  1. Bought this recently for a ridiculous price and the sound quality is excellent : http://www.amazon.com/8-Classic-Albums-Three-Sounds/dp/B005SQ3B2K That's a European public-domain release. Those PD labels do not have access to original sources like mastertapes; usually existing CDs and LPs are used as sources.
  2. The Carter/Bradford is now available from ImportCDs for $13.78 plus shipping: http://www.importcds.com/music/2609714/john-carter-bobby-bradford-quartet-flight-for-four My copy just shipped.
  3. I think you mean posthumous releases
  4. I've also heard a few horror stories about Windows 8. I'm perfectly happy with Windows 7, and before that XP worked fine for me. Never used Vista.
  5. These are LPs on the Omnivore label. No idea if they're legit.
  6. This is clearly an above average hard-bop set, at least in my opinion. Get it!
  7. To my ears many of his interpretations are way over the top: overly expressive and emotional, sentimental even. Can't listen to them. To each their own I wonder if it's a cultural thing. Many Americans adore or even idolize him, but in Europe he's not that much appreciated; I've read and heard more negative than positive reactions to his work here.
  8. I second Larry's recommendation of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra's version: Amazon U.K.: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Schoenberg-Verklarte-Nacht-Chamber-Symphonies/dp/B000001GCA/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1372630812&sr=1-2&keywords=Orpheus+Schoenberg Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Schoenberg-Verkl%C3%A4rte-Nacht-Chamber-Symphonies/dp/B000001GCA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372630916&sr=8-1&keywords=B000001GCA Simon Rattle is not my cup of tea. There are a few conductors whose work doesn't click with me, and he's one of them. Leonard Bernstein is another, and so are Lorin Maazel, Daniel Barenboim and Michael Tilson Thomas - to name but a few
  9. Indeed. I wonder how much longer this set will be available from Mosaic. It was released in 1998...

    Hank Mobley

I like that Cobblestone one. There's some very nice unaccompanied solo stuff somewhere in there, if I remember it right. MG I haven't heard it in a long time, so I might change my mind, but IIRC 'trying too hard' to do something different was my initial reaction... Haven't heard Breakthrough! in years, but I remember not liking it all those years ago.
  11. Ace/BGP's site: http://acerecords.co.uk/bgp-label
  12. Apparently it's legit ("taken from original source tapes"), so here's a link to Amazon U.K.: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Friends-Neighbors-Ornette-Prince-Street/dp/B00CONC162/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1372423785&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=ornette+coleman+friends+and+neighbours According to Amazon UK the Heron set is on "BGP/Ace," so should be as legit as possible. Ace did reissue these albums, so they are indeed as legit as possible I just remembered I got an e-mail from Ace earlier this week listing these releases. Haven't been feeling too well physically these last few weeks, which is probably why I recently posted all kinds of stupid things, both here and elsewhere. I think I'd better keep quiet for a while.
  13. Part of the description of the Ornette Coleman release on Amazon U.K.: Apparently it's legit ("taken from original source tapes"), so here's a link to Amazon U.K.: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Friends-Neighbors-Ornette-Prince-Street/dp/B00CONC162/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1372423785&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=ornette+coleman+friends+and+neighbours
  14. Sorry to hear this. Played his albums a lot years ago.
  15. How are Blythe's India Navigation albums? Never heard those.
  16. Both were available on CD, in the Mitchell and Rivers Mosaic sets respectively.

Ah, now I understand how "penultimate" is (incorrectly) used on some fora; I always thought people meant "next to last" - from the Latin "paene" or "almost" and "ultimus" or "last". Latin expressions and words are often misused and/or misspelled on English-language boards. A case in point is "ad nauseam", which is regularly misspelled as "ad nauseum". There are other examples. If you don't know what it means or how to spell it, don't use it.
  18. Haven't found one yet...

There are indeed quite a few topics on Mobley here.
  20. Some OOP Mosaics still go for quite a lot, but most do indeed fetch considerably less than a few years ago. If you're looking for the highest prices the best place to sell them is still eBay, but the "golden years" seem to be gone even there. You could try selling them here, but in that case don't expect to get top dollar
  21. That's why I said "only the sets that are marked as such" in my previous post. I had no idea that it wasn't clear enough.
