  1. Yeah it's messed up, to put it no more strongly. Had all these under my hand at Ray's Jazz in Foyles's bookstore London today... and I walked away because of all these doubts. FFS.
  2. Coming back to my infatuation with the mono box, which IMO is the high water mark of historical remastering to date (at least within my experience) I just want to say thanks to all contributors in this thread for helping give this set a meaning and a context. It's not jazz, I know, but it is a real strength of this board that informed enthusiasts give each other a steer and something to think about working through the *mountains* of material we all have decdied to get through (and I am an academic and know very well what it means to plow through the archive of historical materials). I love these remasters and I have been honestly delighted to have been working through them alongside the members of this forum (as indeed I always am on all of these shared listening ventures). Cheers!
  3. Well the late 80s and early 90s digital titles I have heard didn't stand up too well at the time and even less so now, I should think.
  4. That is not the official website. It contains links to 'illegal' downloads. I guess if we want to hear these before we die we should just grab what this guy has put up? Here's the offical site: http://www.hororecords.com/homepage.htm. Like I said, I wrote to the address (in Italian) and got no reply.
  5. Well, you could ask Steve Lake over on AAJ. Some of these have been on CD in Japan. We had the recent Manfred Schoof but I guess you're right that this would be a bridge too far. Always worth asking though...
  6. As a general rule, I have it on good authority that ECM likes the sound of its masterings, and that it does NOT do remastering. That's what I thought. IIRC they did remaster those "Rarum" compilations from a few years ago. Might be a way for David to sample an artist's ECM tracks in remastered form. Well it's a start! Thanks.
  7. I do a certain amount of endurance sport. It leaves you open to this kind of thing. It's frustrating but par for the course and we bring it on ourselves, not least when we don't hold off training when we should know better. Probably you have been doing better than me (we're the same age) on infections etc. so maybe this is just a catch up!
  8. As a general rule, I have it on good authority that ECM likes the sound of its masterings, and that it does NOT do remastering. That's what I thought. And that's what I thought too. But I don't agree with them and that is why I wish I knew the dates of the digital transfers of analogue material. Obviously with DDD material the recording date tells the story.
  9. I get confused as to which ECMs have already been issued on CD and which are new reissues. To the extent that I want them at all it quite matters to me since older digital issues and reissues from ECM have been of poor sonic quality, in my opinion, and I don't want them. I might in some few cases be lured by more recent remasterings but there seems no way to know what you are getting.
  10. FWIW I never got a reply to my mail to what purports to be the Horo website.
  11. A landmark, nothing can ever be as good. Edited to add: I am not one to gush. Edited to add: if you give a scopata volante about recorded music, you want this. Edited to add: messed up. Forwards, backwards and sideways. Just messed up.
  12. My copy of the Last Waltz made it from Newbury Comics. I notice that zweitausendeins has copies for 26.99 euros, still a good price.
  13. I can get on with the 6000s if only because I want the titles! You're right that they are loud, maybe no more than the typical (J)RVG and certainly not as uneven from title to title as those turned out to be. The JRVG of Soundin' Off is one of the later and better ones, I feel, but again I am probably influenced by the fact it is the only source I have for that music.
  14. In fact the most recent version of this title (TOCJ 8585) seems to be not so expensive, and recently released so easy to find. I've only heard the JRVG so I can't vouch for it or indeed for any of these TOCJ 8000 series. Has anyone bought any of these? Edited to add link to full list of available TOCJ in release order on hmv.co.jp. Others may find this interesting.
  15. Not accidental. That record is wasted. Hi Clifford, Just searching the net last night and I noticed you made reference to some guitar music that goes into areas further than those deployed by the late Derek Bailey or myself (Ian Brighton). I am absolutely staggered that anyone has ever heard of my music as the last record I made was in 1988. I did most of my playing and recording between 1973 and 1977 with only a few major concerts afterward and a single CD called 'Eleven years from yesterday' in 1988 with Phil Wachsmann,Marcio Mattos, Trevor Taylor and the late Pete Jacobsen. Can you please tell me where you heard any of my music - best regards Ian Brighton Clifford, did you ever respond to Ian?
  16. Now available on Spotify.
  17. Good post. I suppose if regrets over all we put back in the rack are all we have that's not so bad. That said, we all have these images in our memories...
  18. Peter Stubley's European Free Improvisation pages are found here. If you don't already know this site you might find it useful.
  19. Is there any method in the streaming madness? Spotify has the Abercrombie but not the Surman. I think they somehow missed the batch that Rooster was in. I hadn't listened to any Abercrombie for a while (uhhh, Night, when it was first issued on LP...). He hasn't changed!
  20. Ah, the days of the Zweitausendeins box set sale! I still haven't finished working my way through all those sets... Ha ! Your not the only one - I only got a couple of CDs into the Evans 'Fantasy' set and really must get to grips with that one. Sure do miss those great Zweitausendeins deals (hit its peak with the Universal Mosaics at about 35 Euros each - Eldridge, Tal, Mulligan Concert Band, Jazztet). We'll never see anything like that one again. Yeah agreed. I'm still struggling to get through all those bargain euro-mosaics too...
  21. Hey! Belated birthday greetings from me!
  22. Ah, the days of the Zweitausendeins box set sale! I still haven't finished working my way through all those sets...
  23. Hmmm. There is a basic horo website (here) but there is no discussion of any reissues. There is a contact though and I'll drop them a line.
  24. Yeah there are so many I had to make a list to count them: Riverside Verve Fantasy Secret Sessions Turn Out The Stars Last Waltz Consecration The Complete VV doesn't even register on this scale. Did I miss one? I've got Last Waltz on it's way from Newbury - on top of my Riverside that really will be enough to keep me going... uh, I think...
