  1. Two things about this... First, you'll see that Crumar Mainman is sometimes listed as a human performer on recordings and/or in reviews - funny thing actually. Second, I think we may have a case of "Chinese Telephone" here. Somewhere along the way - either Ra his bad-self or someone down the line referred to this keyboard of his as a Crumar Mainman when in actuality it's probably the Crumar Multiman. This may explain the difficulty of finding such a thing.

DANG! You can find just about everything on this here internets! To Simon's chagrin, I actually found the cover and a page from that exercise book that I couldn't remember the name of earlier. It seems that it's the 2 mallet version, so I can't remember what the 4 mallet books were that I had, but anyways....

Then, that's what you should use if that gives you the sound that you want. It's no weakness. As time goes on, you may want to expand... first, a little...and then maybe later you'll want to go even further...or you may find your "sound" early on and just stick with it. It's all experimenting - and you shouldn't stop (unless you lose interest, of course).

I hear these kind of comments often with all sorts of music and art, and without going into paragraphs on the positive aspects of being informed about what is going thru your senses and the sheer delight in knowledge attainment, let me just say, simply: It helps to know these things when you hear or look at something and you have to say, "HEY! What the f**k was that??!! "How does Pharaoh get that sound?" "I get a different feeling listening to Miles than I do listening to Wynton - why is that?" "Why is it that I hear two or three vibist and there is only one playing?" etc... Here's Burton at his finest - just by himself - and tell me that you don't have at least some curiosity about what he's doing and how he's doing it. This is why "impossible's" comment about Burton's mastery of 4 mallet technique stands: Chega de Saudade

In the early 70's, I played horn and percussion. I came home from school one day and my dad had sold my alto. Said I wasn't practicing enough - tho it was more like that he hated the music I was into. Anyway, I had 4 percussion teachers. The Burton lessons were private over a period of about 4 years, but not very many of them and at erratic intervals - which was common for me because I had a rather "unstable" way of life in those days that kept me from staying very long with any one of the 4 teachers. There was some overlap of course, but they all had very busy traveling/performing schedules and so it was always tricky trying to make things work. I mentioned that it was his way, but he was rather kind and gentle about it all and I think he may have been happy or surprised that I wanted the full four-mallet treatment. Textbook lessons really - I think one I liked was something like "Modern School for Vibes" or something like that - it's been 35 years or so, so maybe if I saw the cover. Etudes and stuff like that. It's funny, after some of the Burton lessons, I'd just walk to a house next door (now a restaurant, but not much changed) and sit and play tabla with a bunch of people. The sessions were always lead by a fellow named "Kumar" who became popular for plate-spinning on the Ed Sullivan show (and probably other shows as well).

I've found the there's more of a reliance on the areas around the lower knuckles for quick changes and power with the Burton grip. I never learned the Musser grip, because he was my first and only vibe teacher and we started out right away with four-mallet technique - his way! (roll-roll-roll...hop - roll-roll-roll...hop)

Yup, Harry Blazer's on the New Quartet recording. In the 70's, I once had a hairy blazer, but that's another story...

Nice guy and patient teacher. Some early favs: w/Goodrick and Laboriel. Always thought that the drumming was a bit lackluster on this, but, hey, it's ECM: of course, a classic that still holds up: Nice duet album with the both of them switching around on different instruments: Great stuff here that, at one moment swings, another moment is achingly beautiful, etc: Amazing solo LP that'll leave yer jaw in dropped position. The version of Chega de Saudade is worth it alone. Countrified! Chet Atkins and Buddy Spicher are on this. Would've liked more Buddy Emmons tho, but still a real fun one! there are a few more out there worth having.

  12. Well, it's a bit in jest. Those koto and close-miked near whispered Ashby recitations and the stumble-funk mixed with strings that kinda swoon and quarter-tone put it in that heady bag of exoticisms that may have compelled yer ultra-hipster to sit back with some sticky-icky-icky. Happy first day of stoner summer everybody!! ®ø∂
  13. Oh, great to see this on disc! Great album meant for those on drugs -
  14. I'm amazed at how bright these new bulbs are. Too bright in some situations. I found that my eyes would twitch and sometimes burn while reading in the front room. But, I have to say, they have lasted many years now. I especially like the lasting quality of the ones that go in hard-to-get places or areas that can be a pain to get at - those were the places to change the bulbs first. There was a time when the new blueish bulbs were tried, but those were pretty weak on lumens.
  15. I don't what this means. I've found a specific performance disturbing to the point where I was expected to return to witness it played again, but I refused (and went and had ice cream instead - much better choice methinks). There's also a composer who's music I find absolutely amazing, but I'd never want to witness the full event of any of it's performances. ...but finding music "difficult"? I don't know...
  16. Lots o' Cannonball on 8-Track in the day! Wore out multiple copies of 74 Miles Away!
  17. Doesn't hurt to ask. I've got a few pre-recorded mini-discs - including Branford's I Heard You Twice the First Time {Sony}, but can't recall if any of them are Blue Note titles. I don't think so. Curious as to why you'd be looking for them tho.
  18. Man, you should see how small the place is where he and Nora Barnacle lived in Dublin! The following pictures are the actual location of the beginning of the book with Buck Mulligan and Stephen Dedalus (inside the tower):
  19. Ulysses has long had a special place in my heart. I've read it and Finnegan's Wake many times. You can get audio book recordings of both now, and the "Great Courses" series of CDs has a wonderful set that's devoted to Ulysses. To take the tour thru Dublin and it's environs is something every lover of this literature should do before leaving the planet. The 100th anniversary celebrations were a blast and a really surreal event: a few pix from the Bloomsday 100th in Dublin Rod
  20. I don't know if we have a topic on this yet, but... sometimes we come across interesting uses of Flash on websites and this may be a nice place to post them. Not all of them are necessarily good uses and some could be downright irritating and have no practical use at all but still one can wonder at how and sometimes why particular site owners use Flash in their particular ways. I came across this one today - not much beyond the homepage, but funny and creative nonetheless. Watch what happens once it reaches the borders of your screenspace! Try dragging it outside the borders and it finds it's way back! http://www.lebonze.co.uk/stuff/move.htm
  21. Howzabout that avatar pic you got there?
  22. Yeah, squirrels! Sharon made a chair for them to sit in while they eat their corn. and one youngster likes to come up to my window and peer in.
  23. Sorry, one of the few times that I've linked from someone else's site. I hope that it's fixed above.
