Damn. That's my birthday. Too bad I live in Rhode Island. Never heard of Art Ensemble of Rhode Island... Has there ever been an Art Ensemble IN Rhode Island I wonder? Chuck, when was the last time these three got together for performance, other than in recording?

Dave, Chris has decided to close down In Your Ear due to increasing rents on Thayer St. They just had a 40% of EVERYTHING sale. He is going to keep Zingg open for now (in Barrington). Sucks.

Earthshaking Music in Atlanta?

I couldn't keep up with the Funny Rat thread! I assume it was a string of recommendations?

Barry Altschul?! Seems he doesn't play out very often anymore. I don't ever see his name. That will be nice. Hartford is within range from Providence. We saw Matthias Lupri with George Garzone in that series last year, I believe. Is this the glass room with the huge Chihuly installation hanging above? I was supposed to catch Tisziji Muñoz, John Lockwood, and Bob Moses last night in Arlington, MA, but I couldn't find anyone to go. All last night, I kept wondering what the music was sounding like. Damnit. I almost went by myself. With the exception of Lockwood, these guys don't play out very often. I don't think Tisziji has ever played in trio before either.

It's a King Tubby t-shirt from the guys at ropeadope. It would make a sweet album cover though!

Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Alfredson! She's a beautiful girl! I love the name.

I just read that the Milford Graves/John Zorn duets from Zorn's 50th birthday series have been released on TZADIK. I have a recording of the two at FIMAV 1999 and am a big fan of Milford Graves drumming. I thought this might be of interest to some here. Definitely a different drummer, a different saxophonist as well.

Yeah, I can't find anything either. I don't even know what these guys sound like these days, but I have to check it out!

Any early reggae fans in here?

Conn, do you know how the Chinese population ended up on Jamaica? I didn't realize there were so many different cultures there. I have never been before. -
Thank you for posting this! I will definitely be there to hear Hutch with Jackie Mclean and Grachan. Damn. Any more information? Bassists? Drummers?

Ernie B's (Sorry Microsoft Explorer only) This place is sweet. I ordered Augustus Pablo .:. Original Rockers The Congos 2CD King Tubby .:. Dub Gone Crazy King Tubby .:. Dub Like Dirt Prices are good too! Thanks for the recommendations.

My mother-in-law thinks it was a "bad idea" for Fantasia to bring her daughter out, being a nineteen year old out of wedlock. These girls are in a pop contest, they aren't running for office. And why would people be voting for their second and third favorite? Don't you find that strange?

Hey Conn, I have a friend at work whose in-laws are Chinese-Jamaican. I had never heard of this before. He tells me that there was quite a community of Chinese in Jamaica last generation. Most of them have since moved to Toronto Ontario. Were you aware of this community while living in Jamaica? Sorry I don't know where they were, or what Province of China they came from, or why. These are all questions I asked! -
Thanks Brandon. I listened to the Larry Marshall album today and there were a few choice tracks. The disc was actually more interesting than I remembered. The thing is, when I want to hear dub, I want to hear dub heavy. Thanks for the King Tubby recommendations. I am ordering tonight. Everything I've heard, I've heard second hand. Have you seen this?

I agree with you regarding Scientist or anyone else who continued into the 80's. Tubby, on the other hand, never put out a weak record. This is due in large part to his unfortunate murder before shit went digital. Problem is, he's an engineer as opposed to a recording artist (in the strict sense). Everybody knows that the dub era turned engineers into recording artists. What I mean in this case is that Tubby made very few LPs. So 90% of the Tubby stuff out there comes in the form of comps. The only time that this is not the case is when Tubby engineered a session for someone else and, in a brilliant turn of marketting, it all of a sudden became a Tubby record. I'm think here of Augustus Pablo King Tubby's Meets Rockets Uptown and Morwell Unlimited Dub Me. But both of those records rule. so I'm not sure what I'm proving with that. Some reissues involve Tubby in a less than experimental state and some of those are kind of boring but hardly "bad". I'm think especially of Psalms of Drums. Remember, Tubby was an engineer and , as such, not everything he did was a dub mix. Consequently, some records credited to him are relatively straight ahead dates that he happened to run the boards on. As to your point about people attributing their own mixes to Tubby, this is the accusation currently floating around about the Jamaican Recordings label. It's just too weird that they would have access to that many "unreleased" masters. Needless to say, I'm something of a Tubby fanatic. He's one of my top ten fave sound aestheticians of all time. I put him right up there with Brian Wilson, Pete Rock, Mingus, Ives, Hank Shocklee, etc. Crazy? I don't think so. He did some really damned important things for music that people are still catching up with today. Thanks for that Brandon. I will seek out more legit Tubby. I am thinking specifically of stuff like KING TUBBYS MEETS LARRY MARSHALL .:. I ADMIRE YOU IN DUB. Multiple engineers, so maybe Tubby didn't have as much a hand in it as the title would lead me to believe. Multiple bassists, guitarists listed as well, so there is no telling what tracks took place under King Tubby's direct supervision. "KING TUBBYS refers more to the studio in this scenario, I'd imagine, as there are multiple studios mentioned as well. This was released by Motion Records.

Malcom Merriwether won that contest fair and square.

I was almost skeptical when it dawned on me that people were voting for the worst singers. Now it is blatantly obvious. William Hung's appeal has begun a chain reaction.
-
Yeah, it really does. The definition of "free funk" is suddenly visual. Maybe I just caught on.
-
Let's call it the "Hung" factor.
-
The rumors must be true. People are voting to be funny. Sabotage. What the f!

My wife says "Ben Harper The Will To Live." I agree. This one hits a chord with us. Great album. Then she added, "Ornette Coleman Body Meta." Whaaaa?! Of course I'm kidding. Could you imagine?

What is the answer to that question? I might pay $100 for a sealed original lp pressing of Eric Dolpy Out To Lunch! or Larry Young Unity or $100 for both Walt Dickerson/Richard Davis lp's. I also might pay $100 for a fresh lp of Air Air Time. Then again, I don't even buy LPs. Its good to see you around aric. You might want to at least pay ss1 shipping for the infamous stolen disc. Its only fair dude. Anyway, none of my business. When are you going to post some mp3s of your own music?

Yeah, this is a singular album. The critic that wrote that review must be disappointed everytime he hears good music.... nothing to complain about. I've revised the review for you: Buena Vista Club Orlando "Cachaito" Lopez, bassist in Cuba, Cuban son/Latin jazz music. international cast. Cuban dub music, Jamaican organist Bigga Morrison's Hammond Cuban surf guitarist Manuel Galban, French DJ Dee Nasty relaxed, warm, amazing rhythm section of Cachaito, Miguel "Anga" Diaz on congas, Amadiot Valdes on timbales, and Carols Gonzalez on bongos. Ibrahim Ferrer's vocal track; full orchestral string arrangements by Demetrio Muniz and horn arrangements by James Brown saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis; and "Tumbao No. 5 (Para Charlie Mingus)," "Haitian Fight Song." I have not recommended this album to enough people. It was sent to me and I passed it on to others. Everyone in the aforementioned group has LOVED this album. I want more Cachaito.
