  1. I guess their back-catalog would yield a few such sets - George Adams, Don Pullen, David Murray, Max Roach, Andrew Hill etc etc. Maybe if there is a feeding frenzy on these sets more will come. By the way does anyone know where there is a complete discography of these labels/ Many titles are in print and listed on their website, though you can't browse it by artist name which is a drawback. What these labels did was document, in some cases extensively, many American (and other) artists who were and mainly are ignored by American labels, or who spread their activites between independents (of which BS/SN must be the largest) and were made very welcome in Europe. These boxes are a welcome reminder that these Italian labels are actually classic labels - during decades which may be less than truly classic, but at least we have the evidence. So hats off to Giovanni Bonandrini and his catalogue of 500+ titles - let's hope for a few more box sets.
  2. I certainly won't knock this. It is good, if genteel. That depends on your feeling about late Chet. If you actually like that record I think you'll enjoy the rest of the set more, maybe even much more. In general, I like the good late Chet the best of his work (and this is one of them). In fact I'm playing that right now. It sounds wonderful - because it's an LP! CD can never sound like this. There's someone playing a type of bass banjo on it. Apparently this was common in the LP era but the practice was discontinued in the digital age and the bass banjo was removed from all digital remasters as people with small portable AM radios in the mid-1970s felt they had been missing out on something - they weren't sure what. I guess I don't *love* this record musically but, as I only rarely make time for vinyl these days, I'll say it *sounds* a real treat...
  3. Has anyone heard the Celibidache Brahms cycle with an Italian Orchestra? Quite unacceptable from many points of view - but incredibly engaging...

  5. On the Haden, I'd not put this up against the ECM Old and New Dreams, and I see that band as a more polite version of the Ornette Coleman quartet. The non-O&ND is Ok-ish. On the Threadgill, I do like Air but don't know how much you need and find these a little undercharged, while the Nuff-Nuff group is OK and the other stuff I find dry. The other sets I dunno. My 0.02 but much of the BS/SN material has gone cold on me after a period of eager accumulation. Not so great sonically unless they have gone in for remastering (um, and there's the usual Catch 22 right there...).
  6. I'm loving this thread.
  7. Oh I'm deft. Never let it be said that I'm not deft.
  8. Wrong: MILT JACKSON QUINTET feat. RAY BROWN / JUST THE WAY IT HAD TO BE (IMPULSE / WEA WMC5-129) Japanese Exclusive Release CD Out of Print. Released on 1990.08.25 Recorded Live at the Shelly's Manne-Hole, Hollywood, Aug. 1, 2, 1969 http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/milt-jackson-way-japan-cd-72866602
  9. Good call. The LP is quite findable, but there has never been a CD. Never say never!
  10. Those TOCJ-6xxx masterings have a lot more compression and reduced dynamics compared to older Japanese and American non-RVG Blue Note CD reissues. Not my cup of tea. I agree. It is a matter of taste though. I wouldn't say to anyone not to buy these if it is an easy route to a title which is otherwise hard to find. And they are more consistent than the (J)RVG series which sometimes sound like an old cassette. That 'consistency' comes at the price of reduced fidelity to the music as recorded and to the Blue Note LP sound, though as some point out the RVG LP mixes were pretty much red dial efforts and not really a shot at acoustic realism. I think at 1100 Yen these are a good way to fill out gaps and - maybe - fun! I was referring to the TOCJ-6xxx series, compared to older Japanese and American non-RVG Blue Note CD reissues. I was not talking about the upcoming TOCJ-8xxx CD reissues or any RVG series. I know, and I agreed. Then I reverted to my discussion of (J)RVGs.
  11. Cannot check now, but I'm fairly sure Out of the Cool as IMP 11862 was 20-bit, no? Into the Hot definitely wasn't (MCD 39014). Also, about Ray Charles, if I'm not mistaken he kept ownership of the ABC-Paramount masters and that's why reissues of his ABC stuff come out elsewhere (Rhino) and not GRP or Universal? (Sorry to digress, but just read here that Concord is reissuing Genius + Soul = Jazz "in cooperation with the Ray Charles Foundation") F Half of Into The Hot is on 'Mixed'. By the way this is a list of those titles not available - and as you'll gather form the conversation we didn't manage to be too consistent...

  13. If these TOCJ 8*** are indeed the same masterings as the TOCJ 6*** then yes they are bright, but also very clear and a deal less murky than some of the JRVGs and RVGs.
  14. Am I alone in being past caring about CDs? There is such a glut of reissues and new releases. I know we are heavily into the question of ownership on this board, and on the right of copyright holders to realise value in the works they have commissioned or leased. We should remember that the glut of recent issues is caused by artists being eager to make releases without getting paid properly. So really artists are competing with each other to record for little or nothing. That is because it is only major artists who realise any reveneue from CD sales, for the rest a CD is a calling card, and a way of going 'on record' and putting it out there (a vanity project, in other words). So for people who are interested in minor music, as we here mainly are, and setting aside the question of collecting (which is pretty dominant on this board and is a different matter, though some seem believe they are supporting the mainly now dead artists rather than just feeding an obsession) then does the contraction of the recorded music market matter to *us*? Not to me - there's much more of what I want than I have money or time for.
  15. Let's hope that EMI put up some of the other material which they leased to Mosaic - after all they 'are' half of Mosaic and the lines of communication are strong. Maybe some of the material leased from other companies will also make an appearance in due course.
  16. Let us know if anyone gets a response. I've sent a few emails to this place regarding Impetus titles, with no response. I'd love to hear that the vinyl might still be available. Since they are a wholesaler one approach might be to ask a UK retailer who may be dealng with them - such as Mark Wastell of Sound323 - http://www.sound323.com/ - I say "might"...
  17. Try here - they still list it. http://www.impetusdistribution.co.uk/
  18. Ah, but *you* knew where to look...
  19. Well I looked through some threads but I didn't find it... so yes... In fairness to myself, the one time this came up which I remember it was never answered:
  20. Thanks - I'll try it - though the version I am on now doesn't even have that switch! Edited to add: updated it, tried it, fixed it. Now to fix my other machines...
  21. Well I also like Google Chrome and Firefox but IE is still my main browser for whatever reason. Increasingly though I am finding that pages which work in Firefox don't work in IE (or the other way round - a page which fails in IE is fine when I try it in Firefox). Maye some developers are so anti-microsoft they just don't bother with IE? In any case, yeah I can try fiddling with the compatibility settings... if I can find them...
  22. Here's what I am seeing right now and it is like this on all my machines.
  23. One reason that Atlantic CD sound is, uh, not what it could be, is that they were taken from the LP masters, not from the original master tapes which were destroyed in a fire. I beleive that's why the digipac issues are touted as 'original sound' but make no claims to being from the original masters.
  24. I've long known the work of all the major jazz artists. In fact we talk more here about minor artists and releases, maybe because we already just know it regarding the majors (uh, or maybe because we overrate some minor artists!). I guess the one credit goes to former GHF (thanks, Dan!) whose constant advocacy persuaded me, once I had worked through every other regular Blue Note artist (so, yeah, maybe it was the Blue Note letch more than anything, but even so...) to overcome my suspicion of Gene Harris and take the plunge. So I'm the proud owner of a clutch of Three Sounds mini-LPs and I must confess that I do like them. Bearing in mind I'm usually more at the Brotzmann end of things that's not a bad result.
  25. Depends on your tolerance for Nordic Twilight. Also a bit of Giddy Pixie music in there. And this lady, who I confess I had never heard of: http://judithberkson.com/
