  1. You are full of good news today Street Singer! I love your name, by the way. Great tune.
  2. I hadn't heard about this!
  3. Congrats on the second favorable review of your work in Cadence Johnny! This caught my eye when I received the magazine too.
  4. I think I remember Sangrey talking about some recordings of "it" floating around. Interesting hairstyle Cosey's kickin' these days...
  5. I've been on the early-Dead kick lately. 1972 and before. And yes, DO CHECK OUT THE ALLMAN BROTHERS FROM THIS ERA! I LOVE Birdsong. Without A Net has a great version. Definitely not the only great version out there, but I had the discs playing last night. This compilation of live recordings from Fall 1989 and Spring 1990 has always sounded great to me. I was 12 at the time and my cousins and a couple of older friends wanted to take me with them to RFK. Of course my Mom said no way. I got the Without a Net double disc with my hard earned money as a consolation prize. The first Dead I ever bought was Dead Set on cassette. I listened to it as much as I listened to Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsies 2 cassette. Wore them out. My Mom made the comment once that "Rhythm Devils" sounded like putting sneakers in the dryer. That has always stuck with me. I think that is when I realized how infinite rhythm really is. BTW, I love the sound of sneakers in the dryer!
  6. Here's a show that might change your outlook of the cowboy songs, and wonder if The Grateful Dead could have become a country band. Some really great takes on songs that I thought were familiar! This was a brand new sound to me. June 28, 1969 Veteran's Auditorium Garcia sticks to the pedal steel for a handful of tunes, gazing up at all of the treble coming from Pigpen's organ. Bob's voice is full and they are really enjoying themselves. Check it out!
  7. Maren, Thank you so much. I intend on picking up a field guide, but wanted to check on a few things online as well. enature is perfect! Shawn, Hummingbirds are a lot of fun to watch. We have a bunch of feeders at our house on the Piankatank River (off the Chesapeake). I would like to set a few up here in Rhode Island as well. I should do some research though to make sure they even migrate up here! Joe, I remember you describing the pileated woodpeckers this Spring. enature.com says these birds are also know as, no shit, "logcock."
  8. ...or his copycats. Apparently, it is called "Birding." I am looking for a good online resource with images and I can't come up with anything. We put a couple of feeders in the backyard this past month and we've seen birds that I had never seen in the Mid-Atlantic. I don't know what they are! I've discovered that there are a variety of Oriole in this area (Rhode Island), but I'd like to know more. I've got a great pair of binoculars, and I plan on buying the required Rhode Island Birding book. There are many sanctuaries in the area that I enjoy hiking. Is anyone else interested in birds? Ever seen any rarities? Any help with the online image resource will be much appreciated. I've searched and searched and haven't come up with anything...
  9. I didn't realize Ralph Alessi was part of the All-Stars... he and his wife live upstairs from a good friend of ours in Astoria. Used to be Ravi's apartment. Gerry Gibbs keeps a room there, but they haven't seen or heard from him in over a year! He runs a jazz club down in TX somewhere. Somewhat related, I guess...
  10. My brother went with his girlfriend. He said the group was fantastic. He said they would open tunes with improvised preludes that sounded like chamber music. He was amazed at how together the musicians improvised together. Sounded like a good group. I've never heard this group, so I can't say. He did buy a CD and Tomasz signed it.
  11. I remember this session being pretty wound up, with very little "space" in the music. An assault of electric guitar, vibes, bass, drums, and of course Surman. I can't think of anything else quite like it, but I'm only going on memory here. Its been a while since I heard this album. Check out the awesome photo of Stu Martin though!
  12. Here 'tis! Cape Verdean Blues RVG
  13. I remember another thread on this. I'll see if I can dig it up for you.
  14. Sorry for the bad info wesbed. I guess I could have checked AMG. As Michael mentioned, the bassist was Jimmy Garrison. Its funny. Elvin & Pete LaRoca from that era, I get mixed up. I think it has something to do with the Sonny Rollins Vanguard recordings. I say "early on" for the same reason that Jim posts those photographs. Quite a contrast over time. Anyway, I hope wesbed got a round-about answer to his question.
  15. I had a 32JAZZ 2CD that I traded to someone here. Tony Scott, Bill Evans, Elvin Jones. Can't remember the bassist. The music was good, but the sound was really bad. It was a live recording of Tony early on. I definitely dig Tony's playing, but I don't know if what Jim says is exageration or not. Usually it is, but... He's a phenomenal jazz clarinetist, and the Music for Zen Meditation album is nice, though I wouldn't classify it as jazz. This disc probably isn't either, but I've never heard it. I'd be interested, but I like Indian stringed instruments!
  16. Keith Williams is the man in the white dress on the far right. Born in Porter County, just outside of Valparaiso, Indiana in December 18, 1939, his father, Nathan Williams was a working drummer. His mother, TeeWee Strauss, played piano and organ in the Lutheran Church. She was a switch operator for the telephone company for most of her life, supporting her husband Nathan and their children Keith, Sarah, and Donald. Keith learned to play the piano from TeeWee and other women at the church. He had little to no interest in the drums, along with a strained relationship with Nathan. Nathan worked almost every night of the week. He also drank almost every night of the week. As Keith got older, arguments with his father became a daily occurence. Keith and Nathan banged heads almost every afternoon after school let out. TeeWee always had something warmed up for Keith before he left for his job at the Chesterton Tribune as a mailroom clerk. Keith graduated from Valpo in 1964. He packed one bag, full of TeeWee's clothing, and headed out to Santa Monica, CA to become a singer. This is one of three known recordings documenting Keith Williams' singing career. Apparently, Keith works as a server at Michael's on 3rd in Santa Monica. It has been said that the waiter that Lewis Grizzard jokes about is this very Keith Williams.
  17. Thanks for the write-up Larry. Sounds like a great night.
  18. Thanks Dave! I'm listening to "See My City" now. What a cool song. We can only hope there's more where all of this came from. Pretty quality outakes if you ask me...
  19. I went to Okka's site and didn't see any mention of this, but I am very interested. Any insight? Thanks!
  20. "Who's there" is the most important element of a knock knock joke. Without it, it is just one person saying knock knock over and over again. Knock knock... (pause)... Knock knock... (pause)... (louder) Knock knock... etc. Then again, the phrase "Knock knock" is also just as integral. You really can't have a knock knock joke without these two elements.
  21. Nice. Thanks John. I should have started here. It always seems easier to ask something here before searching google!
  22. Any ideas? I'm thinking Mid-Atlantic, NJ, CT, MA... They have a gig at "BAR" in New Haven, though its a new gig. We'll see how it pans out. They also play in NJ at a few places. Also, SummerStage in Central Park this summer. If anyone can think of venues, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
  23. re: Pantone. I will just eye-drop the circles logo in Photoshop. I'm used to doing everything in Quark (prepress). As you guys probably know, Photoshop colors are always off. Strange considering Pantone is a standardized color palette... I was also using the uncoated palette. I think the grey t-shirts look really nice, with the circle logo on the pocket. White too, but the orange and lavendar will really pop off the black! All of them will be cool. Couw, I will PM you to coordinate everything, where to send files, etc. Thanks for the art direction!
  24. Thank you Peter! I like it. I hope everyone else does!
