  1. I like Barbapapa, but I'm probably not old enuf for it.
  2. Another fun series is Easy Tempo, but if yer just into the covers, well...
  3. I've got the complete series on CD. I don't know if they exist on vinyl. I'm sure "da bastids" have at least some of these titles?
  4. Oh yeah!... but, you know, I'm using the term a bit broadly - current musical climate, etc...
  5. Well, not all of it is actually as erotic as the covers lead one to think. Come to think of it - I've actually shared some of this music (with covers) with both male and female friends who seem to enjoy it's kitsch aspect.
  6. That series is quite fun, cheap, and a guilty pleasure. Have had many delightful reactions from listeners.
  7. Is that with or without his Octopussycats?
  8. I love diversity and thrive on doing multiple things at once. I get my most creative ideas that way. I think that if someone young can't remember particular groups or songs they were listening to a month ago, it tells me more about the quality of the music and possibly too about how important (or not) music is to some folks. Music as a hip commodity? It's been that way for ages. If something is strikingly good enough, it'll resonate and one can just repeat it over and over... If that's what it takes to memorize a lyric or an instrumental goody, then it's not fundamentally different than thirty years ago, except that one had to listen to something repeatedly because one could only afford just so many LPs. I'll take quantity - huge quantity - and let my mind jump into high gear when the sound becomes heavenly.
  9. I was thinking this as well. There is a quote from Cage that comes from these discussions: "If you act in the field of sounds unintentionally there is no concern about the beginning, middle, or ending, and that process resembles our environment."
  10. Here's one of those treats that I've heard about for a long time, but never knew if it really existed. This one, and his famous appearance on an Italian TV quiz show. What makes this so unusual is that they decided to CANCEL the game part of the show and just let Cage perform! Had this ever been done before - re-arranging a set of TV game show rules in order to accommodate a guest? Also, when you click on the link, you'll see two more links to a famous appearance of Frank Zappa on "The Steve Allen Show." You'll see a very young and clean-shaven Zappa perform music on a bicycle! I've seen the Zappa performance several times, but the Cage performance is one that I've always heard about but nobody I know has ever seen it! http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2007/04/john_cage_on_a_.html
  11. What's his name? Should I know him? That's the now departed Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy.
  12. The DVD that Lades is mentioning (I think) has Darn That Dream followed by "Ahmad's Blues" and then the camera does a slow pan over to the ensemble that you mentioned. They do Chelsea Bridge and Duke's Place.
  13. Quote: "He remained in demand for Halloween performances, including a memorable 1973 show where his bus broke down outside Frankenstein, Missouri."
  14. What a shame... Out comes the Shostakovich...
  15. Thanks, it was originally billed as a half-hour performance after I agreed to an hour. Then, they asked me if I was free to extend the performance, so I did - to three hours. Yeah, it's a wonderful disc. Those tunings were the source of the Helsinki gallery piece that went thru various transformations. I still haven't got it yet. I'm hoping that it'll be this weekend. Haven't taken the time, but I've already convinced a couple of other people to pick it up.
  16. Didja know that Leon Russell played piano on that tune? 'Monster Mash' Hit Creator Dies At 69 Skip directly to the full story. The Associated Press Published: Apr 27, 2007 NEW YORK - Bobby "Boris" Pickett, 69, whose dead-on Boris Karloff impression propelled the Halloween anthem "Monster Mash" to the top of the charts in 1962, making him one of pop music's most enduring one-hit wonders, died of leukemia Wednesday in Los Angeles. "Monster Mash" hit the Billboard chart three times: when it debuted in 1962, reaching No. 1 the week before Halloween; again in August 1970, and for a third time in May 1973. The resurrections were appropriate for a song where Pickett gravely intoned the forever-stuck-in-your-head chorus: "He did the Monster Mash. ... It was a graveyard smash." The hit single ensured Pickett's place in the pantheon of pop music obscurities, said syndicated radio host Dr. Demento, whose long-running program celebrates offbeat tunes. "It's certainly the biggest Halloween song of all time," Demento said. The DJ, who interviewed Pickett last year, said he maintained a sense of humor about his singular success: "As he loved to say at oldies shows, 'And now I'm going to do a medley of my hit.'" The instant smash became a sort-of Halloween carol. In a 1996 interview with People magazine, Pickett said he never grew tired of it: "When I hear it, I hear a cash register ringing." Sing along everybody: I was working in the lab late one night When my eyes beheld an eerie sight For my monster from his slab began to rise And suddenly to my surprise He did the mash He did the monster mash The monster mash It was a graveyard smash He did the mash It caught on in a flash He did the mash He did the monster mash From my laboratory in the castle east To the master bedroom where the vampires feast The ghouls all came from their humble abodes To get a jolt from my electrodes They did the mash They did the monster mash The monster mash It was a graveyard smash They did the mash It caught on in a flash They did the mash They did the monster mash The zombies were having fun The party had just begun The guests included Wolf Man Dracula and his son The scene was rockin', all were digging the sounds Igor on chains, backed by his baying hounds The coffin-bangers were about to arrive With their vocal group, "The Crypt-Kicker Five" They played the mash They played the monster mash The monster mash It was a graveyard smash They played the mash It caught on in a flash They played the mash They played the monster mash Out from his coffin, Drac's voice did ring Seems he was troubled by just one thing He opened the lid and shook his fist And said, "Whatever happened to my Transylvania twist?" It's now the mash It's now the monster mash The monster mash And it's a graveyard smash It's now the mash It's caught on in a flash It's now the mash It's now the monster mash Now everything's cool, Drac's a part of the band And my monster mash is the hit of the land For you, the living, this mash was meant too When you get to my door, tell them Boris sent you Then you can mash Then you can monster mash The monster mash And do my graveyard smash Then you can mash You'll catch on in a flash Then you can mash Then you can monster mash
  17. Yeah, I'm wondering a bit about this too. I don't think this is the same as Jamal's own Ahmad's Blues, but I'm gonna have to hunt down the recording to really compare. He does do Sweet and Lovely on Alhambra tho. Anyway, those who don't have the video, I've uploaded the audio portion here. Rod
  18. One of the things that I began doing while transferring stuff to an HD (1TB) was to take anything that wasn't already on a disc and place it in a playlist called "Orphans." Then, when I got around 4 GB's worth, I'd burn just that playlist to a DVD (calling it, for example, "Orphans: 070425"). I'm still a bit nervous about the HD saving part, but, so far, it's been pretty reliable (and there's a backup HD). I'm in "tryout" mode now and I figure that beginning this fall, I'll probably make the complete switchover and begin selling off more of the discs and LPs after transfers have been made. Rod
  19. http://www.kenrockwell.com/apple/itunes.htm This article smells funny to me. I wonder if this guy has ever tried listening to solo piano music at 128 kbps (BTW, it is kbps Ken). R (Also, there's more to the article than was reproduced here - kinda like 128kbps bitrates )
  20. Great! Not sure what I'm gonna do here. I'll check a couple of possibilities in the morning as well. I love the tambura too! Here's a short excerpt from a long performance of mine that used multi-tracked tamburas: Helsinki - March 31, 2007
