  1. I have to say that I wasn't talking to the classical/jazz guy himself - they are never there at night. This was just a guy who just happened to be downstairs straightening up things. It used to be nice checking out those 4 or 5 rows of new things, but in the last 9 months or so, I've noticed that they would put older discs in there for filler and then they began putting new classical DVDs in the same space. When I paid, I casually asked if they'd be open tonight to midnight and another fellow said that they'd be open even later due to their policy of providing early Tuesday new releases. I'm surprised that they're still getting those based on what I've read so far. Late start-early closing last night, so I'm probably going back tonight.
  2. That Wilson's got Caliman, Hutcherson and Pass doesn't it? If it's what I'm thinking, then it's not great, but certainly above average. Also: kinda partial to the Discovery and Trend titles myself.
  3. • Femi Kuti • Demi Moore • Dori Caymmi
  4. Went tonight to Tower. They used to have a separate section in the downstairs devoted to new releases in classical. Not any more! When I asked about it, the fellow said that the summer was slow for new releases and that the "new" section was probably discontinued because of that. uh, huh.
  5. • Pacific Gas & Electric • Patty Waters • The Telefones
  6. Maybe we need to send these two threads on to them
  7. MS has poor taste (or she's just searchin' for a mood). Actually, I don't mind the Beneke version, but, then again, I can listen to Tiny Tim's Christmas album
  8. Is it the Thornhill tune? If so, why not use that instead? Yup, but I betcha ol' Martha and her muffins got back from Echo Beach and reached for her copy of Jingle Bell Swing and said, I do think that I liketh this Glenn Miller Orchestra man and...you know...everyone knows old Glenn-boy and it just wouldn't be - eh, hem - proper to have someone with such an uncouth name such as Thornwillie or whachever ya call it. ...and, you know - Claude?
  9. I want a program called Chewy's World.
  10. http://www.craigslist.org/about/best/nyc/179331455.html Date: 2006-07-07, 11:11AM EDT Dear Transvestite Sitting On My Stoop, It was so nice to see you last night! To see a warm smiling, deer-in-the-headlights face looking up at me from my one step stoop as I staggered back to my building after an exhausting day of doctor's appointments and other various emotionally draining activities was simply a pure joy. And then! You gave me the gift that I never could have hoped to receive! From beneath your oh-so-fashionable mini jean skirt, what did I see? Oh! Could that be?? Your penis?!?! Why, yes, yes it was! Oh, and were you sitting on my step, my lucky lucky step and using it as a toilet? YOU WERE! How wonderful! My, you really did have to go, didn't you? You just couldn't stop yourself could you? I mean, really, I understand, I often feel the need to sit in the middle of one of the busiest streets in the whole fucking city and use it for my own toilet. I regularly just sit down whenever the mood strikes and let 'er rip. I can understand that a trash can or sewer wasn't good enough, really. And I know that even though the Hudson River is just a few hundred feet away, my stoop was obviously the MOST perfect place for you to take that 5 minute leak. Yes, I understand, you couldn't risk your oh-so-fashionable outfit getting mussed in any way by walking down to the water, or anyplace that wasn't my stoop, really. I can't blame you, it is engineered just perfectly to double as a toilet. Maybe I'll try it some time myself. Thanks for the idea! I hope you don't mind! And while I'm at it, Transvestite Sitting On My Stoop, I'd like to thank you for whispering to me about how you have a weak bladder as I was trying to desperately to get into my building without stepping into the huge puddle of piss growing at my feet, and simultaneously begging me for five dollars and pleading with me not to call the cops. Your dulcet tones so close to my ear, well, they sent shivers down my spine. It was an expereince unlike any other I've had yet living in this city. And also, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for showing me your penis so completely, it's all I see when I close my eyes now, with its full stream of urine falling like a little sterile waterfall upon the sidewalk, I surely will be having dreams about it for weeks. Thank you so much, Transvestite Sitting On My Stoop, really, I hope we meet again soon. With all my love and devotion, Em.
  11. Yup, that Beneke shows up now and then on Xmas comps.
  12. Oh yes! and I've said this before...let's say that you want to buy a new Morton Feldman or John Cage disc on Mode records. They price them at $18.99 for single discs and $35.99 for doubles (!!??) which is way more than the $14.99 list for single discs from Mode itself. This is what keeps me from buying most CDs there... and I agree with Jeffrey about the occasional sale. Rod
  13. Yup...going there has involved a late night ritual for me. Usually a trip out to the Cosmic Cafe for a late dinner, then 'round the corner for a late night peek at what's come out. Love going there late at night with the basement nearly all to myself. Actually, the magazines are the big draw for me, since many of the book stores stopped carrying lots of stuff. Haven't been in a while...so tomorrow night it is! R~~
  14. As you say...same series. here's another example of the kind of covers they'd do:
  15. Yup, that's a Stash records release. There's quite a few "themed" ones that they put out. I'll find the boxset and post you a pic... Rod
  16. Afro-Classic was played a lot at our house 'cause I was spending so much time trying to duplicate Dave Friedman's playing!
  17. uhhh, the one down the street on Northwest Hwy?
  18. Well Al, They are pretty much CTI fare, but Sebesky is on board and not Creed. The Desmond has a nice variety of styles for a stab at S&G songs, if you don't mind the source of the tunes. I used to love the Laws LP and played it constantly. The Bach Passacaglia being a favorite, but as in all of the CTIs of this nature, if you're OK with soft (but intelligent, I think) versions, then I'd say go for it. Rod
  19. You wanna listen? I take requests - Rod listen

    Freddy Fender

Fender Freddy Fender has incurable cancer Thu Aug 3, 12:16 PM ET Musician Freddy Fender has incurable cancer, discovered after tumors were found on his lungs, and his wife said they are "hoping for a miracle." "I feel very comfortable in my life," Fender told the Corpus Christi Caller-Times for a story published Wednesday. "I'm one year away from 70 and I've had a good run. I really believe I'm OK. In my mind and in my heart, I feel OK. I cannot complain that I haven't lived long enough, but I'd like to live longer." Fender started his career in the late 1950s and hit the charts with "Before The Next Teardrop Falls," "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" and "You'll Lose A Good Thing." He has won three Grammy Awards, the most recent in 2002. He was to have surgery in early January to remove the upper left lobe of his lung because of a fungal infection, but surgeons found two large tumors and left the lobe intact. Fender underwent chemotherapy in late January but stopped because of its side effects. A scan later found nine more tumors. He was resting at his home in Corpus Christi, said Vangie Huerta, his wife and manager, adding that she did not ask doctors to estimate how long he might live. Fender, who has canceled all performances, has decided to resume chemotherapy at a lower dosage. "We can prolong his life with medication or chemo, but it's not a cure," his wife said. Fender received a kidney from his daughter in 2002 and a liver transplant in 2004. He has had problems with diabetes and hepatitis C. ___ On the Net: Freddy Fender: http://www.freddyfender.com/
