Grab the JJJ set while you can. It's one of my favorite Mosaics -
For those interested, I just got this e-mail from Eremite: http://eremite.com/discography/bluewinter_47_48.html mte-47/48 BLUE WINTER Fred Anderson tenor saxophone Hamid Drake drums William Parker bass & nagaswaram Blue Winter is a milestone achievement in the great career of one of the stalwarts of the tenor saxophone, Fred Anderson. An exponent of the illustrious Chicago heavyweight tenor tradition that includes his contemporaries Gene Ammons, Johnny Griffin, John Gilmore & Von Freeman, Anderson spent decades as a family man & bar owner before starting to seriously tour & record in the nineties. Born 1929 in Monroe, Louisiana, Anderson migrated to Chicago in 1940, where he devoted many years of study to the music of Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, & Charlie Parker. In 1964 Anderson co-founded the seminal Chicago musicians' organization the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). The strength & individuality of his playing in early AACM ensembles with Muhal Richard Abrams, Joseph Jarman, & Henry Threadgill earned Anderson the nickname "the lone prophet of the prairie." On Blue Winter, Anderson is joined by one of the premier rhythm sections in any music genre, Willi http://eremite.com/discography/perles1_45.html mte-45 PERLES NOIRES volume I Sunny Murray drums Sabir Mateen alto & tenor saxophones, alto-clarinet Dave Burrell piano Alan Silva bass Louis Belogenis tenor saxophone Sunny Murray’s talent is bigger than any category you could use to describe it. He’s one of the most original musical minds of the past 50 years, a genuine innovator, the liberator of the drum kit, and an artist of uncompromising honesty. Murray's playing in the 1960s with Albert Ayler, Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, & others opened up entirely new expressive realms for the drums in jazz. Murray’s act of liberation-- to free drummers from their strict time keeping role --still outrages many listeners, and his militant individuality, his obstinate adherence to his artistic vision over the years, still make him something of an outlaw presence in jazz. It should come as no shock to his listeners, then, that the music on this CD and its companion volume, recorded on brief visits to the U.S. from Murray’s home base in Paris, is full of fire and surprise, ornery as hell, charming and urbane, and totally, unstintingly true to his free-spirited aesthetic. http://eremite.com/discography/perles2_46.html mte-46 PERLES NOIRES volume II Sunny Murray drums Sabir Mateen alto & tenor saxophones, clarinet John Blum piano Oluyemi Thomas bass clarinet & c-melody saxophone It needs to be said that the Volume II designation of this disc does not mean the music is in any way inferior to the music on Volume I. There’s enough great music from Sunny Murray’s 2003 Northeast tour to fill yet another volume. The designation is dictated partly by chronology --this material comes from the later part of the tour-- and partly by an aesthetic decision to program the music to show off the diversity and contrasts in Murray’s handling of the different ensembles he worked with on the tour. At 66, Murray is a different drummer than he was forty years ago when he first made jazz history with Cecil Taylor & Albert Ayler. Partly that’s because it’s harder at his age to physically sustain the intense high energy of previous decades. Partly, it’s a matter of artistic growth, development, and change. Murray’s drumming on these discs is unfailingly musical. His unerring touch, sensitivity to sound and color, his relaxation and swing, are the mark of a mature talent who knows exactly what he’s doing. As he approaches 70 years of age, Murray’s creativity, wit, and power are at a mature peak and no aspect of improvised music is beyond this most individual --and still radical-- drummer.

I hope your starting bid is not too risky. Good luck!
-
European members shouldn't get too excited, J&R still doesn't ship overseas.
-
The board has been down several times today...
-
Brownie, what's "reasonable"? I have a few of these "Complete" sets and I'd like to get them all. Unfortunatley, Red Trumpet, the only place that stocks them, wants almost $45 + shipping for each of them. Too rich for me. I'd buy both of these sets if they were reasonable and since you don't want that JJ set, let me know how much it is. I might be interested. Kevin ← Kevin, Why don't you ask Hiroshi? He might be able to get them for you at a reasonable price - if Brownie can't, of course.

Everything OK, Lon?
-
My advice: don't. Had it and sold it.

This material was recorded on June 17-18 and October 26-29, 1959 in NYC and originally released on Roulette 52031 (6/17-18 dates, sides 1-2) and 52043 (10/26-29 dates, sides 3-4). Personnel: Phineas Newborn, Jr. - piano; John Simmons - bass; Roy Haynes - drums.
-
And many happy returns!
-
Jimmy Rowles' Pacific Jazz recordings will be included in the Trio set, so I did a search with his name and found these posts; many of the posts are about the Trio set.

The forthcoming Pacific Jazz Trios set has been discussed here before, though I can't find it right now.

um -- about the desmond: http://half.ebay.com/cat/buy/prod.cgi?cpid...6830&pr=3049385 ← What's your point? ← Get it cheaper from the link? ← Maybe, but not if you're outside North America, they don't ship overseas. Besides, I don't think it's fair to post links to cheaper copies or mention ways to obtain cheaper copies in a seller's thread, even if you've got something against them. ← I just don't think it's too nice what Evan did. Buyers can figure that out and this person is telling you what he's got available. ← well brad, i thought about that. would dropping that link be considered meanspirited? i decided that if i were interested in buying a cd i would want to know that a REMASTER of the cd was available AND at a cheaper price. if the seller was a regular, i would have dropped him a pm. since he has posted a handful of times since joining a year ago i have not gotten to know him (her?) and his lack of posting indicates a desire not to be known around here. so i nixed the idea of a pm. if people think i was out of line i'll delete the post. ← Yes, I think you were out of line, frustrating someone's sale is not very nice in my opinion - see my post above. I also think PM-ing someone if you've got a bone to pick with them is always better than going public, whether they're a regular poster or not.

To my ears the sound on the TOCJs is better than the Mosaic (in comparison), but that doesn't mean the sound on the latter is not acceptable, given the quality (or lack thereof) of the recordings.
-
Hard to argue with that. I've heard a lot of complaints about the sound vis a vis the TOCJs (which I don't have). Is that true? ← Yes, the sound on the TOCJs is definitely better.
-
Yes, David, thank you. As you probably know Mosaic's overseas shipping rates are very high; my "all-in European price" is lower, so this might be of interest to European members - that's why I posted it here. ← And there is no risk of having to pay customs tax. ← Exactly.
-
The next Mosaic to go is the Lee Morgan 1950s Blue Note set, but that one'll go straight to eBay.
