  1. http://www.kenrockwell.com/apple/itunes.htm This article smells funny to me. I wonder if this guy has ever tried listening to solo piano music at 128 kbps (BTW, it is kbps Ken). R (Also, there's more to the article than was reproduced here - kinda like 128kbps bitrates )
  2. Great! Not sure what I'm gonna do here. I'll check a couple of possibilities in the morning as well. I love the tambura too! Here's a short excerpt from a long performance of mine that used multi-tracked tamburas: Helsinki - March 31, 2007

  4. Call 'em up at Other Music and see if it's in stock. If you've got the Riley "jones", apparently you can download it for $9.99. R~~
  5. I'm really excited about being able to replace LPs of Les Yeux Fermes and Lifespan with wonderfully clear (<cross-fingers>) CD sound. These albums helped me thru stressful times in high school. I hope TR decides to bring this Yamaha organ out of storage for new works - lovely sound. Other Music has decided to modernize and offer digital downloads - plus they're offering long(ish) samples of each cut from new releases. The Riley is one of them. R~~
  6. The Epson R800 here is still going strong. I gotta have the disc printing option. Tried the ink knockoffs until the time came when I was having a major problem reproducing a photo that was going to be used in a church for a funeral. Running the automatic head-cleaning didn't do anything to help and, fortunately, I didn't have to get in there and monkey around with cleaning it. Just changed out a couple of "offending" cartridges with the real deal and it has worked great ever since. I've read that HP is the costliest when it comes to ink price per page.
  7. I'm guessing it's Takeshi Terauchi!
  8. • Hail Ceasar!
  9. As usual, Jim's the sane voice of reason.
  10. So I have to be a girl and have kids? The fact that she's a daughter somehow makes this more of a serious issue? Wow, a strangely invidious, sexist attitude methinks. Again, (I know you're reading right over this): He was pissed at his daughter. He yelled at her. That's it. We know nothing more about what she did. Frankly, it's none of our business. If, in this instance, she was a manipulative little 12 year old, then she probably needed more than the coddling I see parents usually give. I guess he's not in a position to ground her. Maybe he's tried diplomacy? Hell, we know NOTHING about this. ...and we can thank the "Sun"/"Enquirer"- like tactics to bring it to our unfortunate attention. R~~
  11. Yes, I heard it twice already at the site. Arguments like this happen all over the world. So he's pissed! Maybe he's got a reason? Man, when my dad talked to me that way, I KNEW I'd better straighten out my act! Maybe I should've had the media and Child Protective Services rushing to my side!
  12. I think you're overreacting BIG time. Kids can be real shits sometimes and we have no idea what the story is. Typical media overreaction to a famous person who's supposed to have a neat little societal place assigned to him in life. A father yelling at his daughter results in future therapy? Man, you gotta quit watching TV.
  13. So what? Maybe she was a thoughtless little pig. Seems judgment is being passed on something we know nothing about. OH, that's right. He's a liberal - gotcha! R~~
  14. ...and he's averaging 6m:45s/track
  15. The fact that he should actually have more than a years worth of tunes (more than TWO!) and still take up less than a TB of space raised a red flag, so I wanted to check his average bitrate. Using his numbers (849GB/809 days), his average bitrate for each tune is surprisingly low for a jazz aficionado - just under 102kbps? What's the deal with that? I kinda like the idea of 1TB = 1 year being a pretty good goal to strive for. This comes out to about an average of 272kbps/track. ...and just jazz and showtunes - whew... R~~
  16. Short obit for our English-speaking friends: * Famous Polish jazzman dies * 13.04.2007 Andrzej Kurylewicz, the famous Polish jazz and avant-garde composer, pianist and trumpeter, has died at the age of 75. Kurylewicz is considered one of the pioneers of jazz music in Poland during the Stalinist era of the 1950s. He was even relegated from the Krakow Conservatory for promoting this then outlawed musical trend. Andrzej Kurylewicz was the founder and leader of numerous jazz ensembles during the ‘Sixties. In 1969 he made his debut as a film music composer. Throughout the following decade he concentrated on avant-garde composition with his famous String Quartet performing at the acclaimed Warsaw Autumn Festival of Contemporary music. http://www.polskieradio.pl/zagranica/dokument.aspx?iid=51000
  17. Good to hear this. Anyone else see the irony in that the only other jazz artist to win a Pulitzer was Wynnie? ±R~~
  18. So, iTunes is more accurate. Toast has been able to burn to internal drives for many years now. Possibly as far back as Toast 4 Deluxe. Now, we're at Toast 8. The advantage of Toast is that it'll create a Red Book compliant disc if you're in need of such a thing. R~~
  19. I've only found a Polish language obit, but you can read this bio until an English language obit is posted. Also, here's a link to one of his LPs: http://www.polishjazz.com/pjs/1.htm ANDRZEJ KURYLEWICZ - composer, pianist, trumpet-player, trombonist. Born in Lvov, 1932. His musical education began in the Music School (Szkoła Muzyczna) in Lvov and in the Institute of Music (Instytut Muzyczny) in Gliwice. He went on to study in the High School of Music (Wyższa Szkoła Muzyczna) in Kraków - piano under Henryk Sztompka, composition under Stanisław Wiechowicz. He made his debut as the founder of the Polish Radio Jazz Band (Zespół Jazzowy Polskiego Radia) in Kraków. He conducted the Polish Radio and Television Orchestra in Warsaw. In 1969 he founded the Formation of Contemporary Music (Formacja Muzyki Współczesnej - strings, brass and percussion), which he led till 1979. In 1967, in Warsaw’s Old Town, with his wife Wanda Warska - a singer and painter – he opened "Piwnica Artystyczna Kurylewiczów" – a studio for the performance of musical and literary forms, distinct and combined. Andrzej Kurylewicz is one of the most outstanding personalities in contemporary Polish music. He is a passionate artist, who has changed several times the field of his interests and activities. He has given concerts - both as a conductor and instrumentalist - throughout Europe, as well as South and North America. In 1965 he received the Polish Radio and Television Award; in 1978, the Award of the City of Warsaw; in 1981, the Prix Italia; in 1987, the Medal of the City of Warsaw. He has also received many prizes for his compositions for film and theatre. In 1984 he took up the position of composer-in-residence of the city of Wilhelmshaven. Throughout the late 80’s and early 90’s, he maintained a close association with the State University in Kansas (USA). As a composer, he belongs - as he himself has put it – to the "post-avant-garde" of the late 20th century. He has composed numerous pieces for symphonic orchestra, for chamber orchestra, as well as many song-cycles, psalms for Latin texts, a "Missa Brevis" for the Roman Missal, and a wide range of solo works, for piano, harpsichord, organ, flute, tuba, double-bass, and others. As a pianist, Andrzej Kurylewicz values highly the music of Karol Szymanowski, offering particularly outstanding interpretations of all twenty-two of that composer’s Mazurkas. In his improvisations on the piano, he has been particularly innovative in combining classical and contemporary music with jazz.
