Wolfgang Dauner "Rischka's Light Faces"
J.A.W. replied to Homefromtheforest's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Please note that this is about as close to being an explicit solicitation of an unauthorized copy of a commercial product as can be tolerated. Such solicitation is against forum policy and can result in editing or deletion of posts, or even entire threads. Going forth, discretion, please. And good luck on your quest! This is exactly what the problem is here. Even though a moderator might not agree with one of the board rules (and there aren't that many compared to other boards) he's supposed to at least warn members who (threaten to) violate that rule. It can be any rule, not just the one mentioned above. If he doesn't, he can be accused of not doing his job, which happens with some regularity; if he does he'll get bashed over it, if not worse. In other words, he's damned if he doesn't and he's damned if he does. A moderator must have a thick skin here; I didn't have one. My problem, surely, but I can imagine why people are not exactly standing in line to become a moderator. -

Did he have any idea what happened? Was the CD damaged?

Anyone order online from Downtown Music Gallery?
J.A.W. replied to CJ Shearn's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I've ordered a few times from them online and it wasn't a good experience: the orders took ages and the last time they sent a wrong item; I returned it when they asked me to, and then everything went silent... Long story short, I had to move heaven and earth to get my money back. Never again. -
Are there any box bargains currently available?

Woody Shaw - Complete Muse Recordings on Mosaic

Scott told me The Real Thing isn't included because Hayes was the leader of that date. The Mosaic only includes Shaw leader dates on Muse. -

I guess only the people at Mosaic can answer the The Real Thing question I've asked Scott about it. -
It'd be nice to visit DC (and also NYC) again, but unfortunately that's not going to happen in the foreseeable future. Great musea. My first priority is the renovated Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, but that's another topic

As was mentioned several times on this board there'll be no more Selects. I missed that news ... bummer. I miss the Mosaic Singles series as well. I have just about all of the 32 Jazz Shaw reissues, but I'll definitely be picking up the Mosaic set. I was told the Selects were not cost-effective, on the contrary. I'll miss them too, it was a great series. At one time they were thinking about a Select with Dave Bailey's leader dates on JazzTime, JazzLine and Epic (despite the complete set on one of the Spanish/Andorran labels) and - if I remember correctly - also about a Chico Hamilton Select with his early 1960s Quintet with Gabor Szabo and Charles Lloyd. -

Earl Hines Mosaic box scheduled for release in December 2012
J.A.W. replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I guess it's safe to say that the sound is better than on the Classics. I never doubted that for a moment. But how much better? I was being careful because when it comes to sound quality opinions vary and discussions about it tend to turn into heated arguments, if not fights -
Congratulations. Looks like a great job.

Hopefully you won't be hit by a tax bill. These couriers, like for instance UPS, have a habit of sending tax bills after they have delivered the goods, often with hefty handling fees. Good luck. -

I see. I did have some of those LPs, but I don't remember how they sounded. The pressings weren't that great.

CDs only, since late 1995. Why do you ask?
-
Michael AddeyMalcolm's son? Just kidding
-
Which McMaster are you referring to? McMaster is not credited on the 1989 CD reissue, Malcolm Addey is.
-
But it doesn't say that he mastered it, only that he remixed it.
-
The original CD reissue of Total Eclipse was released in 1989, not the 1990s. It was remixed by Malcolm Addey, but there are no mastering credits. There's no mention of Ron McMaster; he's explicitly mentioned on other Blue Note CD reissues from those years, so he might not have been involved in this one.
-
Well, if it exposes tape hiss Grundman didn't use heavy noise reduction during mastering, which is a positive point in my book. On the other hand boosting the highs generally isn't. Haven't heard that FLAC remaster, so I can't comment.

Looking for "HIP" Haydn string quartets recommendations
J.A.W. replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Classical Discussion
Listened to audio samples of the Salomon Quartet in several Haydn string quartets and I changed my mind; their playing is great: tight, transparent and indeed very tasteful. I think it can stand repeated listening. Unfortunately, their Haydn CDs are out of print and only available as - more often expensive than cheap - used copies or as CD-Rs directly from Hyperion for prices that are too high for CD-Rs in my opinion, around £10 after discount. Pity. -
Looking for "HIP" Haydn string quartets recommendations
J.A.W. replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Classical Discussion
I listened to one of their Haydn discs (not the one you posted about) and found them a little "light" compared to the Quatuor Mosaïques, lacking a bit of "body". I found the latter more satisfying in that respect.
