  1. I was just reading a review from jazztimes about this set and that issue... and one of the comments was that the number of jam session selections was not as much (less than 50%) than people think.... and thanks SJ... this one is a tough one for me...
  2. I'm feeling very nostalgic about Verve (and other) boxed sets which are going to disappear soon. :o Many of these boxes (particularly the previously unreleased live stuff) were printed in the late 90's when the economy was better and MP3 was not the standard way of getting rare music. Given that and recent discussions about the Mosaic Oscar Peterson set... I took some early Xmas $$ and purchased the Complete Quartets & Quintets (Oscar Peterson & Lionel Hampton) on Verve. I also caved in (on Concord's website - which has got some ridiculously good deals) for the Jazz at the Santa Monica Civic '72 3cd set and the Greatest Jazz Concert in the World 3cd set. Given the disaster of today's (and tomorrow's) economy and the preferred business model of offering music for download - I have a feeling that many of these sets are going to disappear... The one that I passed on originally was the Complete JATP 10 CD set. At the time it was WAY too pricey and then I just bought the single "best of CD." I was also concerned about the sound quality. Doing a quick search it's still available on tower.com at a nice price of $130.00 http://www.tower.com/complete-jazz-philhar.../wapi/105798343 Amazon is more at $180... So for those of you who got it... Are you glad??? I'm torn as I know once it's OOP it ain't coming back....
  3. Wow.... I woulda though the McCoy or Hutcherson would win this in a runaway... <_<
  4. mccoy, bobby hutcherson and Toshiko.... that should last you for a while....
  5. oops...my bad  Hey! I said Berry in post #47. I like it.
  6. One VERY interesting omission to-date.... (I think).... is the Chu Berry... Who purchased that??? Not that hot???
  7. okay... now you've really got me thinking... I'm suspecting the answer to this is no... but is there any duplication between the Mosaic set and the Verve 5CD set with OP and Lionel Hampton (the complete quartets and quintets)??? And does anyone have that set?? is it worth me grabbing it before that one goes OOP??? thanks
  8. Now you guys got me going... I don't have the London House sessions box but had to put on the The Trio.... I'm going to break out the new box after the semester ends!! One more week
  9. 26 of 69 tracks are alternate tracks 37.7% Ah, a very important comment from my point of view. What kind of percentage of alternative takes is there in the set? MG
  10. glad u're liking it Ron..... this one lost me due to the number of alternate takes....
  11. as I've got no Handy I think I'm going to grab this one... and maybe the Live at Yoshi's 2CD Good choices????
  12. I've got it but haven't gotten to it yet...
  13. I'm finding this VERY interesting..... I'm surprised that the following has not popped up yet... 1) JJ Johnson Columbia Small Group 2) Complete Mercury Max Roach 3) Verve/Phillips Dizzy set.. Hm...
  14. Moved onto the digital Johnny Smith Roost Disc 6....
  15. Digital Version of Turrentine set... Disc 4...
  16. Part of my attraction is I really dig her voice in this set... Just kinda subtle, raw sexy..... I'm probably going to cave and get the Goodman despite the alternate tracks...
  17. okay... my last post got me thinking..... Of those Mosaics you possess.... what are your three favorites??? (Doesn't have to be in order of preference..) I'd have to go... 1) Elvin Jones Blue Note Sessions 2) Anita O'Day * 3) Two way tie... Stanley Turrentine & Tal Farlow... ** With one caveat... I have the Oscar Peterson but haven't had a chance to listen to it yet... and I suspect it might jump on this list... How's that for a top 3... maybe 5?
  18. I know there are board members who disagree with me... but this set is in my top 3 mosiacs.... :excited: I listened to some of that the other day, too.
  19. Really??? Do we have an ETA on ther other Akiyoshi set? and what specific titles??? :excited: With regard to #4, Mosaic has plans for yet another Akiyoshi/Tabackin Select which includes "Road Time" and other live recordings by that band.
  20. okay since I apparently killed this thread... I'm still a little torn over this set... It does seem to be an unusually high number of alt. takes.... Am I wrong about that? Did anyone buy/receive/listen to this set? thanks
  21. hmm.... some of my mistakes.... dinah washington set, chico hamilton come quickly to mind
  22. I was curious about the prevalence of alternate takes... so I counted.. Out of 177 songs on the 7 cds there are 66 alternate takes.... or 37.2% of all the songs   They would have had to do one and a half CD's just for the alternate takes... This seems like a LOT even by Mosaic standards... As I'm one who doesn't like a lot of alt takes... :beee: :beee: I think I might be passing on this one... I might take your advice and do the small groups Victor set... (even though that also has a lot of alt takes - just not 66!) thanks
  23. Good point Chuck.. But my thinking is this.. 1) Goodman's volume of output is pretty large (thus making it difficult to determine which are "Must-haves") 2) Given the massive number of reissues/bastardization/compilations/imports/etc., it is difficult to determine which Goodman releases are legit and which are fraudulent. 3) Given his historical place in the music, I figured a large sample - would provide a good assessment of his contributions and finally 4) I trust Mosaic... What do you think?
  24. Don't have very much Goodman... I assume this would be a good (if not great) sample??? Opinions???
