I came across an illustration of Miles on the net a while back and decided to open up photoshop and try some things. What does this say about me? Hmm... Miles' electric period really inspires me to try adapting to the modern day. Living in the past gets me nowhere. What the hell am I talking about? Hmm... I don't know.

Yeah, American definitely doesn't "stink." I guess its just kind of standard issue cheese to me by now. I'll have to give it a whiff the next time I see a block at the store.

"Freaks & Geeks" series being released on DVD!

That was a great show. I was surprised when it got dropped. I'd watch if the new episodes were being broadcast on cable, but I don't think I'd buy them. -
Is there an RVG version of UNIT STRUCTURES? I didn't realize! I would like to hear it. That is one hell of an album that I continue to connect with on each listen. I haven't heard Conquistador, but have just bumped up to the top of the list. Thanks fellas!

I haven't heard the RVG, but I dig this album. I'm not a huge Horace Silver fan either and I'm not sure why. The second side of this, the tracks with JJ, kills! On a side note, there are a lot of Verdean people that came to RI and Southeastern MA to settle. Every time someone is in my car and I have this CD, they are suddenly interested in jazz, whether they are Portuguese or not! Its funny.

That animation is fantastic!

You got it! I was also curious!

Distinctions between modernism and avant-garde..
.:.impossible replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
"Alternate" works well Larry. "Distorted" may not be the best term, but I was trying to convey that "through the looking glass" idea. The vantage point is as important as the subject. What you write about the permanent avant-garde... I believe this is what Simon is referring to within visual art and painting. When I think of these terms, they seem maligned, since modern can only refer to art created to reflect a range of time, and avant-garde can only refer to what is parallel to, but not modern. It is not modern, but would not exist, or would not make any sense without modernism. Jazz's avant-garde, as we tend to refer to it, may not have advanced much in the past 3-4 decades. In fact, what was modern in the mid-sixties, still applies to today's standard. Bebop is no longer considered modern; however, looking back at jazz as an artform, I believe the current era began circa-1960 and has no end in sight. -
Is this the re-issue you are talking about?

Ubu, we have many cheeses in America too, including one commonly referred to as American Cheese. I know most of us grew up on American Cheese and the Kraft Single. There are two common variations of American Cheese, yellow and white. As far as I can tell, American Cheese is a mild, slightly salty and creamy cheddar. Our Swiss Cheese is a mild sandwich cheese, full of bubbles. Bubbles are the identifier, as the cheese is pretty much flavorless. Mild... very mild. American Cheese is also, for the most part, a sandwich cheese. The Kraft single is a processed version, and Velveeta is a cheese sauce version of this! I think its safe to say the average America loves cheese-product!

Distinctions between modernism and avant-garde..
.:.impossible replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I can relate Rooster, and Hill's ANDREW!!! and Taylor's UNIT STRUCTURES were what I was using for my frame of reference. Probably a little myopic, but I had to start somewhere... its Friday and its happy hour for goodness sake! I can see Sun Ra as a little of both, but more... pre-modern , when referring to Brandon's comments. I think he knew what modern was, and understood where his sound was in relation to it and its avant-garde, and often chose to go back a few years, as if to say, "if we were starting again, let's go back a few years and look at it from this angle." Once again, I've never used so many "clickable smilies" before. -
Distinctions between modernism and avant-garde..
.:.impossible replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I have never heard of most of what Simon and Larry are discussing, but here is how I think of the terms modern and avant-garde when referring to art. Modern refers to that which attempts to reflect the current, be it architecture or a canvas. As an idea, if we were starting now, this is what music, or art would sound or look like. This is what our skyline would look like. Avant-garde refers to that which will never be modern. The avant-garde is just left of modern, a distorted reality that resides in the fray of modern. This is what our skyline would look like from out here. .:. Very difficult to put into words. -

Jazz, its what's for dinner. -
Pick up the first RTF on ECM under Chick Corea's name. I think you'll like it a bit more. I had it in my hand last week. I will go back and pick it up if you really think I will like it. Light as a Feather...
-
I would definitely like to hear more about this album from those that have heard it. Because of the similarities pointed out by our fellow boardmembers, I bought a RTF album, Light as a Feather. I had no idea the album title was to be taken so literally. Just a bit lite for my taste... This track sounded great though, and I'd like to hear more of it!

How about some answers!!!

Sam Rivers! I would think the name Art Blakey would be better known, even in Paris, than Sam Rivers. Pretty cool though. Is Norah still getting bad rap?

Thank you rockafella.

Wow. Great links dude. I don't think I ever read any of those! B3-er, I'm glad you are living in your own house now... After watching The Salton Sea, I have had a serious fear of meth addicts. I picked up a kid about 1.5 hours outside of Wilmington, NC a few summers ago at a rest stop. I normally don't pick up hitch-hikers, but felt extremely atruistic that day. Turns out his girlfriend had died on meth two days before and he left her in a dumpster because he didn't know what else to do. He had quit doing meth a couple of weeks before, but she couldn't stop. An interesting kid, 18 years old, all the way from Portland OR, who had seen more than I ever hope to.

I saw this a few weeks ago and picked it up because of the intriguing look. I didn't end up buying it because I had never heard of ANYONE on the disc, which doesn't really happen very often anymore. I did a search on AMG when I got home and Klemmer came up as a new age musician or something, which made it even more intriguing when recalling how he was described on the album cover... Next time I see this, I just might pick it up. You guys have done a great job selling Valdo Williams around here too.

Has anyone seen this? These were some of my favorite tapes during a period of time when the Dead was all I listened to. I love late 70s, early 80s Dead, among many other periods, hell I love the Dead, period. I don't know why I don't own this yet... has anyone checked it out? What's the word? I haven't listened to them in a while, though I do throw COMPLIMENTS in quite often. I feel another streak coming on! Maybe the GGDD will bring spring 'round here in New England if I listen hard enough.
