  1. I've got the first 3 and you are right... They are excellent... :excited: As much as I like Cdbaby and will continue purchasing there... In general their prices are high (the previous Pepper releases were fine).... I wonder what the cost of this set will be??? My guess is $40-50... In any case... I'm there the day it comes out...
  2. Oh yeah.. I kinda forgot about that one too.... Hmmmm......
  3. nope... sorry Artie Shaw? Any idea what the proposed set would cover?
  4. Artie Shaw boxed set out later this year.... that's all I know...
  5. That is a GREAT photo!!! If I had to pick a few.... I'd probably recommend the Live at the Blue Note boxed set available on Telarc... It's 4 cd's you can probably get for under $30....
  6. so assuming you're right... Are we still in mystery land as to what exactly this set is????
  7. I'm actually beginning to think that is the one.... Well it sure as heck isn't this one then...
  8. Digging Tal Farlow Discs 3 and 4 while trying to get some work done inside...
  9. If I had 2 cents.. I'd suggest considering.... the Tal Farlow since it's heading OOP and if you didn't want to spend that much cash... (Although most of us will tell you it's worth it... I'd vote for the Bobby Hutcherson Select.. My favorite Select... Welcome aboard...
  10. Now that I'm finished with the Hampton... I've got this one going in the car... Disc 1 Yaye! Me too! (Although I've also been listening to the Peggy Lee parts.)
  11. I assume the Bluebird is long gone and OOP????
  12. okay.. I just finished listening to the Lionel Hampton set and here's is what I think... I really liked it.. far more than I expected to....I was very pleasantly surprised by Hamp's vocals.. I'm not a big fan of Pre WWIII jazz but this set worked for me... Almost every tune swung... Only one (I think) version of Flying Home... (I was afraid there would be 5 different takes and 3 alternates... <_< ). What's also interesting about this set.... is who is on it...It's got Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams, Chu Berry, Ben Webster, Charlie Christian among others.... Another thing that pleasantly surprised me was that most of the sessions are small group sessions not big band... (I prefer small group settings.) Disc 5 was the weakest of the bunch with more poppish tunes and background vocals... The background vocals are IMHO what doomed the Dinah Washington Roulette set... but in this case... they seem to be only on the fifth disc... Overall I was very impressed... This is causing me to reconsider the Chu Berry... Highly recommended if you like this genre... (Or as in my case.. want to get a better taste of it..) The thing I find confusing... is that there seems to be NO discussion of this set on this board... Given the interest in the Chu Berry, Goodman, etc... What's up with the lack of love for Hamp???
  13. Art Pepper Select Discs 1 and 2
  14. Just got it today... and I'm almost finished and it's excellent!!!! I could do without the 1970s disco cover - though....
  15. I'm on Disc 4 in the car.... What's up with the silence about this one??? I'm really enjoying this set... More than I thought I would... I'm digging Hamp's vocals...
  16. Whoops... :blush2:  I misread the title... I thought it was a Top 5 list... (Well the following list is to my Top 3.. of those I own... )
  17. Elvin Farlow Anita O'Day And probably Oscar Peterson... which is in my listening queue... (Getting through the Lionel Hampton now...)
  18. I'm thinking that Cuscuna was involved since the Mosaic set came out recently... In digging through the vaults he must have known that this other material was there (and presumably in good condition).... so that's why I'm thinking there's probably little if any (I HOPE) duplication between the upcoming set and the Mosaic... I wonder how many CD's it will be??? My guess is probably 5.. maybe 4??? Wonder if there'll be any previously unissued stuff????
  19. I'm hoping you're right... At less than $40 this would be quite the coup... if it is this... It would be VERY COOL... to have nearly all the OP from 1951-53!!!!!!
  20. just saw this on Tower.com.... http://www.tower.com/songbooks-oscar-peter.../wapi/113497240 Anybody got any info or ideas? :excited: Will this replicate the Mosaic set at all? (My instinct is that it won't since it's being put out by Verve and Cuscuna might have been involved).. How many cds? thanks
  21. The difference between the DVD and the CD... is that the DVD has the songs in a different order with longer versions played in front of a studio audience... She had a CD/DVD release on her last record "Live." I like the format personally and wish more artists would do it... It doesn't raise the cost of the purchase that much....
  22. Listening to Disc 1 of the Lionel Hampton set in my car... I'm liking it a lot... Not too much talk on the board about this one...
  23. that's an understatement... She's hot!!!
  24. Don't get me wrong... I do like her... I just wish she would really stretch out sometimes....
