  1. They canceled my Dvorak order...
  2. This isn't "users" experiencing Larry's "systems", this is a small-scale collective venture with a few volunteers in key positions doing essential work, and just one person acting as, in effect, treasurer. The rudeness and moderator-baiting works against all of us and not just against some imaginary power. No moderators = no board.
  3. Damn straight he did. And Nessa claims all the credit. The people have a right to know! And that's saying nothing of Rodney King and that bus seat.
  4. Title track from Foxes Fox. Had this since it came out. Suddenly warmed to it. http://www.emanemdisc.com/E4035.html
  5. Times points out where Lance's titles would go if he was stripped of them (which I don't believe will happen but what do I know)
  6. There's no right or wrong in the world of opinions. Wrong!
  7. Yay! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-18454800
  8. I vote for the cat.
  9. Sigh. I wish I was an ageing alcoholic. Then I too would know how this world goes.
  10. I'm pretty sure the 22nd Century will be better - so hang on in there...
  11. You won, and now we're investigating YOU...
  12. I agree; to my ears most Toshiba releases since 2000 that I've heard sounded increasingly horrible, LOUD and harsh. Sadly true, but they are at least clear at lower volumes. Not many of these titles are new to CD...
  13. The letter to Armstrong was leaked and has been published here: http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/armstrongcharging0613.pdf
  14. Thanks for the heads up! The Jarrett issue is a general release and is discussed in the ECM thread. I *think* this link will work... http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/search/list?category=1%2C2%2C3%2C4%2C5%2C7%2C9%2C10%2C23%2C24%2C6&target=ALLCATNUM&advanced=1&catnum=tocj&formattype=1&direction=1&sort=date
  15. To me, there should be a statute of limitations on doping investigation.
  16. This one is appearing soon - I like Nude Ants when I'm in the right mood, and I'm looking forward to hearing this. I guess the title will invite cruel and harsh humor from anti-Jarretteers... Disc: 1 1. Personal Mountains 2. Innocence 3. So Tender Disc: 2 1. Oasis 2. Chant Of The Soil 3. Prism 4. New Dance
  17. For Ligeti you might want to go for the cheapo box on Teldec (http://www.amazon.it/The-Ligeti-Project-Various-Composers/dp/B0016A8E1K?SubscriptionId=AKIAIVGTH525N57WM2NQ&tag=pricenoia-21&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B0016A8E1K ) You most definitely do BUT you still need the second quartet either in the Artemis (EMI) or the Arditti (Sony) version. WHOAH! Thanks! Seems the number of classical bargains these days is really endless! You know, one of the reasons why I never yet more than dabbled with classical music is that in Switzerland, many single classical CDs cost easily 30€ - single discs, okay? Of course you can hang out in stores and then order online, but stil ... As for the string quartets ... what's wrong with the LaSalle version on the DG disc here: http://www.amazon.de/Kammerkonzert-Ramifications-Aventures-Streichquartett-aeterna/dp/B00000E3YZ/ ? Just asking - as the Artemis versions are of course easy to find, too ... (Arditti seems to be more difficult though). STOP PRESS I forgot that there is a Henze title in this series... I am an enthusiast of the choral 9th symphony but I assume the text is not supplied and I have a feeling that without it is hard to get the whole point of it.... all the stuff on that disc is worthwhile.
  18. You could get the Lasalle as well! (I never heard it..)
  20. I don't have the complete list but if you go to Europadisc and do Advanced Search, then enter "EMI 20th" under 'label', I think that will show you them all.
  21. Maybe I put it poorly/confusingly, but here are forum rules 7&9: 7) We do not allow sharing, trading, or linking copyrighted material that is being offered illegally, including bootlegs. 9) When posting articles from other websites, do not quote the entire article. Please post a small snippet, then include a hyperlink to the full article. See this post as an example. Sharing lyrics of copyrighted songs would, I think, not fall into the "being offered illegally" class because there is no medium for the sale of lyrics alone, though posting pdf files of sheet music plus lyrics of copyrighted songs would violate rule 7 because there is a legal medium for the sale of sheet music, plus of course an illegal one. Jim will correct me if I'm wrong about what I've just said, but if he doesn't, please don't argue with me about this on some "gotcha, you hypocrite" basis -- I have no time for that; besides it's Jim site and his rules. I just enforce them as best I can. You got me. Sorry shouldn't have teased you...
  22. Larry, this is true, and that would include song lyrics, wouldn't it?
  23. Any particular favorites and recommendations there? I've laid eyes on the Honegger and the Satie but haven't jumped for them (nor for any others from the series). If you haven't yet done Dutilleux, that's worthwhile (though ignore the opening piece, Le Loup). There's a few of those quite promising if you don't already know the repertoire. The Hindemith with Mathis etc. is a very good compilation. I don't know the Abbado Kammermusiken but can't be bad. I never too much interest in Hartmann but there's a chance to revisit him. Stockhausen! And Suk cond. Pesek. Dutilleux for sure. BTW the list at DD's link is not complete. There are over 60.
  24. Here's a Boulez recommendation http://www.amazon.com/D%C3%A9rive-1988-rev-2002-2006/dp/B006HAP9BW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1339322067&sr=8-2&keywords=boulez+derive - just the one looong piece for a dollar, dip your toe in the water... And John Handy Live at Monterey for under $2 if you buy the tracks, not the LP http://www.amazon.com/Live-At-Monterey/dp/B001HE0JO0/ref=sr_shvl_album_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1339322316&sr=301-1 Duh, you had that one.
  25. The small number of people who still quite like old jazz records seem (like Marc Myers) to be in constant moral panic about the fact that most people aren't into jazz. The idea of 'teaching our young people to listen to jazz' is honestly bizarre, a model of enforced 'appreciation' which you already would find almost nowhere (teach people to make music, not consume it, I'd say). I know I am repeating myself, but I think that there's a small group of folks who overvalue something they think of as a bounded entity called 'jazz', based on a dated paradigm that reads off 'jazz' retrospectively through a canon of 'great soloists' abstracted from shifting social and commercial contexts, and above all socio-musical practices, then is baffled that nobody else seems to go along with their model. Not quite no-one though - for whatever reason, jazz has been institutionalized. So we have institution (which includes practioners) on the one hand and fans-of-old-records on the other, but a gap where the desired audience of people supposed to lap it all up, guided by administrators and (musical) technocrats (uh, musicians, I mean) on the one hand and super-expert record collectors, discographies in hand, is supposed to be. Enter Marc Myers and his theory of music education to save the day!
