  1. John Coltrane, "The Classic Quartet--Complete Impulse! Studio Recordings," discs 4 and 5
  2. The absolute best!
  3. Even though the "complete" is inaccurate...I still really enjoy this set, it's a nice one-stop shop for a magnificent recording legacy. Yep. Now on to discs 3 and 4.
  4. Maybe you can give it away to one of your numerous babe-a-licious MySpace Friends. You think any of them like John Zorn? Actually, you think any of them have ever heard of John Zorn? Who the hell cares??? Some of those babes are HOT.
  5. True, but we're talking BEETHOVEN here! Not his most profound work, but still very enjoyable and worthwhile, IMHO.
  6. John Coltrane, "The Classic Quartet--Complete Impulse! Studio Recordings," discs 1 and 2
  7. Maybe you can give it away to one of your numerous babe-a-licious MySpace Friends.
  8. How stupid is that? Make unreasonable demands and get nothing, rather than negotiate a reasonable "something" based on projected sales of a jazz CD (what might that be - maybe 3,000 worldwide). Must be the lawyer representing the estate! At least someone is beginning to see the light. why are you slamming the lawyer??? Because they're always to blame, even if they're not... I always blame lawyers . . . . . . . . . . and I am one!
  9. I have--and love--this Beaux Arts Trio set: Some others on the board may find this to be too "conventional-wisdom-ish" for their tastes, but I really enjoy it. This is the second cycle of Beethoven Piano Trios that the BA Trio recorded, in the '70s and '80s iirc. The first cycle, with slightly different personnel, was recorded in the '60s EDIT: I see that Bentsy recommended the same set while I was typing this post.

Reminds me of the old AllDirect.com site. Damn, I miss that site--although my wallet doesn't!

It's good to hear that there's a telephone contact for customer service. No trading wonderfully personal emails with the warm-hearted "Claire"--at least not yet.
  12. You can still contact Sony through the information in the booklet. They may still have some replacement discs for this set. Hopefully, they stocked up on A LOT once they realized what a problem they had with the F'ed up packaging.
  13. Here's a link for the Uchida set (also on modern piano): Uchida set It's a bit more expensive than the Vox sets recommended by Chuck, but in case you want to compare them. Amazon doesn't have any sound samples for the Uchida set, but you can find some here (along with another review).
  14. I have the Brautigam set, and it's wonderful (be sure to get the complete box shown by Mike, which includes the variations--there are also separate BIS Brautigam boxes of just the sonatas OR the variations). But Brautigam uses a fortepiano which, although authentic, is not to everyone's taste. I also have Uchida's set, and recommend it--she has a nice touch with Mozart (although others, e.g., clem, may disagree).
  15. It's quite acceptable to my ears, Matthew. Really must give the set a spin, don't listen to it enough. Picked it up for something like $30 in the zweitausendeins bonanza ! Those were the days. Think we'll see another one of those anytime soon?
  16. The Verdict. This time I'll try saying it real softly. Amazing performance. Maybe a bit too understated for this crowd.
  17. Who the heck is this "Chuck" guy, and why is everyone talking about him?
  18. Aww c'mon, don't you confuse them constantly like I do? One thing's for sure (at least based on the one song): I'd never confuse her with either of them.
  19. "My style is like Ella Fitzgerald or Aretha Franklin"
  20. Somebody explain to me why numbering those sets cost money?! Funnily enough, the price of Selects has gone up since they stopped numbering them. That's because each set becomes first among equals.
  21. Maybe they could sell the numbers separately? That would be great, 'cause the numbers take up a lot less shelf space.
  22. Somebody's been cutting class. Huh? I'm not disagreeing with you... but the second part of my quote (which you deleted) was the relevant part. I know--I just thought you missed my post where I definitively, unambiguously, and authoritatively resolved the issue of whether the big boxes are numbered at time of shipment, as only I am qualified to do. <-----(it's a joke)
  23. Somebody's been cutting class.
  24. You just saved me the embarrassment of starting a thread called "How come my Boooby Hutcherson and Tony Williams Selects aren't numbered?" If I were you, I'd send them back to Mosaic and INSIST that they be numbered.
