  1. I could never figure out what instant grits were good for! The theory is that the grit absorbs moisture as the ants take them down to the queen. As they absorb moisture, and the ants are eating (including the queen), the grit expands to a size that the ant's body cannot handle. They die. Now your soil has dead ants and grits added to it instead of a synthetic and harmful chemical. Stone Ground Grits would not work because they take much longer to expand.
  2. From my perspective, the ipod will always be a portable music device, like the Walkman and that big Case Logic of cassettes once was. The way technology is progressing, I have a feeling that the hard disk will very rarely get use and I will be streaming directly to the device from home, or someone else's server.
  3. I don't know... if fire ants are here for a reason, then whatever they are here for is probably here for a reason as well...
  4. I've had the best success using instant grits. No shit. I know I've been hit by fire ants more times than I can count, but they don't bother me. I can walk barefoot right through poison ivy, dig through the leaves, scratch my face, and nothing. On the other hand, I walk outside and every mosquito/no-see-um in the neighborhood finds my ankles. My wife gets hit by fire ants once every summer. Her foot swells up, pusses, scabs, etc. We spread instant grits all over the mound, the workers take them down the hole, and they disappear. Worth a shot. I couldn't believe it when I was told that was the fix.
  5. Thanks for the article. Its funny, because most of the time I am listening to an album that he is on, I feel like he is usually one of the brightest musicians on the recording... A while back, Tony sent me a copy of that Luminescence release (2 of 100, hand painted) that is half Josh Berman group, half Keefe Jackson Quartet. Recorded at Luminescence Records Loft by Chris Hutchison on January 26, 2007. Same line-up as this Delmark release, which I have not heard yet. It is a live recording and Berman's solos really shine in comparison to most of the stuff that is going on. He always seems like he knows exactly what is happening throughout. Often times, for me, the vibes playing is extremely confused/confusing, which is odd because Roll Down is so fantastic. I'll be interested to hear the Delmark album. I noticed that there is a mp3 for "Almost Late", which is one of the four compositions on the Luminescence release. The three others are "Let's Pretend", "On Account of a Hat", "Hide The Can". Tanaka also plays kit for the Keefe Jackson Quartet, which includes Jeb Bishop and Jason Roebke. I'll be listening to this one again tomorrow. Any word on this? Lucky 7s
  6. Great to see you around Tom! Thanks for the rec. What label?
  7. Is there a web site that focuses solely on KC jazz? This has become a great organizing tool for Richmond, VA. You ought to check out www.rvajazz.com. It is just a blog template, which makes maintenance relatively easy. The calendar is always up to date, interviews, articles, reviews are all rss'd to AAJ.com. It is a one stop location for people in and around Richmond. I know for a fact that musicians try to check the calendar before booking a gig so that they are not competing for the same crowd on any given night!
  8. Well I have two Lacie externals. This one, which has been flawless for over three years and another for over six. I am not using them as backup, but as everyday drives. Ever since changing the position of this one this morning, it has been business as usual. We'll see how long it lasts, but I'm interested in NAS now.
  9. In an attempt to find information on how to revive a non-responsive external HD, I came across a lot of bad advice, and wanted to post this here just in case any of you ever run into a similar problem... I am still running a G5 imac connected to this and a couple of other externals. On Friday, this particular drive would not mount. It sounded like it could not get a good spin going and was undetectable by system profiler. I didn't panic... I was heading out of town for the weekend and figured things would remedy themselves... I'd get back on Sunday and boot up no problem. This morning, I tried just that, and no luck. Which is what brings me here. I found advice elsewhere describing attempt to recover data by sticking the drive in the freezer, banging on it, dropping it, etc. All of these are extreme options, imo, and options that I was not comfortable with just yet. I have always had the drive in the same position, using the foot on the bottom of the drive, sitting in the same place for the past few years. Before disassembling the casing, freezing, smacking, etc. I figured it would be a good idea to move the drive around a bit to see if I could get a good spin. I ended up setting the drive on its face and it is now purring like the day I bought it. Bingo. I am backing up everything to a second drive as I type (on a different machine). While I don't imagine this is the long-term solution, I have at the very least saved valuable files going back to 2005. Before going to extremes, try repositioning the drive. Put your ear up to the casing and listen. You will be able to determine the best position to get the thing spinning properly again. Extract the data you need and back it up! I am now researching the Buffalo Technology LS-CH1.0TL 1TB LinkStation Live Shared Network Storage. Link Any experience?
  10. Oh I plan on having it in my hands on the day of release, and I think SY is the only group whose recordings compel me to do that. AFAIC, they've been on a roll since Murray Street, with each album getting better and better. So yeah, I'm excited about this one! I kind of feel the same way Big A. I like what they've been doing. I had no idea another album was in the works.
  11. That's a cool idea Rock. I have had "fun" results working solo recordings into other things. I have Ableton Live, so it is easy to play around with this type of thing. I haven't done it in a while though, and don't think I have actually saved anything. More like my version of playing a video game I guess. I'm not much of a gamer... this type of thing is way more fun.
  12. The Madlib touch would be to do some hard panning, crossing the takes from left to right here and there, fading in and out in spots, adding a harder rhythm, but not to the foreground, etc. I hear him as a direct descendant of King Tubby.
  13. Here is someone that could really appreciate this. http://www.stonesthrow.com/madlib And dumpy's favorite bass synth is front and center!
  14. I can imagine double quartets/quintets setting up to do things like this. Playing two separate tunes with similar structures and going at it during the choruses.
  15. I'm about to listen to this one as soon as "Someday" ends. I'm liking this. I hope you don't mind, but I sent the link to some friends with no initial explanation. I did some stuff like this on college radio back in the day, but no one was listening and it was carnatic music with Elvin Jones drum solos.
  16. Happy Birthday Jim! I hope you and the girls had a wonderful day! Bring your gear down to Wilmington some day and I will promote the sh!t out of the show!
  17. Definitely did not expect to see this tonight. Whoa. Very sad. I have to admit, my knowledge of Jay ends with I AM TRYING TO BREAK YOUR HEART. Despite the personal static between he and Tweedy at that time, my impression of Jay Bennett from the documentary is entirely positive. He seemed like a very talented musician who needed his own band with the momentum that Wilco had. Bummer. Sounds like he might have been struggling with some things.
  18. Don't know what went down, but I'd love to see many regulars mellow out a bit on the personal differences. I love this place. I'm addicted to it for recommendations and knowledge on a number of 'genres', but it has become increasing difficult to sift through lately. And by lately, I'm not talking weeks. More like months. Possibly even years. I've found myself avoiding that link on my bookmarks bar at times for a stretch. I understand it being difficult for members to separate their personal lives from the bulletin board. It is a modern phenomenon, for sure. I just hope that never and B-3er's comments here are taken to heart.
  19. Hope y'all have a good one Chuck. Happy Birthday!
  20. Who was it Rod?
  21. That is kick ass.
  22. How could LSD be in the air? That's weird.
  23. I still need to hear Ne Plus Ultra! I would also buy the set.
  24. Damn you Jazzmoose! DAMN YOU!!!! "Acting!" I'm not high, but "acting" does not look like an English word right now.
  25. That sucks. I will say that, for the most part, everyone that I have bought from here has made good. Maybe one or two misrepresented items, but overall, I have no negative experiences.
