Is that with Dan, or? Clay is arguably the most difficult surface to learn. I guess time will tell, but I'd say Nadal is one for the history books, as is Henin.
-
Seriously Dan, are you talking shit about Rafael Nadal? Unbelievable. I'm in agreement with the rest of these guys, and the rest of the tennis world, for that matter. He is a GREAT tennis player. He is very young. His rival competitor is arguably the best male tennis player to ever tour professionally. You cannot be serious. Are you?

One time, I took a ride with some co-workers up to Boston to see Elvin play. They were both fans of Alan Dawson's teachings (The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary), but had never heard the Booker Ervin band, so we got high and listened to The Freedom Book. They weren't middle aged women, but they were fairly new to jazz (famous bassist that played with Sting whose name I can't recall right now notwithstanding). They didn't know what to do with themselves. It was fantastic. So... try getting high with them and playing The Freedom Book.

In theory the more money you spend, the less impact the device playing the record will have on hearing the music on the record: less rumble from motors, less ambient vibrations affecting the sound, a better cartridge to translate those grooves more accurately into music. Music for the money I would go vintage. There were some incredible turntables made in the 70's that were designed to last a lifetime plus. I am very lucky in that my local dealer will let me test drive everything, so I have a chance to make sure it works and that the price is reasonable. Currently I am deeply in love with my new 1970's Thorens TD-125 MkII. For about $300 bucks with a nice Shure V15 cartridge it is hard to imagine any thing new for this price ever coming close in qualilty. I know two guys that make part of their living picking up used tables and amps through the want ads and garage sales and turning them for a profit. So there is lots of good used stuff out there. Bill I agree, unless you have a very high end system a vintage turntable like the Thorens is a great option, the model to consider are the TD124, TD125,TD160 or even better TD160 Super, just make sure they are in good working condition. Then it would be nice to find one of the above turntable fitted with a SME3 arm, and the Shure V15 Mk cartridge is hard to beat and being a moving magnet would not require any head amp. These particular Thorens turntables are very well made and should last a life time. Another option is a Linn Sondek lp 12 but they are more tricky to get to work well. Ok, and how difficult is it to find *that* combination in good working condition for a fair price?

Can someone tell me the fundamental differences (other than price) between the turntables @ ~$300: Pro ject Debut, Music Hall MMF2.1, Rega P1 and the turntables that become increasingly expensive? What exactly does your money get you? Seems to me, if I buy a turntable, I am going to have to spend just as much money on the preamp/amp. So, all in all, just to get my feet wet, before I even begin to hunt down an original pressing of Air Time (which will be one of my first records... and yes, I understand that I am going to have a very small collection for a very long time!), I am easily $600 out. I am serious about this, though I know I can't afford it right now. Even if I could, the money ought to go toward getting my bars tuned/polished/etc. p.s. Bol, what did you end up buying?

Was he like 20? This girl travels with her own mustard bottle? Wow. Stop typing NOW.

I am impressed (is that the right word?) with all of the thought and analysis and effort that is going into this decision. It must have taken SOME TIME to type all of that into the text box, then colorize it. My advice is to not bring any music at all. Or just go in four ways on the Atlantic Records box set.

If you can read the small type at the bottom of the bill, tell me who these people are. My hunch, they are undiscovered clients, or potential clients, of Superfly. Superfly does a lot more than throw this festival. They have established a pretty amazing vertical market, especially considering they will soon own the land. Organissimo should certainly be given the time of day. I think it would be a very safe booking move to put them on a roster like this, especially now that there are so many mainstream jazz acts on board. How about this: a duel between MAGO (Medeski+Martin) and Jimmy and Randy? You don't think that would draw a crowd? You don't think the people would eat that shit up? It just doesn't take much... Organissimo is a damned good band. They deserve the time of day, or at least a spot out in some remote parking lot.

Hey, there's some obscure/unknown stuff popping up at side tents... I don't see why organissimo wouldn't be a great addition to a festival like this. You could always pack up the van and show up with a generator!

Joe Milazzo gave me a copy of this album after a trip down to Dallas years ago. I will listen to it today... I see a buy it now copy on ebay for $12.95 + shipping. -
But everything is out of synch on youtube. I see where you are coming from though. Still, one hell of an undertaking to sequence these paintings. I don't know what goes into morphing, or most visual FX, but I can imagine it is more work than it is usually worth.
-
Yes, but wouldn't you agree that "old" isn't necessarily bad? I think it is used to great effect here. If you are going to morph something, morph hundreds of years of portraits within minutes. It seems that all of this work for a youtube post is, well, a lot of work...

Great Screensavers Of Our Time
.:.impossible replied to Jim R's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
what is the name of that program? sounds like it would take a lot of ram and processor, depending on the resolution of the images. i'd love to do something like that, but the files i work with are HUGE. my screen goes black when it isn't in use. -
My mom sent this to me a few days ago. Pretty incredible. I forgot to post it here for y'all. Thanks Lon!

I have been told that Superfly Productions bought the land that has been hosting Bonnaroo.

What a goofy thing to say... Hey, Randy... check out his pet peeve, then call the number he gives at the bottom of the interview. Interview with Rick Farman, co-founder of Superfly Productions

What give a player his unique "sound"?
.:.impossible replied to K1969's topic in Miscellaneous Music
he probably just needs to work on those calluses. -
Total Eclipse has Chick on the bench... Medina/Spiral has Stanley Cowell. I like all three of these albums, but I pull Medina/Spiral more often than Total Eclipse. Apparently, this is an underrated BN!
-
a) this is not seventies hutcherson, b) medina/spiral is a bad-ass two-fer, no matter which way you cut it... Even if you didn't need this product to complete your conn collection, you, in my opinion, still need this product. Hutcherson and Chambers are at each other's throats!!!

Modern Rock - what do you like???

One album that I did 'get' at the same time I bought Boxer is the new Dr. Dog album, along with Ariel Pink's House Arrest. Both of them have been playing quite a bit the past couple of months. Good summer music. Obviously, the Dr. Dog is slightly easier on the ears, but...
