  1. I saw Mundell Lowe perform three times, each time with guitarist Mike Magnelli. The last time I saw him perform was in 2014, when he played as a duo with Magnelli on one night and in a quartet with Magnelli and a local bassist and drummer on the other night. I hadn't planned on going both nights, but I couldn't resist seeing Lowe twice in two days. I'm glad I had a chance to tell him how much I enjoyed the performance and shake his hand after the second night, and I have a signed CD of his album with Lloyd Wells from my first time seeing him years before. I'm thankful I got to hear that glorious tone in person. Thank you for the music, Mr. Lowe, and rest in peace.
  2. I don't think this was mentioned elsewhere, but the great Lee Konitz turned 90 on October 13th. I had the privilege of seeing him perform two sets the following day at the Kennedy Center, where the crowd sang 'Happy Birthday' and someone brought out a cake, with members of Lee's family in the audience. My wife took some photos at the end of the second set, so I will try to post them later. I hadn't seen him perform since February 2015, and I hope that I don't go that long without seeing him perform again. Here's wishing Lee Konitz the best.
  3. I'd like to download some of the Savory albums, but I will not likely be buying the Mosaic set, even if I'd love to hear the new Stuff Smith tracks.
  4. Happy Birthday, Mr. Tyner!
  5. I believe that Paul DePodesta of Moneyball fame is still on the payroll, so analytics will continue to play a part in the team's personnel decisions. Sashi Brown made a lot of major mistakes (e.g., passing on Carson Wentz, drafting and otherwise acquiring an awful receiving corps, etc.), but he did draft some quality young talent and accrued draft capital that will make the next (and hopefully competent) GM's job easier.
  6. Here's to a speedy recovery and a happy birthday for Mr. Harris!
  7. I remember watching the Smalls live stream a few years ago when Jon Hendricks sat in with Tardo Hammer for the majority of a set to sing Monk tunes. Hendricks cast new light on familiar material and it was fascinating to hear. I haven't heard much of his work, but judging from the samples of Lambert, Hendricks and Bavan live albums with top-notch bands, I've been missing out on a lot of fun. Thank you for the music, Mr. Hendricks, and rest in peace.
  8. I never got to see Ben Riley perform in person, but I have enjoyed what I have heard of his work as a sideman with Monk and others. Looking at his AllMusic credits, I was reminded of some of his sideman work that I have and found several albums that I would like to hear. Thank you for the music, Mr. Riley, and rest in peace.
  9. I recommend Herring's Lifeboat, which has Greg Osby on many of the tracks.
  10. I read this the other day. It is a fascinating article.
  11. Happy Birthday, Mr. Heath!
  12. I knew when I saw the results last year that this might happen. To be honest, it made me realize that I wasn't part of the magazine's target audience and I didn't renew my subscription. This is a slap in the face for all of the living and dead masters who actually deserve the recognition.
  13. I enjoy his work on Alan Dawson's Waltzin' with Flo, an album I highly recommend, but I didn't know much about him. I'll have to check out more of his work. Thank you for the music and your contributions as an educator, Mr. McGhee, and rest in peace.
  14. Are we sure that his tiny hands would be sufficient for lawn duty?
  15. I don''t have any of his leader dates, but he was one heck of a drummer and vocalist. Thank you for the music, Mr. Tate, and rest in peace.
  16. I caught Hudson at the Detroit Jazz Fest and it was a lot of fun. Anyone who can catch the group live should.
  17. I had hoped to see John Abercrombie at the 2016 Detroit Jazz Fest, but I instead caught Stanley Cowell with Charles Tolliver, BIlly Harper, Jay Anderson and Carl Allen at another stage. Attending multi-stage events sometimes involves making difficult decisions. I had never seen Abercrombie, Cowell or Tolliver, so I made the decision to catch a powerful set by Cowell and his incredible band. I had purchased a 'Get Well' card when Abercrombie was hospitalized earlier in the summer, but he was released before I could figure out what I should write. I would like to check out some Gateway material and more of Abercrombie's leader work in the future. Thank you for the music, Mr. Abercrombie, and rest in peace.
  18. I enjoyed his playing at the Pittsburgh Jazz Seminar last year, which was the last time that I saw Geri Allen. Incidentally, the impressive Jamison Ross, who also won the Monk Competition, was on the gig as well.
  19. The two discs ares still available. If I don't hear from anyone before Saturday, I am going to sell them online.
  20. I must've missed the email in my inbox. I'll have to check it out. Thanks, Dan.
  21. The great drummer, Frank Capp, passed away on September 12th. I have all of the wonderful Capp/Pierce Juggernaut albums, and I just picked up The Frank Capp Trio Presents Rickey Woodard last week. I was giving the quartet album a third spin when I looked up Woodard and then decided to see what Capp was up to, only to find out the sad news. Thank you for the music, Mr. Capp, and rest in peace.
  22. I have Discs 1 & 2 of the Bobby Hackett Mosaic, still sealed. I am looking to swap them for two different Mosaic discs. I am hoping that I am not the only one who picks up partial sets on occasion. PM me.
  23. I don't know what to say about the incident in question, but I wish that Hino would tour stateside, as I'd love the chance to see him perform. The two Blue Note dates I've heard are excellent.
  24. I traveled to New York to see the great Roy Haynes on Wednesday. On my way home the next day, I stopped by a record store and found Sonny's Prestige box (which, coincidentally, Haynes appears on) for $29.99. It is a set that I had wanted to hear for years, so it is pretty incredible that I happened to finally buy it on Sonny's 87th birthday. I hope Sonny had a happy birthday.
  25. I was just wondering about her a few weeks ago. I'm sorry to hear this news.
