Tim Hagans's Animation does Bitches Brew, live
.:.impossible replied to Guy Berger's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Who knows what kind of camera was being used... maybe nothing but a 1/4" input. It wouldn't have been hard to synch up the audio though. Surely someone was recording the board. Maybe a matrix mix will come up on the site. Still haven't listened to the audience recording yet. -
Thanks for being clear Allen. There is a lot of figurative language to decipher here. The quote goes: "No artist is ahead of his time. He is his time. It is just that the others are behind the time." - Martha Graham No artist. I always read that and think she must have had HIGH standards for what constitutes an artist. As in, there are only 12 artists alive right now.

An Xmas Idea For Your Lady...

I thought the Color Me Bad impersonations were fantastic! -
Practice more. Spend more time doing things that are important to me and less time doing things that others deem important for me. Continue to eat healthily. Continue to exercise on a regular basis (I don't want to wake up old anytime in the next two decades!). Continue to treat my wife with the respect and care she deserves. Spend more time with our families. Focus internally. Work smarter. Get up with it. Become more involved locally. Celebrate my thirtieth birthday. Start my own family. No particular order.

Happy Birthday, and thanks for your help with the Severy Pyysalo music!!!

Definitely! -
Relevant to YOU right NOW and why.

Gotcha. I would think that Gilman's idea would still apply to Parker, that his art was not contained or limited by social or historical markers. It may have been influenced by such, but not contained or limited. Imagination is the key here, if I am reading correctly.

Are you saying that fiction does not exist in music?

Judith MAlina, Julian Beck... no. Juana Molina argentina.

What is going on at the end of "John McLaughlin"? Garrison gets onto this Victor Wooten/Oteil Burbridge electric bass guitar showboat and an a capella sample comes out of nowhere. I thought it was from Logic, but he walks onto the stage with the others after the tune is brought to a sudden end. Was that Kinsey playing a sample from the Mac Book? It is hard to tell what Logic is contributing. I'd love to hear a good mix of this. -
I think that is very interesting Allen., especially in relation to Joe's previous post. I love it.

Thanks Joe. Relevant to YOU is the answer to your first question. If you don't know Juana Molina, I think she is also another female to check out, though not part of the jazz world.

What is going on during Spanish Key? Audio is totally different from the video. -

6 or 7 years ago, my friends and I talked about MMW being the core of a band like this. I guess Uninvisible and The Dropper were as close as they got. I still love to hear it. -
I am sitting here with coffee watching the Animation video on youtube though... I don't know. Too much clutter. I love the concept, but it really isn't geared for a viewing experience. It is more geared for a clicking experience. Hey, I'll take what I can get!

Yes. Great stuff! As much as I like the idea of youtube, I just don't like watching video at my desk. For one, the screen is too small, then there's the resolution. The more I think about it, the more I think footage of organissimo is a good idea. Really, how much b-3 footage is out there. Most people do not understand what you have to do to get that thing going. And we haven't even started talking about Joe and Randissimo.

That shit is hot. I'd love to hear a good mix of this band. Garrison? Did his father play bass, by chance? -
I, for one, would love to see it. Just a hunch, but I don't think Wilmington NC is on the short list of East Coast tour venues. Then again, The Duo plays here once a year, Charlie Hunter's new band came through a couple of months ago as well... Until you make it down here, I'd love to see some footage of you operating that b-3. Is there really any good footage of a b-3 player in full stride?

I've listened to it a couple of times this week, after recent purchase. Right now it just seems more of the same with the previous album, and the previous album has a few more interesting songs on it, so I wouldn't classify it as an essential purchse. OK, so I don't know that much about Linkous. I have IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. It is a solid album. The guy writes great songs. He is obviously interested in recording technique and tone. To me, though, there was no element of surprise to his music. None of it was overly interesting. It is a good, solid album that anyone could enjoy, but I don't understand the cult status. Thanks for checking in Jon. Maybe Fennesz will help Linkous take his music to another level. The thing is, Linkous makes pop/rock music. The collaboration with Fennesz is as much of a puzzle to me as the collaboration with Danger Mouse.

I just went back to the site this morning to try again and someone already bought it! I'll send you a PM.

So, are you guys saying that today's jazz avant-garde is in a fusion music, whether it be popjazz or house jazz, or other static rhythm musics? That seems to be the direction that this discussion took. I can't imagine that David Sanborn would have come up in this discussion if we were having it in 1976, 1986, 1996, much less 2006. If he were ever relevant to the core of jazz, it was for a short period of time because this is the most I've ever read about him as a jazz musician. If I'm wrong, I don't want to know. Certainly not my idea of jazz, but at least we're getting some opinions. I'm still suprised that so many others have not chimed in. No one else has an actual opinion on where jazz music is today? I think it IS important to talk about now. I think it DOES matter what we (you) think. I'm interested in examples of what you think is relevant to NOW. What will influence tomorrow, not what tomorrow will sound like.

Yeah, I always was too. Then I heard his music. It wasn't what I'd expected. The guys at the local shop seem to be big fans, so I grabbed a used album and it has grown on me. Plus, Droizd is all over it. Fennesz and Linkous seem an unlikely combination, but the stuff I have heard works on some level. Vague enough?

Any thoughts on that Jon? How did they come together?
-
Yeah, I thought about ODB's first, and The Pillage. I think I deleted that sentence. I agree though. They would be my second move. Not a fan of the Bobby Digital stuff...
