  1. no response because everybody knows Bix and Tram were left wing Democrats - Bix campaigned for FDR, as a matter of fact -
  2. how does he sound? Last time I saw him, maybe 1970 in Central Park, he was basically comatose-
  3. that poor seller's going to take a bath on shipping -
  4. Jordan did tell me, now that I think about it, that Miles tried to get him bounced from the band. In his words, Bird told them to fuck-off.
  5. "And Duke Jordan is much better than his reputation, methinks" does Duke Jordan have a bad rep? that's news to me, not saying it is not true, but to me he is one of the giants of the piano, with a wonderful lyrical style. In the short time I knew him I realized, unfortunately, that he was a difficult guy, but he could still play. As a matter of fact, he told me how he and Bill Evans used to go to a studio to play duets (wish I could have been a fly on the wall for that one) -
  6. actually it's not - he is saying above that a horn transducer would be used as a microphone - which I am assuming is pre-electrical - the article (and I rarely trust Wikepedia) indicates actual microphones are used in the electric (post-acoustic) era - most (but not all) of the early country and blues recordings were done electrically - so the question still stands -
  7. "The studio of the day would have tracked straight to disk using a horn transducer as a mic." Glenn, is this true even post-electrical? (and you're not by any chance related to Glen Glenn?)
  8. this is unhappy stuff but, as you realize as you get older, you are more and more likely to experience such things. These events almost seem out of place in such a safe and positive environment. Somehow it reminds me of that line from that Muppets movie where a pirate dies and one of the Muppets exclaims "he can't be dead! This is a kids movie!" I mean, this is Organissimo!
  9. just curious - I was reading up about about Anderson, who, chronologically, would have, if he were so inclined, been a 2nd generation bebopper (give or take a few years) - and he mentions Bird and Prez as early inspirations - do there exist any recordings of him in this vein?
  10. "a lack of external sexual organs" uh oh - looks like your wife is having a CHEWY - just kidding - little girls are nice -
  11. loud but not THAT loud - that's kinda silly. Sounds like a vacuum cleaner. I've been using the VPI for about 10 years, and on several major reissue projects. Does a great job, though not as radical as some may suggest, if one has a good turntable, pre-amp, converters, etc. On the other hand, the guy who used to run a big record store in downtown NY (can't remember the name of it, it was oriented toward a lot of show material, but also had a good jazz and blues collection) called my LP transfers "the best in the business."
  12. that would explain the key change -
  13. "the transfers of 78-rpm shellacks recorded in a studio, are usually done accurately." this is really wrong - there are many speed errors made from that era -
  14. I remember it well - good artwork, bad writing -
  15. by the way, Armstrong was also a great writer - as Chuck has already mentioned -
  16. CNN, this very week, actually did a piece on (bad) rock musicians who are also (bad) painters -
  17. already know the answer - Joe Sue Mike that'll cost you 50 bucks -
  18. well it's true that official-dom has royally screwed up the Beatle catalog. Geoffry Emerick's book is interesting but suspect - first of all he has been challenged on a lot of his recollections, and his response was less than comprehensive. Also, he supervised the anthologies, which frequently sound like crap due to the use of digital de-hiss, which dries out the sound and even has a bit of that disgusting digital gurgle. So I am sympathetic to enterprises like this -
  19. there are actually Pee Wee Russell paintings hanging at the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies - Tony Bennett also paints - and I actually heard Larry Rivers play (saxophone) years ago - and Kenny G paints by number (or maybe he PLAYS by number) -
  20. is Ebbetts for real, or is he named after the old stadium in which the Brooklyn Dodgers played?
  21. is this a Sonnenblick production?
  22. just noticed, AL Drears is on drums on this - terrific player, I think I played a wedding with him in the late 1970s - anybody know whatever happend to him?
  23. well, I hope I haven't chased him away - maybe I should read that restraining order I got this morning -
