  1. So if you're scrupulous, there'll one more available from Mosaic; and if you're not, there'll be one more available on Ebay.
  2. As I've said many times before, the Shelly Manne Black Hawk CDs from the early '90s, for example, are among the best I've ever heard. Many of the early '90s Fantasy issues (as well as many from other labels) have a subtle resolution and presence not found on many "new and improved" 24-bit releases. Couldn't agree more. Those CD transfers sound fine, but it would be sad if these recordings would be preserved for posterity in CD quality only. Imagine the tapes of important movie classics being destroyed or disappearing, and the only surviving copies being DVDs. True--preserving the original sources would be best. Hans (if I can speak for him) and I were just agreeing with Ray's point that the latest 24-bit CD remasters aren't necessarily superior to early '90s CD issues, and often--to our ears--don't even sound as good.

  4. It is indeed, Stuart. He's posted here to clear a few things up... http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showpost...p;postcount=212 Could you copy/paste that here? Nonmembers of the Hoffman forum can't see that. Thanks!
  5. John Coltrane, "The Prestige Recordings" (Prestige), discs 5-8 DAMN, what a great set! And that early '90s Fantasy sound quality is hard to beat, current technology notwithstanding. Real glad I picked this up for peanuts last year during the Concord Blowout Sale.
  6. The Max Roach set has moved from "Running Low" to "Last Chance".
  7. Not gonna say it, wouldn't be prudent! Hmmmmm, would you prefer that I create a separate post for each one of the 16 discs in this set?
  8. John Coltrane, "The Prestige Recordings" (Prestige), discs 1-4
  9. I know--there are far more items that ARE on my wish list than AREN'T. I guess it's useful if you want to give potential gift-givers access to it (not that I would--nobody ever gives ME a Mosaic ). I just used it to get a count of how many Mosaics I might actually want--and then got depressed.
  10. Anyone else notice it? Didn't take me long to put way too many things on it.
  11. Can you say whether we'll like them?
  12. Any chance of getting a similar version of just Glenn's vocalizations?
  13. The Basie box was the standard square Universal set identical to the Mosaic big boxes. Like your (tranemonk's) Farlow set (remember that one, and who turned you on to it? ).
  14. John Coltrane, "The Classic Quartet--Complete Impulse! Studio Recordings," discs 4 and 5
  15. The absolute best!
  16. Even though the "complete" is inaccurate...I still really enjoy this set, it's a nice one-stop shop for a magnificent recording legacy. Yep. Now on to discs 3 and 4.
  17. Maybe you can give it away to one of your numerous babe-a-licious MySpace Friends. You think any of them like John Zorn? Actually, you think any of them have ever heard of John Zorn? Who the hell cares??? Some of those babes are HOT.
  18. True, but we're talking BEETHOVEN here! Not his most profound work, but still very enjoyable and worthwhile, IMHO.
  19. John Coltrane, "The Classic Quartet--Complete Impulse! Studio Recordings," discs 1 and 2
  20. Maybe you can give it away to one of your numerous babe-a-licious MySpace Friends.
  21. How stupid is that? Make unreasonable demands and get nothing, rather than negotiate a reasonable "something" based on projected sales of a jazz CD (what might that be - maybe 3,000 worldwide). Must be the lawyer representing the estate! At least someone is beginning to see the light. why are you slamming the lawyer??? Because they're always to blame, even if they're not... I always blame lawyers . . . . . . . . . . and I am one!
  22. I have--and love--this Beaux Arts Trio set: Some others on the board may find this to be too "conventional-wisdom-ish" for their tastes, but I really enjoy it. This is the second cycle of Beethoven Piano Trios that the BA Trio recorded, in the '70s and '80s iirc. The first cycle, with slightly different personnel, was recorded in the '60s EDIT: I see that Bentsy recommended the same set while I was typing this post.

Reminds me of the old AllDirect.com site. Damn, I miss that site--although my wallet doesn't!

It's good to hear that there's a telephone contact for customer service. No trading wonderfully personal emails with the warm-hearted "Claire"--at least not yet.
