Rediscovering one's own collection...
rostasi replied to Noj's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Yup! Audiogalaxy for a quite a while now. I forgot what I used before them, but I used it during a wonderful summer and autumn and then Apple bought them (not Lala) and I went searching desperately for an alternative. A couple of years ago, I signed up for Grooveshark, but I couldn't get my collection to connect with them - it would just stall and I never got past the first instructions. They told me it was way too large for them to deal with and then apologized. I hear that they charge a fee now. ®ø∂ --- Now playing: Edzayawa - Abonsan -

I have a feeling that the idea of carrying around your music is going out the door fast. iOS/smartphone devices of all types can get your tunes from the cloud. Beginning in '09, I stopped even taking the classic iPod with me on trips. I've borrowed a Touch (with no music) or, recently, an iPad and've accessed nearly 250,000 tunes from my home collection - sitting in a hotel room over 5000 miles away...plus you have all of those other services out there serving up tunes. ®ø∂ --- Now playing: Earl Van Dyke - The Whip-A-Rang -

I've put up with the, for me, capacity limitations, but the reality is that if I fill it with 14,000 tunes now, I would have to listen for months to get thru them all, so it's fun to just hit "autofill" every few weeks instead. That way, it's always a good cross-section and a wonderful surprise (and "re-discovery" as you say). The "identity" game is one of the games on the Classic iPod (under iQuiz -natch ) ®ø∂ --- Now playing: Burl Ives - Big Rock Candy Mountain -

Fun Previn sketch! I don't know the setups you guys have, but wouldn't it be cheaper to just remove the old and upload a new (jazz) playlist when you get tired of the old one? ®ø∂ --- Now playing: Rodney Jones - Groovebone, Part 2/Last Call (Interlude) (Medley) -

These aren't unknown to me at all - as a matter of fact, these recordings are so completely tied to my preteen years and onward that it was a nanosecond thought to go ahead and order this last week. Something to replace the LPs - sometimes multiples - and especially ICP 010 (covers without the lines drawn through the mail order segment that you see below) that was played so often in my bedroom and music practice room in the 70's that I went thru multiple copies - is a gift from the cosmo-unknown. ...and Han(d)-painted artwork at €400 is nearly worth it alone for me. When NEOS offers the same classical deal as Cedille, I'll begin considering... ®ø∂ --- Now playing: Rahsaan Roland Kirk - Triple Threat

We were in almost the identical situation that Lon's girlfriend was in. This was beginning back in October. Eighty-six (now 87) and was resistant to leaving a home that she'd been in for 50 years. In the new place, she's regularly greeted by staff and residents who have an activity level that's pretty incredible. She is so busy living life again that she doesn't find herself just sitting around thinking about what needs to be done around the house or glued to a TV set feeding her stories of fear and intimidation. The only thing that does concern me a bit about your story is the sudden two-week decline. I'm not a doctor, but it seems that he may want to get his heart rate checked if he hasn't recently. If there was a sudden slowing of the heart-rate (to, say, 50 bpm), it's possible that an insufficient amount of both blood and oxygen may be reaching the proper areas and could be causing sudden confusion. Sometimes, feet and ankle swelling could be clues too. If all that has been checked, then great! It could simply be the newness of the surroundings that have disturbed the life patterns that many of us adhere to as we get older. Time and interaction with other residents (who probably have stories of their earlier resistance as well) will keep his mind busy and more than likely return him to a happier disposition! Just hang in there - it's still a bit too soon to tell right now. Check with him regularly if you can and remind him that you care - that you didn't want to see him wasting his time alone at home with no one to share his life stories. ummm... I'm not sure how to respond to a post from someone who "skimmed," then lazily mistitled a book (and guessed a date?) from an author in which the man's name is spelled incorrectly. Anyone heard of this guy named Charlie Packer who once played with Jay McShann (or was it Thom McAn? ) and Earl Hiney. I didn't get much from it - don't see what the fuss is about. Ray Kurzweil is a visionary and a damn nice guy thinking about our future (and present) in ways that we need to be aware of (whether we like the possibilities or not). You don't have to like him, but at least try to provide a foundation less wobbly (and a bit more current) than what we've all been given here. thanks, ® --- Now playing: Lucho Bermudez y Su Orquesta Sabanera - Arroz Con Coco

'Classical' music from the last 50 years (or so)

Elliott Carter’s Music of Time ...On December 8, friends of Elliott Carter arranged for a concert at the 92nd St. Y in honor of his 103d birthday, which arrived three days later. All of the works were written in recent years, nine of them since Carter reached his century mark. The evening began with the most promising sign, a performance of a Duettino for violin and cello played by two well-known and superb performers, Rolf Schulte and Fred Sherry, who have played Carter for many decades, and continued with a new piece for solo violin. This was followed by a world premiere of a string trio written this year. The program notes by John Link claim that Carter tries in this piece to give an unaccustomed leading role to the viola and writes revealingly that “as in much of Carter’s recent music, the line between dispute and shared expression is ambiguous,” but this was already true of the treatment of the viola in Carter’s second string quartet of more than a half century ago. Nevertheless, the new string trio is a dramatic and satisfying work. Some even grander works appeared later in the program..." ®ø∂ --- Now playing: Marva Broome & The Art Ensemble of Chicago - For All We Know -

The "Klub Płytowy" that you see on the bottom refers to the record club of the PSJ (Polskie Stowarzyszenie Jazzowe). The covers were the same with track info provided on the inner sleeves. If you somehow have a record with a generic sleeve you may be able to check the record number against this list here: http://www.discogs.com/label/Poljazz To add to the confusion, some of these titles came out on the Pronit label too. ® --- Now playing: Marks Mankwane & His Alto Sax - Khupa Marama No. 2

I haven't posted here since 2010, but I have to say that this is the best first post ever! Major applause for you Tom! (and I totally agree with your assessment of this tune). ®ø∂ -
URGH!: A Music War Finally out on DVD! My brother-in-law worries about holiday gifts for me, but he got it right this year. Didn't know that this was released. Haven't seen this in nearly 30 years. After it's official big screen release, it was frequently a midnight movie event at many theaters later. Now if they would only release "Dance Craze!"

Yea! for Donald and anybody who loves him. The Germans too have a love for D.D. and books on him are one of the best ways to learn German (and Dutch too!) Around this house, two unsung heroes - Donald Duck and Chococat - are very well-represented.
