In the old days, jazz students from around the world would sometimes sell their precious cargo there and you'd find some great stuff! Maybe this is the same with CDs now?

The NW Hwy location is just down the street and I've found lots of good (and cheeeeeeep!) stuff. You can easily get lost in there. Recycled Books in the square in Denton was a good place too, but it's been a while since I've been.

Bossa is a rhythm...and it's also a feel. If you stick with the older traditional bossa of the late 50's/early 60's, with a rediscovery for young folks who weren't even around during that time, then you have them listening to a deep (read: established or roots) bossa. To extend that side to side bossa style into something that adds even more grace and space (either physically in using less instrumentation or musically thru even slower sensuality), then you've got an extended form. After all, bossa is an open term anyway in Brazil.

Well, if it leads to an "intellectual" understanding of something w/o a concurrent "emotional feel" for it (or vice-versa), then that's sort of a dead end.For me, getting to the real meaning of something automatically creates the emotion and with those two tied together I can walk thru life a little more, if not confident, then surely alive. As one gets older, it seems that it's easy to fall back on the overconfident, set, been there-done that attitude coupled with the, self-imposed I think, attitude of being too old for anything new. Music and it's varied manifestations are one way to explore your way out of that tangled mesh. I'm happy to hear that you're making new discoveries that're not just some foreign flying machines sitting in an abandoned field, but are extensions of what's gone before that have embellishments leaving room for future growth. The feel of something that connects in a refreshing way is a sure-fire way of feeling young(er).

You may want to check for some samples of the Moon Bossa disc. Khari Simmons was a bass player with India Arie, but that's all I can say about him. Imagine Sergio Mendes style that mixes a little modern soul with just a tinge of light hip-hop. Deep Brazilian has been really heavy in Japan for a long time - played a lot in coffee shops - so maybe this is the P-Vine connection here.

In the 80's, I introduced a friend to a lot of experimental music based labels that he grew to love. A few years later, he became a buyer for a local Borders store. After many months of frustration in dealing with management types telling him what to order and not, he quit. I came in one day after he'd been gone for a few weeks and noticed an incredible sale on a bunch of stuff that I was sure came from North Country - Hat Arts, FMPs, et al. at $5.99! When I got to the front counter to pay for my large stash of goodies, this good-ol'-boy in a big western hat behind the counter said, "Well, it's about time someone was buyin' that crap!" I said, "Oh?" He then went into a tirade about this "jazz idiot" they had hired who bought all of "this useless crap."

Nuh, uh! I like mine juicy, wet, an' nachral!

Well, the late Richard Bock basically changed the label Pacific Jazz to World Pacific in the late 50's if I remember correctly and later started a cassette-only label called Ravi Shankar Music Circle that not only featured Shankar, but also a wonderful eclectic group of both Hindustani and Carnatic musicians. I believe some of the titles are now available as CDs. I bought this whole series in the 80's. Here's a sample:

I was there again today. Now, there's nobody working downstairs [the jazz, classical, (non-rock) area of the store]. This used to be the case during the night hours, but, today, it was smack dab in the middle of a Friday afternoon. They just stuck on some Les Miserables to serenade whomever and closed the counter.

My two cents: A couple of days ago when the Evans box was up on their site, I ordered it. Today, I got an email telling me that the set is no longer in print and that my CC won't be charged. My guess about most everyone's order is that if the Coltrane were truly not in their stock, then you would've heard something by now. Maybe yes, maybe no, but this is just what happened to me. I think that they're swamped. Probably good idea to chill, listen to some stuff that you haven't gotten to yet and expect your order probably 3 to 4 weeks after you'd ordered it. It'll be a wonderful surprise when it shows up at your door.

Indeed, I wonder how long it'll take them to release this stuff (hopefully in unedited, un-overdubbed form).Don't have it handy now, but I seem to remember that the American version released it with two tracks (sides 1 and 2) Am I remembering this correctly? Patrick's comment about being an 8th grader - I remember this time well when a classmate named Scott borrowed Om and Kulu Se Mama from me and I had a hell of a time getting it back from him. I suppose it just goes to show that Om may just be a love it/hate it recording.
