She did both.. A lot of solo tunes when she played on guitar or piano... and she had the full band.. She was hot... really funny.. great stage presence... I was very pleasantly surprised... The lack of strings didn't matter.. might have even added a tad bit of suspense.. Definitely go if you can.... The show here was sold out weeks ago...

Caught her show last night... Very impressive... she was into it and played for 2 hours... Definitely recommended...! :tup :tup

new box set on Oscar Peterson Songbooks???
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
thanks Ron... Seems all the usual US distributors (e.g., Amazon, CDU, tower) don't have this in stock... And it seems to be ONLY available from our Canadian friends... I've never seen that happen before... -
Way way way better than nothing... Me - I'll take what they give me.... Nothing. Some of their other sets (the Beiderbecke/Trumbauer/Teagarden set, for instance) have lots of vocals. Why don't you ask them why they're leaving out the vocals on this one? The reasoning on the Goodman set was that almost all of the vocal material had been issued separately by Collectors' Choice or other labels. I haven't really checked on how much of the Helen Forrest etc. from Shaw's band is available elsewhere...but I'm guessing that including the vocals would make either the Shaw or Goodman boxes 12-13 CDs, which might be a bit unwieldy for cost/price/economic purposes in the present climate. In a way, I can understand leaving the vocals out, but still, I think doing so creates a distorted picture of the Shaw band, and the era. iIwould say that the vocals tracks are essential to a valid understanding of any of the big bands, and to leave them out goes against the very reason Mosaic was created, as quoted from their website: We want Mosaic Records Box Sets to be as important, and as complete as we can make them. Our sets include every significant track that falls within the scope of a given project, presented in an organized, chronological manner. We go into the vaults of as many record labels as necessary to examine all the original session tapes. In addition to all previously issued material, Mosaic box sets are usually rich with unreleased tracks and valid alternate takes. It's no accident we're considered the label for fans and collectors "who want it all". It's nice that this set is being created, but I feel that this continuing trend, in terms of traditional big bands, weakens the historical and artistic viability of what Mosaic is doing. I don't want to go on rant, but still, I think Mosaic can do better. Still, in these financial times, this is way better than nothing.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
tranemonk replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
As per my last post... I decided to give Stitt Disc 9 a spin.... -
Yea a 13-CD set would be destructive... I can't see them issuing another set more than 10 CD's ever.. The last biggies were the Stitt and O'Day which came out at 9CDs Nothing. Looks like Storyville is releasing some live Johnny + a DVD from a Village Vanguard performance... I had one of the dates... but as CDU has got it for a ridiculous price.. .I caved... http://www.storyvillerecords.com/Default.aspx http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7955729 :excited: Hopefully it will come in better packaging than the Art Tatum & Ben Webster boxes last year....

new box set on Oscar Peterson Songbooks???
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
thanks for the first hand review/knowledge Ted.... I'm bumming about the "not new" tracks... but it doesn't make a lot of difference to me as I didn't have any of this stuff before... Is the packaging cheap? What would u compare it to? -
new box set on Oscar Peterson Songbooks???
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I got it for $37.50 before the price went up.... Just curious, tranemonk. What was the great price you got? Tower is showing $41.50 currently. I just bought the OP Mosaic but have yet to crack it open. My discovery of him is yet to begin. -
new box set on Oscar Peterson Songbooks???
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
yea I'm wondering about this part.... "30 + tracks never before on CD ".... The thing I find so cool about this.. is that I suspect this is the last time this stuff is going to be reissued... As much as I love OP he's not Miles/Trane/Brubeck in that the record companies will release the same stuff 7 -8 times... -
new box set on Oscar Peterson Songbooks???

I'm thrilled.... I was really hoping this stuff would come out... Between this and the Mosaic set... No better tribute to the man's passing... -
new box set on Oscar Peterson Songbooks???
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That's exactly what I was hoping... Different time period--the Mosaic is the early-50s trio with Barney Kessel on guitar and no drummer. The box you're getting is the late '50s trio with Ed Thigpen on drums and no guitarist. -
new box set on Oscar Peterson Songbooks???
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I could kiss you Ron... (figuratively....) :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: I'm assuming this is the best case scenario... with none of this duplicating the Mosaic... ? Here's what you're getting (I googled "Oscar Peterson," "The Songbooks," Verve, and the UPC code from the Tower page): http://www.grigorian.com/webstore/view.php?iid=353291 5 discs--a Canadian release by Verve. Looks like a great deal! -
new box set on Oscar Peterson Songbooks???
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
okay... I'm sure I'm going to get slammed by someone... but I ordered my set blind... Tower had a ridiculous price... and I figure if it is useless... I'll just send it back.... Whatever it is ... it will be out Tuesday... I've got my fingers crossed.... :excited: -
Silence, Love or No Love for Lionel Hampton set????
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I trust your call on that one... My prob is that the clips on the Mosaic set are REALLY bad... like I can barely hear the music with my sound levels turned all the way up... I don't have that experience with any other set except the Chu.... -
Silence, Love or No Love for Lionel Hampton set????
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
My concern about the Chu is sound quality...The clips on the Mosaic set IMHO are not very good.... This is one of the strongest sets I have. The whole set is dynamite; tight, swinging, solid. I love it. I agree with others who've said it's among the most essential sessions in all of jazz. Definitely not to be missed. Even if I had the Bluebirds (I don't) I'd still get the Mosaic to be sure I had good transfers on CD as well as LP. And I highly, highly recommend the Chu. I knew the Hamp set was going to be blazing...but the quality of the Chu was like a sucker-punch to the jaw. In a good way. -
name doesn't bother me....
-
I've got the first 3 and you are right... They are excellent... :excited: As much as I like Cdbaby and will continue purchasing there... In general their prices are high (the previous Pepper releases were fine).... I wonder what the cost of this set will be??? My guess is $40-50... In any case... I'm there the day it comes out...

tranemonk replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That is a GREAT photo!!! If I had to pick a few.... I'd probably recommend the Live at the Blue Note boxed set available on Telarc... It's 4 cd's you can probably get for under $30.... -
