  1. Now this has FAR more appeal to me than the Armstrong... and even slightly more than the Goodman.... Keep twisting my arm.... :0 Why? Lester Young's 1936-1940 recordings that are collected on the Mosaic set outclass his 1950s Verve dates, at least to my ears. I agree. There was no better Pres than 1936-40, in my opinion. I'd consider it among the five most-essential collections of jazz, ever, along with, Bird's Dial material, Louis Armstrong Hot Five/Seven, Miles' Classic Quintet, and Webster/Blanton Ellington groups. ...okay, don't hold me to that specific list for more than five minutes. But this Pres will ALWAYS be in the top five. If you've already got of most of the material - aside from some of the 'new discoveries' - you're adequately covered. But you MUST have SOME of this!
  2. hm.... I've got the Verve 7 CD set of Lester so I'm disinclined to get this one....
  3. I plan on getting both... but just pre-ordered Master of the Art....
  4. what's wrong with Bill Evans???
  5. Damn... I knew I forgot a few....
  6. Ouch.....
  7. okay... given the flack I got for stating that I just can't get into Armstrong... it got me to thinking.... I suspect despite all of our collective love for jazz... that there are individual "greats" that we just can't get into... So who is it for you??? You can check more than one... (And yes it was an arbitrary list..so don't jump on me... since you're guy is not on the list.... )
  8. Onto something very different... Johnny Smith Disc 3....
  9. http://www.nonesuch.com/albums/complete-fr...store-exclusive $20 for all 3 sets.. A pretty good price if you ask me... They were having a special when the CD came out and I got the additional sets for $15..... :excited: Where is it available ?
  10. Ditto the above... Now Dave Douglas Quintet Live at the Jazz Standard - the 2nd set of Dec. 8th 2006... I guess the equivalent would be Disc 8... this is a great set for those of you didn't get it! There is a physical 2cd version available also...
  11. thanks man... that's very helpful...
  12. Some of us are in a Mosaic Recession... I'm leaning toward the Goodman.. but I hate that many alternate takes... Did you get the Goodman?
  13. I have to say... If I was going to get one set... I'm iffy about .. it would probably be the Benny Goodman ahead of the Armstrong any comments????
  14. John Handy Select Discs 1 and 2... I'm finding it a tad (not much)... disappointing.... You know what it is... I was so blown away by the Zeitlin Select I listened to a few days ago... (and this Billie Holliday set I'm listening to in the car).... that everything else is just not really working for me..... now Disc 3.... For some reason... I really like the live sessions a lot more than the studio sessions....
  15. I for one.. want that Damn Betty Carter live Select.... :D
  16. My take on it is this... I have made 6-10 emails/comments making suggestions.. You're right they do give polite responses... sometimes with more feedback than others.. So in general I don't think they really take them into their planning and decision-making process... with ONE exception... I get the sense that the Braxton Arista stuff was always planned by Cuscuna but with constant discussion on this board (and others) they felt there was enough of a market for it... They even say so in the brochure... " "For years customers have been requesting it. Internet discussion groups have filled with rumors about it...." Why that one and no others?? I have no idea..... I betcha some of the insiders will have more input on this than I....!
  17. How did the Mosaic compare to the non-legit "Jimmy Giuffre/jim Hall Trio - Complete Studio Recordings (4 Cd Box Set)"? http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/record.php?record_id=5206 I decided to pick up a copy of this as I the Mosaic is LONG OOP and I really like Jim Hall... Any thoughts?
  18. It's KIND of a box set... Set 3 of the (Download ONLY) Brad Mehldau Trio Live from Nonesuch..... Very good for those of you didn't get it... I only wish they made it a physical CD set....
  19. I respectfully disagree.... For example... does it help me knowing that Miles beat up Cicely Tyson... (yea a little).. Does it change whether or not I enjoy him? No but it does add context..... Seconded.
  20. You're kinda in the ballpark with what I mean...
  21. From everything I know about him... that his on-stage persona actually did drive some of what he did.... (I'm not explaining it well.... ) What's Armstrong's "smiling, grinning persona" got to do with his music?
  22. I'm having a hard time with this one... I have tried but I have NEVER been able to get into Armstrong.... I can't get past the smiling, grinning persona... (bugs me  ) I know - I should... I might eventually cave on this one... but right now.... :beee:
  23. yea he plays guitar and bari sax @ the same time... Kinda like a new version of Rashaan Roland Mulligan.... A merger of two sets?
