new box set on Oscar Peterson Songbooks???
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm thinking that Cuscuna was involved since the Mosaic set came out recently... In digging through the vaults he must have known that this other material was there (and presumably in good condition).... so that's why I'm thinking there's probably little if any (I HOPE) duplication between the upcoming set and the Mosaic... I wonder how many CD's it will be??? My guess is probably 5.. maybe 4??? Wonder if there'll be any previously unissued stuff???? -
new box set on Oscar Peterson Songbooks???
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm hoping you're right... At less than $40 this would be quite the coup... if it is this... It would be VERY COOL... to have nearly all the OP from 1951-53!!!!!! -
just saw this on Tower.com.... http://www.tower.com/songbooks-oscar-peter.../wapi/113497240 Anybody got any info or ideas? :excited: Will this replicate the Mosaic set at all? (My instinct is that it won't since it's being put out by Verve and Cuscuna might have been involved).. How many cds? thanks

The difference between the DVD and the CD... is that the DVD has the songs in a different order with longer versions played in front of a studio audience... She had a CD/DVD release on her last record "Live." I like the format personally and wish more artists would do it... It doesn't raise the cost of the purchase that much....

Listening to Disc 1 of the Lionel Hampton set in my car... I'm liking it a lot... Not too much talk on the board about this one... -
that's an understatement... She's hot!!!

Don't get me wrong... I do like her... I just wish she would really stretch out sometimes....

Go See it!!!! It was fabulous!!!!! I went to the 11am matinee which was half full and everyone was clapping at the end! It was great! :excited: :excited:

This is her first record without her old trio... It's a quartet record with Randy Brecker on trumpet, George Mraz on bass and Anthony Pinciotti on drums.. Overall it was good... not great... I have always liked her stuff... I think I figured out my issue.... She always plays with a little restraint....Most of the tunes she plays(and composes) or have a medium tempo (not fast, not slow) or are ballads... Don't get me wrong... I've seen her perform 2 or 3 times and I have all of her recordings... and overall I do think she's a very good piano player and an excellent composer... It's just that I've never seen her (or heard her) play in a very fast or unrestrained manner.... The new record is a CD with a live DVD performance along with some interviews from the band....

I just got this today.. and I'm watching the DVD studio performance.. I'm not sure how I feel about this yet... I think I like it but....

Morgan/Shorter and Chambers/Kelly Vee Jays
tranemonk replied to DrJ's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
years ago I managed to get all the Lee Morgan stuff on two Vee-Jay Discs (Expoobident and Here's Lee Morgan)... published by Blue Moon 1997... as I'm not a big Wayne Shorter fan... I skipped this Mosaic... -
thanks Swede... Just put in a pre-order in for the Oscar Peterson... No. Oscar Peterson Plays The Jerome Kern Song Book was recorded in 1959. You are thinking of Oscar Peterson Plays Jerome Kern which was recorded in 1952-53. However, be advised that even this album isn't complete on the Mosaic set. They left out one track because it has Herb Ellis on guitar instead of Barney Kessel. Similarly the Richard Rodgers and Vincent Youmans albums are incomplete for the same reason. I think this was a bad decision on Mosaic's part. Completing the December 1953 trio output would have made those three albums complete, and those few extra tracks might very well have fitted on the same number of CDs. Now, if Mosaic is planning a second box covering the Herb Ellis recordings the situation will be remedied eventually, but if not, I think it is unfortunate that those albums are left incomplete when just a few extra tracks could have completed them. The complete 1951-54 "songbooks" (not part of the album titles) have however been reissued on CD on an Avid set, so one can get the missing material there, but it will be remastered from LPs then instead.

I'm assuming the Peterson is the same material as on the Mosaic set, right??? And what's the scoop with the Grover and Crusaders records?? Any good?

there's also an excellent consistency to this set... With 80% of my Mosaics (esp. sets with 6 or more discs) I tend to feel like they could've left some stuff in the can... But this whole package is outstanding...! -
