  1. Thanks everyone! Lon, we'll see you in Austin!
  2. How about keeping Joe Beck in there and adding Szabo? Get that layering effect that Miles went for a few years later.
  3. Sure Jim! I'll swing through Dallas on my way to Austin. I just assumed you had a gig tonight. My bad!
  4. Shovelhead: I think I'll take that as a compliment. Thanks Al! And congrats on your recent publication in Cadence.
  5. Most of the jazz bebop guitarists I've heard don't bend notes. Tal bends notes moreso than the guitarists this thread focuses on. Kessel relies on bending notes more than Tal, but Tal did bend notes. He played HUGE chords and his lines were restless.
  6. In that case... let's party!
  7. Well, I'll be damned. That must count for something! Tomorrow is actually my birthday. Looks like the party's in Austin though! Thanks fellas. .:.27
  8. For one thing, he tends to bend notes more than the others did. I think his uniqueness, though, isn't his technique, so much as his musicianship. Like the others listed here, he is unique as a musician. This would have shown if he grew up with a saxophone in his hands, I'd think. Another "trick" of Tal's is the harmonic playing he does. Listen to 1969 THE RETURN OF TAL FARLOW for some serious showcasing.
  9. I've realized that all the recordings I have of Bird with Max are kind of crappy in sound quality. What are some better-quality recordings that you would recommend? The Quintet sounds pretty good if I remember correctly, but that was 53. Anything earlier? Thanks!
  10. Elvin Jones & I April 2004
  11. ps I don't think Elvin's style will ever be out-dated. Ask your friend if he thinks the clave is out-dated. I hope that is just taken out of context.
  12. Sometimes I feel like nobody reads my threads around here. I don't know how so many people missed this topic over the last month or so. Anyway, its not about me. I shared a first-hand account on Elvin's state, as previously linked in this thread, from his series at the Rbar. I asked my friend to email me the photo of Elvin and I. I'll post it when I get it. The good news is he is still smiling.
  13. I remember the feeling I had before seeing Elvin the other night. I was nervous about him. I did feel better after seeing him. He was in pain when he wasn't playing, but he seemed happy when he was. I'm not a doctor, but I think he's better off behind the kit than he is in bed at this stage.
  14. I might have to rent these. This was a damn good show.
  15. I saw an ad last night on FOX for a new series "Red & Meth!" Those two are like kids together. Should be pretty funny I think. I agree re: Deck, Ghostface Killa, Raekwon, and I'd add Genius. The VERY first Genius album is really in the old-school style. He hadn't quite refined it into Liquid Swords-style yet. I still say they should have just faded out.
  16. Not so controversial actually. The first round of releases was great though. Each solo album in that first round I consider a Wu Tang album. I think those albums are still relevant. More recent recordings? Much less so.
  17. I read about this the other day. Another break-up that I'm not exactly sure why they felt they had to announce it. Wouldn't these break-ups be a lot cooler if they weren't announced and everyone just suddenly realized they hadn't recorded in years? I think so. Especially in Wu Tang's case.
  18. That is great. I wonder what will be included?
  19. Jon, Any progress on the next Organissimo cover?
  20. I wouldn't say they suck. Donald Byrd isn't in top form, but the band does groove with the added percussion.
  21. That elephant picture reminded me of Wild Boyz last night. Pontias and Steve-O are in India this time, playing polo on elephants. Pontias' elephant decides now's as good a time as any and begins to relieve itself. Pontias, being the Wild Boy that he is, grabs a handful of elephant dung before it drops and throws it at Steve-O. As usual, they just laugh at each other. I am still chuckling.
  22. Dave and I have sort of talked about this. I know GBV, but am not as big a fan as Dave. Everything I know about Pollard leads me to believe that an announcement like this is his sense of humor. Its like hanging up the title GBV, then recording an album with the original members under a new name. But again, I don't know that much about the guy. Dave seems to think this is a pretty serious thing, so I'm probably wrong. I don't know what to make of it.
  23. Thanks for all the recommendations. Some of these I had never heard of. We've been on a Jamaican kick lately. My wife loves this music, so I'm trying to get a little section together for her (and myself... I love it too).
  24. Has anyone gotten there copies yet? I grew up in Richmond VA and Fugazi had a big pull. I'll have to check one or two of these out.
