  1. Well I'm just about finished listening to this set... and I've got to give my 2 cents... Let me preface this with 2 comments... 1) I have 25 Mosaic sets... so I'm very familar with them and their stuff 2) I had not heard any Dinah before this... (and yes I had read the AMG bio...) Given that... I have to say... this is a DUD! Actually it's kinda painful... Parts of Disc 4 are the only worthwhile tunes... The general reasons to stay away from this set are the following: 1) WAY TOO MANY POORLY DONE sessions with strings. This composes probably 60% of the set. Generally speaking - IMHO, it is very difficult to put together a GOOD jazz record with strings. (It has been done.... ) but NONE of these are on this set.... 2) ALL the tracks (6-12) with a vocal background group are AWFUL. Just bad. 3) Even the few tracks on Disc 4 that are okay... it feels like Dinah is just NOT into it... I had some problems with the Sarah Vaughn box for similar reasons... but there were 2 or 3 CD's in that box that are very good. There's very little in this set worth giving a 2nd look to. Sorry but this is the most disappointing Mosaic I have - by far. At least I've got the Sonny Stitt and Anita O'Day to look forward to on my listening list!!!
  2. Dinah Washington - Disc 4... Finally getting better... Will post a mini-review when I'm done....
  3. It doesn't include enough "Desperate Housewives" commercials? LOL... I guess I'd hold out for another chance to see Nicholette Sheridan drop her towel... excited: Although I must say... I'm more of a Teri Hatcher or Felecity Huffman kinda guy... So let's see T.O. wants more $$$ and more commercials with Nicholette Sheridan... and Tom Brady gets more $$, another ring AND Bridget Moynihan.... HM....
  4. completely agree with Ron S. (It's not the first time nor the last. .I'll agree with my Phillly comprade.... minus one tiny Super Bowl game... Sorry Ron... had to get that one in.... ) Anyway on the Golson/Farmer set... 2 things surprised... I forgot how strong a tenor player Benny was in his prime (or near his prime)... and the Art Farmer ballads are gorgeous... !!! As a result of this set.... I went out and bought a couple of more Art Farmers.... On a related note... 441 records is releasing a lot of stuff from the 1970's (no, it's not electric...) originally from the East Wind label.... I just picked up Art Farmer's "Yesterday's Thoughts" off their "Test of Time" record label... Excellent... here's the URL at cduniverse if you're interested in more recent Art reissues.... http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...&cart=246380519 the same CD at overstock.com is a couple pennies cheaper... http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?pa...prod_id=1411747 okay returning to the topic at hand... as many on this board will know, I've been doing a Mosaic splurge this year... (and last year... and the Farmer/Golson set is high on my list of excellent releases....!!!! So GO FOR IT MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh any BTW Ron.. you're gonna kill me... But what's the scoop with Terrell Owens sissy fit about ANOTHER new contract?? B-)
  5. Dinah Washington - Disc 2 (earlier in the car)... not great... okay... I think I like the Sarah Vaughn set better...
  6. How much would you say of your purchase comes down to the fact that you "trust" Mosaic? I know in my case, there are sets I've bought without knowing anything about the musician, simply because I trust Mosaic. Sometimes that's been great (Bud Shank, Johnny Smith), sometimes it's been not-so-good (Chico Hamilton). Regardless, I feel like they have WAY more than earned the benefit of the doubt, when it comes to artists (or periods) that I am less familar with. In general there are very other companies (and I'm not just talking about music, I mean everything) that I have the same level of trust in, as I do Mosaic... Am I alone on this front??? Somehow I don't think so.... B-)
  7. Haven't seen much discussion of this on this board. Well, I just got through Disc 1 and I think it's a bit of mixed bag... What's good is VERY good and what's bad (IMHO) is fairly bad. The only tracks I put it the latter category (based on Disc 1) are the tracks with "The New Allegros... Didn't have any of her previous recordings and I figured a Mosaic 5CD set was a good place to start.... Let's see where this goes... Hoping it gets more consistent... Any thoughts for those of you who did buy the set?
  8. Sounds like you're a guitar man. B-) A little bit.... But I gotta tell you... Disc 8 may have been the best.... I kinda always feel like I can trust Ben Webster... (Kinda like my musical teddy bear...All else fails just put on a Ben Webster record.... Ah.... B-) Well... on the whole, the Columbia Sessions did not thrill me... By far the best were Discs 6-8.... But perhaps as with our wise Ron... I will give it a second spin and hear something new... But for now... onto the new Jarrett Double CD... Radiance !
  9. Columbia Swing Sessions Disc 7... Yup you were right Ron S.... Herbie Ellis IS swinging...! Disc 6 (Kenny Burrell) also helped turned it around for me.... Overall... but THANK YOU to Herbie and Kenny... (A little Coleman Hawkins didn't hurt either... )
  10. I know I posted this a week ago... (and 5 minutes ago... but I'm having [or the board is having] weird computer problems... so excuse the 2nd post... I'm dying to get more info on this set.... posted at cduniverse.com http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...&cart=245407048 I didn't get any feedback with my original post but I thought I would try again... Anybody know - # of CD's? Off of what records? Any unreleased music? Is Cuscuna or Mosaic involved with this? thanks
  11. columbia swing sessions - Disc 4... A tiny bit of swinging.... although I have to disagree with many of my honorable colleagues aboout the Ada Moore/Jimmy Rushing set.... Completely did not work for me... Seemed very forced and I did not get any sense of genuine chemistry between Rushing & Moore... Both seemed unenthusiatic at best... let's hope Kenny Burrell & Illinois Jacquet can save this set for me....
  12. Onto Disc 2 - Columbia Swing Sessions.. Ruby Braff... And I'm STILL NOT swinging... I'm kinda feeling Ron. S.'s first reaction to the same set... Although he was kind enough to give it a second whirl... We'll see about Disc 3... (just glad to off of Ruby Braff...)
  13. Disc 1 of the Columbia Swing Sessions... Ruby Braff.. So far I'm NOT swinging....
  14. thanks for all the comments... Nice to know what to stay away from.... I will probably check out the Artie Shaw 3-CD box... at least I'll be able to hear that one.. .
  15. According to jazzmatazz and cduniverse, there's a 10CD box coming out about Artie Shaw from a German label... here's the URL ... http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...ic&frm=lk_jzmtz I'm assuming it's kinda like the Proper Box... but 10CD's for $17??? Anbody know anything about this????
  16. after getting my 5 month old daughter to fall asleep to "My Favorite Things" (indoctrination starts early at my house! :) ) I've found another reason to love Coltrane... So I looking my 'Trane Collection... and reading stuff wondering about this set... For those of you who have it.... reviews????
  17. Well, since I just got the message from Michael, my hopes are up! I'll take what I can get... so we're talking about 3 Different selects for the Three Sounds (total of 9CD's)? If so do we have an ETA????
  18. okay I'm being redundant but at the moment I'm feeling very Three Sounds-ish... I just put on "Live at the It Club" and was wondering if we had discussed the need for a Three Sounds box... and Lo and Behold... WHAM!!! I was just looking at the discography over at AMG... and it appears that not all of their stuff had been released on CD.... Is it time for a lobbying campaign??? And what would be in it???

  20. OHMIGAWD!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't even know what else to say...
  21. okay... so you're saying that this should be like the case with the Tal Farlow that we all bought from Camian and other places.... for half the price... But if you look at cduniverse's page it doesn't mention that it's an import...
  22. I've done that once or twice... but I don't think you will regret it...
  23. Hey what gives??? http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...&cart=243587047 I understand about the Select sets being available from Non-Mosaic sites.. but the NEW box sets???? I know we all talked about the Farlow.. But this does not appear to be an import.... Anybody got the scoop???? I though the Verve sets would be available AFTER they went out of print with Mosaic.... I'm not sure this is a good thing...
  24. the Turrentine is great... I have to say though... My current fave of the inprint Mosaics is the Elvin Jones box... with the Tal Farlow/Golson-Jazztet/ sets a close second... Although I just bought the Stitt, Anita O'Day and Dinah Washington and have yet to get a chance to listen to those :)))) AHH... This is like having too many good bottles of wine... I'm glad your getting positive feedback on the Clayton set... post a review, when you get it and let us know what you think...
  25. I guess that's a fair argument... I think we may have differing approaches here (which of course, we are all entitled to our own way of the world...) Just out of curiousity... Do you have all the Mosaics you want that are still in print???
