil, pianist Dick Reynolds sends his regards..
  10. Well, though I personally don't like Virgil Donati's attitude or approach to the drumkit, I wish the promoter and club owner the best of luck..
  11. Wow! I never knew... I really enjoyed that clinic. Simon is a great drummer and a genuinely nice person and gave a lot of useful tips and exercises during his clinic.
  12. sure, everything's relative. my faves currently with us include Kilson, Stewart, DeJohnnette to name a few i've seen live somewhat recently. it's like saying Slash is a bogus guitarist. sure, onstage with McLaughlin, Sco, Frisell, Metheny, Eubanks, Stern, Seeger ... or, take a younger age group, say, Hunter, Krasno, Moreno, Rogers, Bernard, ... Slash probably wouldn't fare too well. but Slash in his element, can any of the above touch him ? i think not. maybe Vai ... a cat like that, could do some damage ... Guys like Donati are "Chopzillas" , pyrotechnic freaks with superchops and are naturally big hits with the drum companies who eagerly sign them up for endorsements with lots of magazine hype, and whether the drummer(s) has any real musical value is typically not all that important. The drum companies are more interested in a flashy image to help sell their products to lots of young drummers who are easily taken in by the hype of who is the fastest, flashiest, and loudest,,,, This really turns me off because too many drum companies and magazines promote these "Drumslingers" ,, sending the message that drumming is a competitive sport.. I have heard many of the best drummers around the planet, known and unknown over the past 35 years, and for me it's not really about how much drumnastic flash a drummer can cram into a groove, solo, or an 8 bar section, it's about how the drummer puts his skills together; Does he listen and tastefully interact with the music and musicians he is playing with? Does he play in the style of the music being played? A technical and rudimental background is essential but can get out of hand at times. I have friends who can play dazzling solos but can't sit in a rhythm section without overplaying and overstating every little accent in every tune. You mention 3 of my favorites.. Kilson, Stewart, and DeJohnette are 3 drummers who have amazing chops, know when to leave space, always play for the music (and tastefully) as well as lots of emotional fire and imagination, and most importantly know how to listen and play with sensitivity. I saw Simon Philips do a clinic last year and was blown away! He has truly amazing chops and has obviously spent lots of time studying, practicing, listening, and has developed his skills to a very high level, and I'm sure can play anything Donati can play. He played a great solo that had composition and also demonstrated his ability to play many different styles of music including straight ahead jazz. I thought he was a rock player and was delighted when he did a whole segment on straight ahead playing, and talked and demonstrated the styles of drummers like Philly Joe, Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, and Tony Williams!
  13. absolutely no musical value ? dude, what's he supposed to do now ? get into the meat tenderizing business ? Dude, he wouldn't just tenderize the meat, he would pulverize into tiny shredded pieces !! So what if he can play 32nd note triplets relentlessly on a double bass drum pedal at 180 beats per minute?? I like drummers who think musically when they comp behind a solo, trade bars, solo, or play fills... Drummers who know how to listen, have chops to spare , but can play tastefully and know when to leave space.. To me that's musical value, it's not about who's the fastest or the loudest! Listen Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette, Peter Erskine, Dennis Chambers, or Billy Cobbham with the Mahavishnu if you want to hear some dazzling jazz rock drumming! Peace out
  14. I saw Virgil Donati at a multi artist drum clinic and was not at all impressed. His solo had absolutely no musical value and was instead a macho display of how fast and loud a drumkit (with double bass drum pedals of course) can be played. He displayed no sense of composition, phrasing, or any dynamics in his solo. It makes me wonder if this guy can actually play in a rhythm section without overplaying everybody else. I could stand only about 12 minutes of his fierce display and walked out with ringing ears.. In my opinion, Donati's approach to drums is like it's an ego driven competitive sport, and I was equally turned off by his narcissistic "I'm too hip for the room" attitude and heard from others later that he was not real friendly with the other clinicians or the drum shop employees who were there to help set up and assist the clinicians. Now I'm not dissing drummers with a more drumnastic approach. There are drummers with dazzling chops like Steve Smith, Chad Whackerman, Simon Philips, Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Coliato, and Dom Famularo who are genuinely great players and clinicians and are nice guys as well. Sorry Rick, even if I lived in SF, you couldn't pay me to go to a Virgil Donati show..
  15. I guess the show isn't going to continue on WBLV.. According to Lazaro, people have been complaining about the show, that there's basically too much talking and not enough music. Personally, I love the show and hate to see it go.. Now there's 2 programs I love and can't listen to on the radio, Jim Wilke's show and now Listen Here.
  16. You da man Lazaro.. .. As you know, I've been immensely enjoying your shows since 1983 ..
  17. I first heard Adam on WJZZ with the band ETERNAL WIND. He's very creative and takes the music he plays to some interesting places..
  18. What a site! There's even a Capt. Beefheart live video DONE at Detroit's Eastown Rock Theatre in 1971 and dig it.... I WAS THERE !!!
  19. Check 'em out... Kind of a weird cross between Yes, Capt. Beefheart, and Peter Gabriel.. http://mapsandatlases.org/
  20. Oh man,, We pitched a bitch at Founders! Played our asses off all night !!!
  21. HAPPY BIRTHNESS MARK
  22. I like aol ok and I guess I'm just used to it and don't want to have to dump a long time email address..
  23. As a result of Vonage's incredibly inept and dysfunctional network, my AT&T service was canceled and I lost my old number in the transfer over to Vonage. Now I have to ship the modem back to Vonage at my expense (ouch), and the cost to start a new land phone account with SBC-AT&T with a new phone number would be totally at my expense! To make a long story short, they (Vonage) didn't bother to tell me when they set up my account, that their VOIP modem system is not compatible with AOL. They just went ahead and set everything up which included terminating my AT&T service and arranging the transfer of my old number which I now cannot get back and shipped me the incompatible modem .. After hooking up the voice modem Monday night, my brother and I spent 3 frustrating hours trying to get the system to work and decided to call the customer care number that came with the instructions. After 3 frustrating calls with at least 20 minutes of wait time each, and different techs each time who could barely speak english, I finally insisted that the third tech connect me to a supervisor who informed me that "Vonage would not work with AOL and that I should cancel AOL if I wanted the phone to work". So I canceled the account with Vonage and decided to cut my losses and canceled the reactivation of my land phone with AT&T-SBC and am going to go with my cell phone. Fortunately, ATT&T-SBC was kind enough to set up an automatic message refering my lost number to my cell phone number. If you already have Vonage and haven't had a problem yet, GOOD LUCK.. If you are considering a broadband phone system .... PLEASE..... DO NOT SELECT VONAGE!!
