  1. uh huh....but what happens when you try to install something like XP? does it just end up like an icon on the desktop?
  2. I hope it's a West Coast band. one of the stewardesses looks like Dorothy Provine.
  3. some bad song choices. Wonderful World? Just to show he's heard of Louis Armstrong?
  4. though I just spent the entire weekend figuring out how to copy and burn DVDs on it, I still like my Mac - though the programs on it are even more poorly illustrated than with PCs. (eg: Handbrake, free shareware that I got off the internet, has a so-called "users manual" that don't say shit). once you get it working, however, it really works. still, you MAC guys who write these programs need to learn how to speak English. ALSO: IMPORTANT QUESTION - if you get one of those programs that allows you to use Windows on your MAC, do you first have to install a Windowns operating system (like XP, etc)?
  5. not that it's completely relevant here, but Bill Triglia told me Stan Kenton didn't like Dave Schildkraut as a soloist; he preferred guys like Mariano and Konitz. Also there's a story about circa 1950, when both Dave and Bird were on tour with Kenton, and people thought Dave, practicing in his room, was Bird (somewhat like the old Mingus blindfold test). The last time Kenton called Schildkraut, who was broke at the time, to join his band, Dave hemmed and hawed until his wife picked up the extension phone and said "Mr. Kenton, he'll be there." Dave takes nice solos on Edgon Heath (a Bill Russo piece) and on some of the Bill Holman stuff (Fearless Finlay, etc). Also, here and there.

on the Body and Soul version that I remember, he just keeps repeating the same phrase. A lot of "outside" players just were not that good on changes.
  9. I have lots of old boxed sets, but I don't know the time line - Columbia put out lots of old jazz boxed LP sets, there's a Woody Herman, a New Orleans, a New York, maybe a Chicago set - there was lots of this stuff - also a box of 1920s stuff. Lots of European issue boxed sets from RCA, a blues set, saxophones, a general history; also MCA issued a few Decca blues boxes. So this other claim is sheer fiction. also there's a French Louis Armstrong LP box - just thought of it -

re-above, there was a Euro LP in which he tried to play at least a standard or two (I remember Body and Soul) but the results were not good.
  11. real name: Mark Shangold. He used to sit in for Al Haig at Gregory's in the 1970s.
  12. I find the gay rights angle more interesting -
  13. now I'm feeling guilty. But I've tried to like I'm-Mad Jamal. I really have. I even went to see him in 1977. as a matter of fact I took a picture:
  14. half as good (twice as bad?)
  15. I know exactly what you mean - that's the way I feel about the Democratic Party.
  16. I humbly disagree - there is a difference between mannerism and style - and that, to me, is all mannerism. For a welcome contrast listen to Count Basie play the piano - same basic concept of intermittent musical coloration - but his comments connect and add up to something. And they have a reason for being.
  17. happy to report that I just installed Logic Express (an Apple program) on my Mac - and there's the kind of bug which is incredibly stupid - Apple designed the program so it is impossible to open prior files that have been saved in the program, in the regular way - as in "Open" and then "file" - at first I was tearing my hair out, but a trip to the internet showed me that 1) someone had devised a way to circumvent this and 2) Apple had never come up with a solution, except a later version of the program I still love my Mac, but this is dumber than ANYTHING I ever saw from Microsoft. If it wasn't for the internet I never would have been able to figure this one out.
  18. awwww, Larry, don't start up with the Nazi jokes again (especially since I'm afraid to join in) -
