  6. Metropolis is not an American film. Silent films around this time varied from 16 to 20 fps and since it's not clear what Lang wished, there's been some healthy debate on the subject. My favorite version was screened at 18 fps.
  7. Don't have cable, so I didn't see this, but I think that the ultimate version would be the one with the extra footage running at 18 fps using the Fitzwater/Davies soundtrack in 5.1 and released on Blu-Ray. I made a soundtrack for this in the spring of '76 for a school project, but never released it.
  8. Sure no prob. Instead of resorting to mathematics, I just ran a "smart playlist" in my own iTunes with the 320kbps coupled with the arbitrary 2-20 minute rule. I figured that it may give a pretty good spread average by doing this because of the quantity of tunes that I currently have on this particular drive at the moment (which is about 156,000 tunes). The exact number that it came up with (this first time) in case you're interested: 10326 songs; 35d:9hr:17m:57s; 145GB Rod
  9. Approximation: your results varying of course, but assuming bit rate at 320kbps and tunes from 2 to 20 minutes in length and 145GB capacity on a 160GB player (actually, it's almost 149GB, but I'm allowing for artwork), you should get approximately 10,000 tunes covering about 35 days (840 hours) on your 160GB iPod. If you want to expand this further by dividing by 40 minutes/LP, then that brings you to 1260 LPs, but, of course, your results will vary.

  11. Yeah, not a debate. Great that your PCs work for you. I had a friend who became convinced to buy a Mac (laptop, I think) 'cause he was forever having problems with his PCs. Afterwards, he would tell me all of the problems that he was having with this new Mac crashing (?!) and I would ask him, "Barry, man, what are you doing to your computers?!" Anyway, he took it in to Apple and it was a major flaw - I think a logic board or some-such thing was gone. Never have known anyone else to have anything close to this happening before on a Mac. A trade was done and all was well. So, yes, there'll be the odd screwup. I've gone thru a lot of iPods - somehow, I'm pretty hard on them and they always go out when I'm 5000 miles away from home. An Apple employee would always go to somewhere in the back of the store and come out in 5 minutes with a new replacement in a box - no charge: no weird restocking fees, etc. Many people, I think, don't have the time, interest or ability to build from scratch. When I had more time, I used to like building my own sound and visual making devices, but I'm thankful for the (nearly) complete well-built goodies available today. I will say that for those of you considering iLife 11, wait until they fix the problem with the iPhoto upgrade that's included. Yup, their software gets funky on the rare occasion too. ® --- Now playing: Sonny Sharrock - Fear of a Ghost Planet
  12. This was THE table to get for DJs - still is for some people. Good, dependable, rock solid and a real breeze to manipulate. I started using these in 1974 in radio stations and they were the club favorite in the 80's, so nearly all of us used them. I didn't actually own one until I could afford it in '92 and then I bought TWO of them with a mixer that sat in a "coffin." Sold both of them just a few years ago and used the money to buy ONE digital Stanton STR8-150 which is what I use today.
  13. ...or she could be an arthritic old lady clutching a handkerchief and muttering about the presence of the camera.
  14. Congratulations! I'd recommend looking at the series of books called "Eat This Not That" to see what it is you're really getting in your typical store-bought food. Here are a few from Amazon. If you have time to thumb thru them, you can usually see them at the major book retailers. Sit and look up some of your favorite foods and drinks to see if they're on the "Eat This" left-side page or the "Not That" right side page. You may be surprised! BTW: I've been vegetarian bordering on vegan for 37 years. A little over 6 feet and 180 lbs./82 kilos
  15. It's been a crappy month y'all...
  16. With some other singers, I'd cringe when seeing some of these tunes (especially "...Wonderful World"), but since I've heard Wyatt do most of these songs already - bringing an ineffable beauty to them in other settings - I really didn't worry about it in the end. He, of all people, knows the sappy trails that lead to and fro "...Wonderful World" and I'm sure that some extra thought went into how he could make it his own. He's done it here. I can actually listen to this song now. Nile Rogers wrote "At Last I Am Free."
  17. Yup, it really is. Hafta say that what others are calling noodling, I thought was called the expressive style of getting a lot out of a few carefully placed notes. Quiet intensity of form going from "ppp" to "fff". Dramatic pauses? We know what Miles would've said.
  18. Yeah, I liked that MUCH more than the 2010 version, tho I liked Jamal's playing a bit more - (maybe, it's hard to hear) - on the '10 version (minus the "...Silver Lining/Effendi (slight)" opening, of course). Ideally: • keep the rhythm section of '05 (please!) • keep much of Jamal's playing from '10 • add the very fine ending (7:10 on... {Harmonies!}) from the '05. *The Jamal/Jamal mashup* Jamal's always in my heart and soul - been there for over 50 years - no reason to leave now.
  19. This myth of all Mac users saying that viruses will never happen is just that: a myth. What do you mean it's a myth? That there aren't many bloggers who say viruses will never happen to Mac users? Just upthread we have one. Any Mac vs. PC thread will inevitably have a fair number of people chiming in saying Macs are virus-prone. That is not to say ALL Mac users think that way, but enough for a chorus. Hence, it is a myth that all Mac users say that viruses will never happen. Also, I can't find the statement that you're alluding to where someone here said that viruses will never happen to Mac users?
  20. I like Jamal's playing in the above video clip, but it shows that nuance is sorely missing with the other musicians. The percussion is, to my ears, awful - it's as if someone had opened the side doors to the club and invited the Hare Krṣnas inside.
  21. Still don't understand this stance. This perception of smugness often comes from people who don't seem to perceive the idea of pride of ownership - to be so grateful for having something that you can regularly depend on. It's like buying a car that you can count on every day. Other folks might enjoy buying a less reliable car and don't mind "tinkering under the hood", so to speak. I can understand both positions, but being angry with someone who, when seeing/hearing other people who go on about their PC problems, will offer advice - to share a story of successful use or mention a way to get around a particular difficulty - is pretty unreasonable. This myth of all Mac users saying that viruses will never happen is just that: a myth. Most Mac users understand that it would be foolish to be caught off-guard on this subject and MacWorld and Mac|Life are just two magazines that tell us how to be on guard if such a thing occurs. Mac users, who frequently hear from PC owners about their computer problems - viruses, crashes, software compatibility and OS problems, etc - are either unable to help these folks directly with advice (because they almost never have these problems) or they choose to help indirectly by suggesting an alternative. When asked, (or when I see questions here), I can't make any helpful technical suggestions because the architecture of the Mac is so geared toward resisting these problems. Often, during a lunchtime/work break casual conversation, the person who's brought up their particular problems are amazed that I can't relate: "I know lots of people who are tired of [this] happening..." "This" being crashes, viruses, annoying blinking things on the desktop, and a whole bunch of other irritations. I just say that I've never had those problems. ...and this would be after owning a G4 for 8 years (2001-09) with consistent upgrades. The 23" Apple monitor that I'm looking at right now is from 2001 and it doesn't have any dead pixels - none. With this experience, I know that Macs are clearly cheaper than PCs. Your Lamborghini Murciélago might be a fun, sporty, good-looking car, but if you start complaining about your crappy gas mileage and how much money you have to put into it, I will either look at you with nothing to say or suggest that you get a Prius if you're honestly fed up with your car's gas guzzling. It seems to be the decent thing to do.

Thanks for the link. If we need a jazz connection here, Don Cherry toured with The Slits in '79 and Don brought his step-daughter Neneh along. She later joined the band.

Huge <gasp> upon seeing this news. Only 48. As of now, the cause of her death is a bit of a mystery. John Lydon said of his step-daughter that she died due to a "serious illness," but that's all that is publicly known for now. She was sweet and loads of fun. She'll be missed.
