Brian Lynch has a Kickstarter campaign going for a Latin Woody Shaw tribute. Joining him are fellow trumpeters Sean Jones, Dave Douglas, Diego Urcola, Etienne Charles, Josh Evans, Michael Rodriguez and Philip Dizack, along with pianist Zaccai Curtis, bassist Luques Curtis, drummer Obed Calvaire and percussionists Pedrito Martinez, Little Johnny Rivero and Anthony Carrillo. I'm excited to hear this one when it comes out. Here is the link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1927361678/support-brian-lynchs-latin-jazz-project-madera-lat.

Having only heard (and enjoyed) Denis Charles on one disc, Organic, with Thomas Borgmann and Wilber Morris, this thread inspired me to buy Drum Talk. I also haven't heard much of Susie Ibarra, so I'm looking forward to listening to Drum Talk to hear more of both Charles and Ibarra.

Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
Justin V replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I didn't even realize that the Hawkins set was on lost chance. His Keynote box would make it to the desert island with me, so I'm sure that I would've really appreciated the Mosaic. -
Thanks for pointing this out, Ted. I'm looking forward to reading it; I'm sure that DiNovi's excellent Memories of 52nd Street: Con Alma will accompany my reading. Although I may never be able to make it up to Canada to see him play in person, it makes me smile when I get an email from Gene DiNovi telling people about his upcoming gigs.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Rollins!

That is a truly great line. I enjoyed Stewart's playing on George Shearing's That Shearing Sound, but I never got around to checking out his other work. Thank you for the music, Mr. Stewart, and rest in peace.

Dick Meldonian is on the CD's bonus cut, 'Jumpin' at the Woodside'. I don't have many Progressive dates, but it seems that they like to release CD-only bonus tracks.

I remember enjoying his playing on a Dick Meldonian LP, and I just picked up his The Man I Love (with Meldonian, Scott Hamilton, George Mraz and Billy Hart) a few months ago. Thank you for the music, Mr. Smith, and rest in peace.

Coincidentally, I listened to the excellent Smithville on Sunday for the first time in a few years and wondered how he was doing. I'll have to check out some more of his leader dates and work as a sideman (particularly with Horace Silver). Thank you for the music, Mr. Smith, and rest in peace.

I think that most jazz fans would kill to have been a fly on the wall at Rudy Van Gelder's studio. Thank you for your contributions, Mr. Van Gelder, and rest in peace.

I only saw Toots Thielemans perform once, in a duo with Kenny Werner at the 2011 Detroit Jazz Fest. When Toots took the stage, he jokingly encouraged the crowd to give him a standing ovation. I remember his achingly romantic sound that seemed like the perfect fit for an evening concert at the waterfront stage. At the end of the concert, a thunderstorm came rolling in, and Toots was whisked away on a golf cart. As Toots was being driven away, a guy (who had presumably been inspired by Toots) blew a harmonica in his direction as he went past. It was a somewhat surreal ending to an hour of beautiful music. I've since added a few more Toots albums to my collection and have found them to be consistently enjoyable. One of my favorites that I've heard is Footprints (which has Toots also playing guitar and whistling) and features a band consisting of Mulgrew Miller, Rufus Reid and Lewis Nash. I'm looking forward to exploring more of his music. Thank you for the music, Mr. Thielemans, and rest in peace.

I never saw him perform in person, but I've enjoyed his playing on recordings. Surprisingly, out of the 7 dates of his I have (I'll soon be adding Wise One), only one is from his original Blue Note run (the wonderful Stick-Up!). I'll have to rectify that. Thank you for the music, Mr. Hutcherson, and rest in peace.

TV host John McLaughlin, RIP
Justin V replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Someone needs to change the thread title to something like, 'TV Personality John McLaughlin, RIP.' Not cool. -
This is horrible news. I hope that the police catch his attackers and that Avreeayl Ra makes a speedy and full recovery. He's a heck of a drummer. I haven't seen him perform in person, but I hope to see him at some point in Chicago or with one of the many Chicago groups that play here.

I saw Houston Person for the first time last year. Before the show started, he was eating dinner with the house band and you could hear his great laugh coming from the corner of the club. I was mighty impressed with how he treated the melodies and how he developed his solos and infused them with such warmth and feeling. For as long of a career as he has had and as often as he has recorded, I think that he doesn't get the recognition that he deserves.

Are you using the Android browser or Chrome? I don't think I've ever used the Android browser, but I've had zero issues with Chrome.

One of the many pleasures of the inaugural Freedom of Sound Festival two years ago was having the opportunity to see Andrew Cyrille perform in several different contexts. Between his work with Charles Lloyd and this, it's also great to see Bill Frisell working as a sideman in some interesting groups. I'd like to hear this one.

You're confusing him with Alan Barnes, the British saxophonist. I am a big Donald Byrd fan, but I haven't gotten around yet to Black Byrd or the The Blackbyrds. It's sad to see Detroit lose another respected musician. Rest in peace, Mr. Barnes.

Charlie Parker Unheard Bird: The Unissued Takes 2016 Verve
Justin V replied to l p's topic in New Releases
I'm probably the only person here who owns Unheard Bird but doesn't have the Verve box set. The only Verve Bird albums I own are Now's the Time and Bird and Diz (the latter of which was my first Bird album). As such, I'm trying to treat it as its own collection of unreleased takes and am avoiding listening to the released masters (except for the quintet tracks, which appear to be the entirety of the quintet portion of the session). Besides some fine Bird, I'm a huge Hank Jones and Roy Haynes fan as well, so this set is a great addition to my collection. It's quite remarkable to have so much previously unreleased Bird come out 61 years after his death, and the sound quality is excellent. I definitely recommend it. I'm still absorbing the Savoy and Dial box that I got after Christmas 2014, but I will eventually pick up the Verve box and the Charlie Parker with Strings set. -
The Complete Master Jazz Piano Series Mosaic is one that flies under the radar and is well worth hearing.
-
I'm mainly familiar with Claude Williamson through the flawless Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges album, but he is all over the Cooper, Holman and Rosolino Mosaic, which I need to pull out. I'll be picking up more of his work soon, as I have none of his leader dates. Thank you for the music, Mr. Williamson, and rest in peace.

10 CDs for $15 shipped - mystery lots
Justin V replied to clifford_thornton's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Dang. Can I be on the waiting list for a future lot? -
I saw Trio X in Rochester in 2014, and Dominic Duval, Jr., who is a heck of a bassist himself, filled in for his father. There was a get-well card at the gig, but I had hoped that he just had the flu or something. Thank you for the music, Mr. Duval, and rest in peace.
