Hell yeah. We just picked up the Complete B-Sides this weekend. Neither of us had ever heard it, so we got some new songs there... Joey is cool! I agree. This will be the first song I ever buy off the internet. Monumental.

Organissimo (dry) t-shirt contest
.:.impossible replied to Upright Bill's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Here's the revision. The colors don't seem right. 5275CVU and 158CVU, right? I increased the sub-text to 18pt. The main text is at 120pt. The circle logos are at 13%. Should be good. Thanks for re-posting those. -

Let's see what the musicians think about truncating the url, etc. I will increase the point size and adjust the kerning tonight. Another thing I could do is beef up the font a little bit. There are some heavier options in this family. Also, how large do you think it should be? Width? I have the file at 10 inches wide x 3 inches high. It is nice. Another concern I have is that the edges of the circle logo are cropped. Can you recreate that? As for color, do you know the Pantone #'s? Thanks! -

Couw, nice job! I think I like the retro logo better than the crossword puzzle thing, just because it is easier to read and a little more "hip." If you think I should bump up the point size of the sub-text, I don't have a problem with that at all. I can send you the actual file at 72 dpi, if you would like to take a look. My one suggestion though would be to move the "retro" logo down a little bit on the back of the t-shirt. It always looks better at the bottom of the shoulder blade. I'm sure the guy running the press will do it justice. Let's decide on a design, then talk about actual specs and get the shirts on press! Jim, I don't think anyone hear would mind you guys making a little money on this thing! Sign me up for a medium! -

I like the url in the circles logo, but I think anything else will distract from it. It is already such a strong design as is. I think the circle logo would look great on the front pocket area, with the horizontal "retro" design on the back. The horizontal design will definitely be readable. The file is reduced to fit into this thread. You might not even be able to see the mouse icon beside the url in the file that is displayed here. It looks nice, and is quite big. I think Joe G saw one of the original files! The tagline can be changed to read whatever you guys want. One thing that I've learned from designer after designer is KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid. You guys don't want to do to much to the logo, because, to be honest, it stands on its own. -
Hello everyone. My brother has recently joined a long-running salsa band called Bio Ritmo. They are playing SOBs in NYC, among others on a regular basis, and I am trying to help them fill in some of the gaps on their circuit. If any of you know of spots that would be interested in hiring a band such as Bio Ritmo, please post here! Check out there site. You've got some mp3s to check out. www.bioritmo.com BTW, my brother is a bassist. In this band, he plays an AMPEG Baby Bass, which smells terrible!

Where did you see him? I assume this was a solo performance? Did he play much drum kit?

Yeah, sorry about that. Should be more manageable now. Hey, you guys have a hip retro sound! Shouldn't you be rehearsing Ghetto Walk or something? -

What have you learned from being on this forum?
.:.impossible replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Forums Discussion
What have I learned from this... ? I keep glazing over this thread title. I came in once and started to type, as I have with so many other discussions, then decided, what the hell for. I've been visiting the org.org forums since damn near the beginning, and I've learned more than I can shake a stick at, but it still doesn't come close to what I learn when I actually sit down and enjoy the music without trying to think of what I'll type up about it on the internet. I've become more of a "lurker" over time, and this started at the Blue Note board. I like information. I've often questioned what one man's opinion is worth. This bulletin board has sort of confirmed my belief that so much of the talk and language in our world is entirely arbitrary. No offense to anybody, please. I just find it humorous how imporant people think their opinion is. I am more interested in hearing as much quality music as personally possible, than I am in becoming the end-all be-all on Elmo Hope, or Julian Priester in 1975, or some mythical pre-recording blues musician. The scope of music, and the spectrum of knowledge is so broad that I have all but given up on becoming an expert on any one subject. I know I am missing out by not digging as deep as dave9199 does on select musicians, but that is his thing. Dave, this isn't at all about you, hope you don't mind! At the same time, I think its a shame that he doesn't have any Hal Russell NRG Ensemble, or Khan Jamal's Dark Warrior. One of two "Whatever" s. Enough about the difference between me and Dave. I'm trying to soak up as much as I possibly can while I am here on this Earth, and I have no desire, whatsoever, to impress my ideals on anyone else. I've never understood why people wear their hearts on their sleeves and shout out their beliefs in order to separate themselves from those that don't think the same way. I'm here, and you are there. I acknowledge you, but that doesn't mean I am looking for approval or disagreement. Just be there. Do your thing. I'll do mine. We don't have to attack each other when we aren't doing the same thing. Hey, whatever (the second in a series of two). Now you see why I stop typing so many posts! I won't delete this one. Maybe it will elicit response, maybe not. Most likely, this thread will continue to focus on two people's opinion, and side. -
It also comes down to the fact that, no matter how technical, or how emotional, or how simple the music is, it either connects or it doesn't. Sometimes nothing can change that, regardless of how many times you've tried. And sometimes trying is the worst thing you can do. I think this is a very soulful piece of music. Hit me off the bat, unlike another Blue Note recording, Unit Structures, which took its sweet time to reveal itself to me. Conquistador bridged some musics in my mind in ways that I wouldn't have ever considered possible. That's good shit.

That is an interesting observation. I like the comparison. If you would like to compare his playing to that of a vibist, go back in time and check out the Cecil Taylor Quartet Looking Ahead! on Contemporary. 1958.

I'm another big fan of Dear Old Stockholm. I would consider it essential... track after track.

In 1997, a human was defeated by a computer in a game of chess. That computer was said to have been able to consider approximately 200 million moves per second. Seven years later, the battle between man vs. machine continues, as technology exponentially expands. If a computer can analyze 200+ million chess scenarios per second, is it possible that an application with similar operating power could improvise with live musicians? Could a computer actually become a "player" piano. Even if it could, would it be able to simulate the touch and feel of an actual pianist? Just something I began to ponder for no good reason sometime in the last few days. I know there are some chess players here, and I know there are some computer fanatics as well. I think the one thing we all have in common here is jazz, so this discussion is really open to anyone who has the time to consider the possiblity of a computer learning to comp behind and improvise a line with live musicians.

Mal Waldron DVDs
.:.impossible replied to bertrand's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I have the latter. I must say the cover art for the former is much much nicer. This is a good DVD. I am a fan of all of the musicians involved and had not ever "seen" them in action. Blackwell has a strange solo early on, but it is still a pleasure. Recommended. -
Can you read the spines on the jazzloft sleeves? I like to be able to easily find the music I'm looking for.

Polite was exactly the first word that came to mind when trying to classify this music. I decided instead of posting immediately, to hold onto the disc for a while and try listening a couple of times over the past 6 months or so. Funny this thread popped up today. I threw this compilation in just last week. I don't have a play-by-play of the disc, but I can say that I think it would appeal more to my father-in-law than it would to me. Very little risk involved in the music with an almost new-agey feel that I can't quite pin. Some of it I wouldn't even classify as jazz, but a neatened version of it. I guess I was hoping for something with more of an edge. Thanks for the disc, and sorry for the delay in getting back to you! PS I think I'll pass this onto my father-in-law. I think he'll enjoy it and he may be interested in the rest of the Caber catalog. Its the least I can do!

The Photography Thread
.:.impossible replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Another hell yeah. What an amazing capture. This is a recent photograph pointed out to me, which I think is fantastic. Keith Rowe by Yuko Zama 2004 There are quite a few others that are very nice, all from Amplify 2004. -
We are all going to take something different away from this documentary and from this conversation. Value? Might be entertainment to some. Might have a deeper meaning, a narrative on gluttony. Might be one person pointing out how f’d up HE thinks our on-the-move society has become. I had no idea that burgers would eventually affect my liver or my potency! I know they’ll make me fat and clog and harden my arteries, but I don’t really know what that means… Tony, I hear where you are coming from, but I think we still have a different perspective on the general public. Is the Atkins diet a healthy way to live? You’d think so when you count the number of people who have jumped on in the past 3 years! People I KNOW actually think this is a healthy diet!

I don't know what's going on out there right now, but people seem to be talking alot about the Dead lately. Lots of conflicting opinion here and there as well. I love the band with Pigpen. They were so raw and wild. I also love the band post-Pigpen when Mickey Hart left and they really mellowed out in Europe. I don't love Donna, but she was part of the deal I guess. I'm back and forth about the drumming. I liked the band with two drummers, but it is a real treat to hear Billy doing it on his own. He is rooted in American traps drumming, where Mickey knew all along he was more interested in the old rhythms of the world. And he came back with some great stuff! Workingman's Dead is the masterpiece studio recording by a country mile.

Well, I'm not a doctor, but I did audition to play one on TV once. There's something to be said for stating the obvious. I think this guy proved the point pretty well. Wake up people. You are turning yourself into shit. Talk amongst yourselves. Or at least think about what you are putting into your body. Deus, I don't think you've been to Wal-Mart recently. It ain't pretty. And I don't think that everybody thinks about personal nutrition the way a doctor does Tony. That McDonald's press release is a joke. Who is going to stop into McDonald's for a salad and a pedometer? Probably the same person that still craves the Big Mac. They sure as hell aren't picking up new customers. McDonald's now has the rehab and relapse diet on the same Combo board. Imagine if McDonald's became synonymous with health food! PS I think the iced tea has as much sugar as Coke comment was referring to sweet tea. Been to Bojangles' lately?! Whoa! And yummm!

Guess who I sat next to at the Jackie McLean show
.:.impossible replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
We were pretty close to the stage, so I heard Jackie call Grachan a few choice words as he repeatedly ducked off the stage. I don't know what the hell he was doing. And I think all the introductions Jackie kept giving Grachan were just a little patronizing. I don't imagine Grachan will be getting many calls based on this gig...
