  1. Thanks to Steve Schwartz for featuring me on his show, Jazz From Studio Four on Friday, February 9 from 9:00p - 11:00p EST. Listen live: WGBH Online
  2. This is one of my favorite records. They've got a serious vibe on this date. Even the sad piano and studio and something to it. And always a pleasure to hear John Gilmore outside of Sun Ra's band (not that I don't enjoy hearing him in the Arkestra).
  3. Was in a cab tonight with a Russian driver who was very familiar with Roslavets, Obouhov, Alexandrov and Feinberg. I'm working on an arrangement of a Roslavets prelude, Largo from 1915, for my quintet. Maybe we'll play it at the Vanguard in March. The three "Compositions" from 1914 are really nice. I have the music to the second sonata, but it's a bitch to play and not all that satisfying for me. I love music that stretches tonality like a rubber band, but strictly serial pieces like that are a little tough for me to appreciate. I have Hamelin's recording of Roslavets. I like Schoenberg's Op. 11 but the later piano music is not for me - at least now. Never say never. Have to admit I'm unfamiliar with the Busoni sonatinas.
  4. I thought he was a drummer.
  5. Samuil Feinberg Sonatas #5 (Op. 10) and #7 (Op. 21). These pieces are a nightmare to read but well worth the effort. Check 'em out: Tracks 1.2.3. Track 7.
  6. I think that's some of the dumbest ignorant shit I ever seen posted here.
  7. Really? I thought it was pretty feeble compared to the version of the routine on the original recording I never heard the recorded version. Guess I'll have to check it out.
  8. I've had a copy of this for a long time. The "Unity Airlines" bit is hilarious. Unfortunately my copy is pretty cloudy during the Cannonball/BillEvans/PhillyJoe tune.
  9. Lenny Bruce in "Dance Hall Racket" 1953
  10. I'll be at the Sammons Center in Dallas on May 2. It's a long way off, but I'm looking forward to returning to my home town, not without pitstops at Sonny Bryan's and Goff's Hamburgers. Will you join me Sangrey?
  11. I'm a big fan of Wayne and his influence on my composing has been tremendous. I know Atlantis, Phantom Navigator, Joy Ryder and High Life inside out. I'm as big a cheerleader of post-WeatherReport Wayne as anyone, but that's no reason to knock any of his older tunes, Footprints included. It's a beautiful tune and will always be one. And if it's become enormously popular, that's something to celebrate and not bemoan. For a great version of Footprints: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXczdXC1HZM Dig the introduction! If any of you are tired of this tune, it's YOUR fault. Wayne is writing new music all the time, and if on occasion he reaches into his older repertoire, the piece is always reinvented. Check out "Children of the Night" on High Life or "Orbits" from Alegria. Don't blame the (Jazz) Messenger.
  12. It's okay to leave the hotel every once in a while... http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...st&p=597599

  14. Third trade of eights with Miles. Not the same notes, but the same rhythm and other similarities... Do you hear what I hear?
  15. In their own way (among others):
  16. Elvin's first two on Blue Note with Joe Farrell and Jimmy Garrison.
  17. Anyone been yet? I'll be in Chicago this weekend and plan to go Saturday afternoon. More Info
  18. I'll have a trio at Pete Miller's in Evanston with Clark Sommers and George Fludas. Hope to see the Chicago contingent.
  19. Trane at the Half Note - keeps me from leaving the gym too soon.
  20. Pat Patrick's son, Deval is the next governor of Massachusetts.
  21. Bryant's was excellent to me, but what do I know. I didn't need to eat a thing the rest of the day. I liked the lobbies of some of the old downtown hotels: The Phillips and the President, where we went for drinks after the concert. Other than that, downtown was kind of desolate. The Folly Theater was nice.
  22. < MR. HOSPITALITY!! Thanks, Eric.
  23. I'm not going to have any time for sightseeing, but if anyone is up for joining me for lunch at Bryant's on Saturday, please let me know. I might be able to arrange a comp for the show.
  24. This is some of the best Bud I've ever heard. I haven't listened to it in a while, but the chords he plays, such as on the introduction and ending of My Heart Stood Still is some very serious modern bi-tonal shit. If I played some examples on the piano for someone and asked "who's this?" the last person you might think of is Bud Powell.
